SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
2.1
2.2
2.3
Fall Arrest: The structure selected for personal fall arrest applications
must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in the directions
permitted by the personal fall arrest system of at least: 3,600 lbs. with
certification of a qualified person; or 5,000 lbs. without certification. See
ANSI Z359.1 for certification definition. When more than one personal
fall arrest system is attached to a structure, the strengths stated above
must be met at each location independently.
From OSHA 1926.500 and 1910.66: Anchorages used for attachment
of personal fall arrest systems shall be independent of any anchorage
being used to support or suspend platforms, and capable of supporting
at least 5,000 lbs. per user attached, or be designed, installed, and
used as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintains
a safety factor of at least two, and is under the supervision of a
qualified person.

E.
WARNING: Davit arms and mounting bases that are installed for personnel
riding, material handling, or rescue applications only, must be labeled as such to
prevent the system from being used for fall arrest or work positioning
applications, which require greater structural strength.

3.2
PLAN your system before using this equipment. Consider all factors that
will affect your safety during use of this equipment. Consider the following
points when planning your system:
A.
WORK SITE GEOMETRY: The installation and use of the davit arm
and mounting base must be consistent with the geometric
requirements specified in sections 3.4 and 3.5. When suspending
working lines from the davit arm, check for obstructions or sharp edges
in the work path. Avoid working where the user may swing and hit an
object, or where lines may cross or tangle with that of another worker.
C.
BACK-UP FALL ARREST SYSTEM: When using the davit arm and
mounting base as a support for suspending a worker at a work level, or
for personnel riding applications, a back-up fall arrest system is
required. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28 and 1926.451. The davit arm has
an auxiliary connection point for a back-up personal fall arrest system.
D.
3.3
3.4
FIXED BASE: See Figure 4. The fixed base davit bases are for general
purpose use for most applications. The fixed base davit bases are
attached to concrete (8002040, 8004032) or other structural materials
(8002050, 8004031). A minimum of six equally spaced 1/2 inch
diameter fasteners are required to attach the davit base to the structure.
See Table 2 for fastener load requirements. DBI/SALA recommends
that all fixed base installations be done under the supervision of a
qualified person.
B.
WALL MOUNT: See Figure 5. The 8004273 and 8004274 davit bases
are used when bolting the davit arm to a wall or other vertical surface.
Use twelve 1/2 inch diameter fasteners to attach the davit base to the
structure. See Table 3 for fastener load requirements. The 8004230 and
8004235 davit bases are dimensionally the same, but are welded to
the structure. See below for information on welded installations.
C.
SHELF MOUNT: See Figure 6. The 8003773 davit base is used when a
shelf-type mounting on a wall or other vertical surface is required. Use

POST MOUNT: See Figure 7. The 8004392 davit base is used when a
single post can be inserted into a hole in the concrete or other
horizontal surface. A hole (3-1/16" in diameter) that is at least 6-1/4"
deep is required for the base to set into. A 1/2" bolt secures the post to
the horizontal surface. See Table 5 for fastener load requirements.

Do not position the davit arm where the worker will have to swing under
the davit arm to reach the work area. Avoid positioning the davit arm
where the working line may abrade against sharp edges when in use.
WARNING: Never allow the working line to extend outside the legs of the portable
base, tipping of the base could occur.

INSPECTION
FREQUENCY:
Before Each Use: Inspect according to steps listed in section 5.2 and 5.3.
Monthly: A formal inspection of the davit arm and base should be done
by a competent person other than the user. See sections 5.2 and 5.3.
Record inspection results in the inspection and maintenance log in
section 9.0 of this manual.
After a Fall Arrest: Inspect entire davit arm and base according to
section 5.3.
WARNING: If the davit arm and mounting base have been subjected to fall arrest
forces, they must be immediately removed from service and inspected. If the davit
arm or mounting base fails inspection remove from service and destroy, or
contact DBI/SALA for repair or replacement.
IMPORTANT: Extreme working conditions (harsh environments, prolonged use)
may require increasing the frequency of inspections.
5.2
Inspect all bolts and nuts to ensure they are secure. Check for
missing, substituted, or altered parts.
Step 2.
Upper arm and lower leg on davit arm must be straight and free of
cracks, dents, distortion, or any other damage.
Step 3.
Locking lever on davit arm must work prevent arm from turning
when locked.
Step 4.
Upper arm on davit arm must collapse properly and can be locked
into place with detent pin.
Step 5.
Step 6.
Step 7.
18
Step 9.
All labels must be present and fully legible. See section 8.0.
Step 10. Record results of inspection in the inspection and maintenance log
in section 9.0 of this manual.
Step 11. Inspect each system component in accordance to manufacturers
instructions.
5.3
NOTE: Only DBI/SALA or parties authorized in writing may make repairs to this
equipment.
