3 Principle
3.1 OMCI management
OMCI Principle
OMCI (ONT Management and Control Interface)
In the standard of ITU-T G.984.4 , OMCI is the protocol which is used for managing and
controlling ONT . which defines the Frame Structure and the interactive mechanism between OLT
and ONUs . Meanwhile , it defines a series of management entity for the service description by
disintegrating ONT services model
OMCI protocol defines the message format interacted between OLT and ONU , the confirmation
and retransmission mechanism on a logical communication channel . When the OLT adopts OMCI
protocol , it can manage and configure various ONTs . Also , it support off-line configuration and
the on-line configuration recovery . it is convenient to deliver the services and maintain the
terminals without any pre-configuration stored in the ONT
Establishing OMCI channel
The process of establishing OMCI channel is automatically finished without manual configuration
as shown in the following steps
Step 1 The ONT finishes the registration process by interacting PLOAM message with OLT after
powering on the ONT
Step 2 The OLT studies OMCI capacity of the ONT through PLOAM message . When the ONT
supports OMCI protocol , OMCI channel will be established between ONT and OLT .
Step3
when OMCI channel has been established between ONTs and OLT , the OLT will send
down the configuration and management parameters to the ONTs , at the same time ,
the ONTs will send up the status and warning message to the OLT .

3.2 TR069 management

TR069 ,with its fullname CPE WAN Management Protocol(usually called CWMP management
protocol),includes main features as following

Copyright ReservedSHENZHEN FH-NET OPTOELECTRONICS Co.,Ltd.Internal Public

FHR ONT []

Automatic services configuration and dynamic services supply

Management of CPE software
Monitoring of CPE status and performance
diagnosis

Figure3-1

the interacting process of CWMP management protocol

TR069 management model defines the communication behavior between the managed user
terminals and ACS . it mainly contains the discovery stage and the link-established stage.
On the ACS discovery stage , user devices need to get ACSs URL , which may be previous
configrated in Users device or deliveried to Users device through DHCP protocol . Once Users
device gets ACSs URL , it can establish connection with ACS anytime .
In the connection process , as a client of HTTP , users deivce sends SOAP request to ACS by
HTTPPOST function , at the same time , ACS sends SOAP response to user equipment by HTTP
Response function . In every HTTP request , it may contain several SOAP requests or responses .
To ensure the security of management and configuration system , TR-069 suggests authenticating
users devices by SSL/TLS . you should authenticate users devices by the method defined in
http1.1 even though SSL/TLS is not been selected

3.3 Network Management

NMS , short for Network Management System, is an distributed management system with
software and hardware combination which hardware part is always a distributed server . The
software part contains Client and Server installed in Server Machine to support synchronization
and backup among Server Machines as well as Dual-system Switching of network management .
The client of network management is installed in PC terminal of maintenance staff . the main
functions of network management of Access Network contain service configuration and
delivering , monitoring of performance warning , operation and management of equipment ,

FHR ONT []

troubleshooting and maintenance .

SNMP protocol particularly defines the interacting behavior among NM server and the devices .
NM server acquires the required information by SNMP GET , GET_NEXT , GETBULK instructions .
Eg. Using SNMP GET instruction to copy the configuration in the devices . SNMP Agent is running
in the device so that the device can handle and respond the SNMP message . meanwhile , the
device can automatically upload warning , incident , configuration change messages to Network
Management Server by TRAP function
By now , SNMP protocol includes three versions , SNMP v1 , v2 , v3 .

3.4 Management on The Web Page

Web page management is the family access terminals management based on Network Browser ,
which functions often contain configuration , query , upgrade and debugging . Just due to its
simple operation , it is widely used in the services delivering and maintenance .
Web page management function depends on web service Configuration Procedure of the
terminal to receive HTTP messages from users , the port number is 8080 . You can comprehend
the principle after researching HTTP protocol .

6.2 Troubleshooting Instruments

6.2.1 Digital Multimeter
Digital Multimeter is a common instrument applied to measurement in the electrotechnical and
electronic industry with its simple and practical features
The basic measurement of Digital Multimeter include resistance measurement , DC voltage
measurement , AC voltage measurement , current measurement , capacitance measurement ,
Diodes and transistor measurement .
The method of application as follows

6.2.2 Optical Power Meter

Optical Power Meter is a essential measurement device for the measurement at optical
communication system . which is often applied to measuring the optical power composited by
several wavelengths at the various measuring points in the optical fiber link . the optical power
shows the optical energy at the measuring point of the optical link , it is an important indicator in
the optical network . when it is below a certain value , the optical receiver can not detect the
signal which means the signal from the sender can not be received . In conclusion , it is very
important to know the method of application well
The following introduction of PPM-350B is about the method of application of this optical power
meter , the methods of other optical power meters dedicated to PON are similar .
PPM-350B is a measuring instrument of optical power for several wavelengths of GPON(1310nm ,
1490nm , 1550nm) as shown in Figure 6-1
Figure 6-1

The appearance of the PPM-350B optical power meter

From Figure 6-1 , you can realize the difference between PPM-350B and the common
optical power meter that PPM-350B contains optical interfaces both at the downstream
direction and the upstream direction, also can display the optical power value of
1310nm , 1490nm , 1550nm
The common measuring points show as the following Figure 6-2
Figure 6-2

the measuring points at a GPON network

Product Manual [] chapter_5 Troubleshooting

The maintenance staff should know the optical parameters at the ONT side , for example , the
maximum output optical power at 1310nm wavelength , the minimum input optical power at
1490nm wavelength , the optical receiver sensitivity of 1490nm or 1550nm wavelength ,etc . The
parameters show in Table 6-2

The power loss of optical channel equals to La n1b n2c n3d e f dB

The explanation as follow:
a indicates the average optical power loss per kilometer of optical fiber , L indicates the total
length of optical fiber with the unit km . In the project , the optic fiber patch cords is so short
that the power loss from it can be ignored
b indicates the power loss at the welding points(dB) , n1 indicates the amount of the
welding points
c indicate the power loss at the mechanical splices , n2 indicates the amount of the
mechanical splices
d indicate the power loss of the joints(dB) , n3 indicates the amount of the joints
e indicates the power loss of the splitters(dB), we assume there is only one splitter here , if
there is another splitter as the second layer ,we also need to calculate its power loss
f indicates the redundance of the project we often value it 3dB
