HAND PROTECTION POLICY

Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to reduce the number of hand and finger injuries by ensuring that all
personnel are provided with proper protection. Hand protection is essential to prevent injuries from
hazards such as abrasions, cuts, lacerations and chemical exposure. Hazard Assessments conducted by ISS
and reoccurring incidents reveal that personnel are exposed to hand hazards and potential injuries that
cannot be eliminated through engineering and work practice controls. The Company must ensure that
employees are provided and wear appropriate hand protection. As of January 1, 2014, ALL ISS Field and
Shop personnel will be required to wear Impact Protective Gloves (see Figure 1). The use of cotton/orange
dot gloves (see Figure 2) will no longer be allowed.

Figure 2

NOTE: If a greater hazard exists and an employee can demonstrate that wearing the impact protective gloves
would create a greater hazard to the employee, then an alternative form of hand protection may be provided
for the application (i.e., In the field, Operators performing hydraulic jack/snubbing operations.) Gloves should
not be used around rotating machinery where the glove, if caught, would cause an injury.
Intended Use for Impact Protective Gloves
No single glove will protect against all exposures. Gloves are subject to physical wear and tear, and will
degrade over time. While impact protective gloves offer good protection from abrasions and impacts to the
hand, they will not provide protection from chemical absorption through the skin, or electrical shock.
Therefore, it is important to select the proper glove for the job (i.e., nitrile gloves see figure 3 for chemical
exposures refer to chemical MSDS for recommended PPE).

Care of Protective Gloves

Protective gloves should be inspected before each use to ensure that they are not torn, punctured or made
ineffective in any way. A visual inspection will help detect cuts or tears. Gloves that are discolored or stiff
may indicate deficiencies caused by excessive use or degradation from chemical exposure. Personnel shall
ensure that gloves are stored in an area free of dust and chemical contaminants. Any gloves with impaired
protective ability should be discarded and replaced. The manufacturer of the glove recommends that the
gloves be hand washed with a mild detergent and air dried as needed. The manufacturer also recommends
not to machine wash and dry the gloves as doing so could cause damage to the gloves.
The manufacturers guidelines for use and care shall be followed.
Supervisor Responsibilities
Supervisors on job locations will be responsible for ensuring adequate inventories of impact protective
gloves are available on location. They shall also monitor the use and maintenance of the gloves. Impact
protective gloves will be provided to ISS personnel ONLY. Gloves shall not be distributed to other
contractors on location.
Employee Responsibilities
Company personnel are responsible for the following:
1. Utilizing the impact protective gloves in accordance with this policy.
2. Ensure that they have the appropriate hand protection for the task being performed.
3. Maintaining provided impact protection gloves in a safe condition and/or to replace gloves when
necessary.
