Chapter 1 Manual user guide

1.1 Introduction
1.1.1 Corrective maintenance
The network maintenance is based on the graphical supervision of the
network.
It is also based on the identification and the replacement of faulty items of
equipment, using the alarms and the notifications described in Nortel GSM
BSS Fault Management - Maintenance Principles (411-9001-039).
This process is divided into two steps (see Figure 1 "Guide to using the
maintenance manual" (page 14)).

locating and identifying the faulty items of equipment, using information

given in Nortel GSM BTS S8000/S8002/S8003/S8006 Fault Clearing
(411-9001-103).

replacing the faulty items of equipment, using the replacement

procedures given in this manual (see Figure 2 "Corrective maintenance
diagnostic" (page 15)).

When a faulty item of equipment sends an alarm to the OMC-R,

this alarm is identified by a fault number. Nortel GSM BTS
S8000/S8002/S8003/S8006 Fault Clearing (411-9001-103) gives the
procedures associated with the various fault numbers.
When a faulty item of equipment triggers several alarms, Nortel GSM
BSS Fault Clearing - Advanced Maintenance Procedures (411-9001-105)
enables the operator to locate this faulty item of equipment. It also helps
the operator when an abnormal operation occurs in a BTS, a TCU, a BSC,
PCM links, or on BTS entities.

1.1.2 Preventive maintenance

The implementation of the preventive maintenance procedures is the
responsibility of each customer.

12 Chapter 1 Manual user guide

Preventive maintenance is used to periodically test the items of equipment

that do not directly trigger any alarm at the OMC-R. However, the
execution of these procedures may trigger alarms at the OMC-R.
This process is divided into two steps (see Figure 1 "Guide to using the
maintenance manual" (page 14)):

the test procedures of the items of equipment

the replacement procedures of the items of equipment

All these procedures are described in this manual.

1.1.3 Intervention restrictions

There may be a lapse of time between the identification of the alarm at the
OMC-R and the time the operator responsible for the intervention arrives at
the site.
The operator must be synchronized with the OMC-R (by telephone) before
an on-site intervention, in the following cases:

isolating procedure
intervention because alarms are triggered at the OMC-R
completion of an on-site intervention
return to service procedure

1.1.4 Personnel and equipment safety

1.1.4.1 General personnel safety instructions
The personnel must obey the safety instructions specific to the installation
site:

rules concerning the premises (see instructions posted on site or in

the building)

rules linked to the general personnel safety instructions

The personnel working on the cabinet must be authorized to work

according to the security standards.
The cabinet main external power supply is turned off by opening the circuit
breaker on the operator box.
The mains power supply supplying the cabinet means that no work must
be done on the cabinet internal wiring without first cutting its external
mains power supply.

1.1 Introduction

13

This BTS has been evaluated under IEEE C95.1 (Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers C95.1) requirements, regarding safety levels with
respect to human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, 3
kHz to 300 GHz.
The leakage fields and equivalent power densities are orders of magnitude
less than the maximum permissible exposures (MPEs) given in the IEEE
safety guidelines.

1.1.4.2 Equipment safety instructions

The maintenance of an S8002 BTS is possible up to -40C (~ -40F).

The BTS stays operational with the open doors at -10C (~ -14F) during
three hours, and at -40C (~ -40F) during one hour.
In the case of rainy or snowy weather, do not open the cabinet doors
without a tent set up beforehand.

CAUTION
ESDS handling precautions
During every maintenance intervention, and especially when
handling the boards, the operator must wear an antistatic
bracelet.

DANGER
Electric shock
Never replace a power supply when energized.

3.2.3.4 Storage of batteries

Storage duration is dependent of the last recharge date.

For new batteries, the duration is calculated from the original charge
date. This date is indicated on a label under the format dd/mm/yy.

For batteries which were already recharged by Nortel, the new

duration is calculated from the last recharge cycle. The date of this
last recharge is manually noted on the label after each maintenance
operation.

3.4 Start-up phases

35

Check that the BTS starts correctly by monitoring the state of its LEDs
(see 3.4 Start-up phases (page 35)).

3.4 Start-up phases

The S8006 BTS start-up falls into a number of phases, that are
summarized in the following flowcharts (see Figure 9 "Start-up phases
of an S8006 BTS" (page 36)). The LEDs on the front panels of the BTS
boards allow you to follow this start-up (see Figure 10 "States of the LEDs
during start-up phases of a S8006 BTS" (page 39)).
When the state of a btsSiteManager object goes to "unlocked", the BTS
can send spontaneous messages to the controlling BSC (spontaneous
messages indicating the absence of certain items of equipment).
When a site starts up, the BTS does not know the hardware configuration,
necessary for the site definition and chosen by the operator. The choice is
that the BTS does not make alarms active about elements:

that make up the maximum configuration of a site

that are absent from the configuration when the site starts up

This choice requires at the OMC-R:

that the operator displays the hardware configuration of the site after
its start-up

that the operator checks the conformity between the hardware

configuration and the chosen configuration

To do this, perform a "Display" or "Display all" command on the

btsSiteManager object and check that the range value of the
"btsDescription" parameter is correct.

procedures
4.1 Introduction
4.1.1 Presentation
This chapter contains the preventive maintenance procedures applicable to
the S8006 BTS.
There are two types of procedure:

test procedures, given in this chapter (the structure of a test procedure

is described in 4.1.5 Description of a preventive maintenance
procedure sheet (page 45))

replacement procedures, given in Chapter 5 Replacement procedures

(page 73)

These procedures must be performed following the schedule given below

(twice a year, once a year, or every two years, etc..). Table 24 "Summary
of the preventive maintenance schedule of the S8006 BTS" (page

4.3 Check at the OMC-R

47

4.3 Check at the OMC-R

4.3.1 Preliminary checks before performing preventive maintenance
procedures
Preventive maintenance procedures on equipment can be performed only
when no alarm is present.
Before taking any action, check the equipment status in the "OMC-R
Browser" window at the OMC-R, which provides a means of graphically
monitoring the network.
If the graphical elements are gray, no alarm is active, so the preventive
maintenance can be performed.

4.3.2 Final checks after having performed preventive maintenance

procedures
After performing a preventive maintenance procedure, check that the
network has resumed its correct operation.
The graphical objects must appear without any alarm in the "OMC-R
Browser" browser windows at the OMC-R. The preventive maintenance
procedures are complete.
If there are alarms on the graphical objects concerned, check the condition
of the site using the "Display all" command on the btsSiteManager object:

If the operationalState is "enabled", clear the alarms to complete the

preventive maintenance procedures.

If the operationalState is "disabled", set the btsSiteManager object to

"locked" and then back to "unlocked", and then perform the "Display
hardware information" command of the btsSiteManager object:

If all equipment is operating, clear the active alarms. The

preventive maintenance procedures are complete.

If certain items of equipment have failed, refer to the replacement

procedures.

Chapter 5 Replacement procedures

5.1 Introduction
5.1.1 Presentation
This chapter contains the replacement procedures applicable to the
S8006 BTS. The operator must refer to the figures to locate the items
of equipment (boards and modules) concerned by the replacement
procedures.
New equipment at OMC-R identify the type of equipment to replace in
case of failure: DRX; PA or ePA or HePA; CMCF phase 1 or CMCF phase
2.
If present in the network, an e-DRX must be replaced by an e-DRX. A
DRX-ND3 must be replaced only by a DRX-ND3. Similarly, an (H)ePA
must be replaced by a (H)ePA, a CMCF phase 1 (resp. type 2) must be
replaced by a CMCF phase 1 (resp. type 2) on duplex S8002 BTS.
Two types of customers may be distinguished:

Customer using HePA/(e)PA mixed cell in concentric cell: a HePA

must be replaced by a HePA and an (e)PA must be replaced by an
(e)PA.

Other customers: an e-DRX or a DRX-ND3 can replace a failing DRX,

an ePA (or a HePA) can replace a PA if the number of the (H)(e)PA in
the BTS respects the HePA supported configurations. A CMCF phase
1 can replace a CMCF phase 2 (and vice versa).

5.1.2 Description of a replacement procedure sheet

Chapter 5 Replacement procedures

Gasket corners (procedure applicable in the warehouse)

Step

Action

Inject the LOCTITE AS310 silicone or an equivalent, with a 2 - 3

mm diameter injector and a mastic gun, in the corner hole. Do
not damage the gaskets and do not increase the hole diameter.

Apply a light pressure on the corner to avoid the concentration of

a thick silicone layer and to have the silicone excess overflowed
(inward and outward side).

Check that there is no hole left.

Remove the silicone overflow with a clean rag (if possible, try to
avoid contact with the skin).

Avoid spreading the silicone on the gasket outer surface. There

must not be any remaining mark of silicone beyond a 5 mm width
on both sides of the 455 cut of the gasket (see Figure 38 "View
of the door gaskets" (page 122)).

Exceptional case:

If there is no contact between the two gaskets, pour some

silicone with the injector on the two gaskets (see Figure 39
"Silicone deposit at a door gasket corner" (page 123)).

Then, with the finger, press lightly on the gaskets towards

the gap, r, to concentrate the silicone in the gap. This action
allows not to have a silicone excess inside the gasket.

Repeat for each of the other seven gasket corners.

Apply a light pressure on each repaired corner, and check that

the silicone does not overflow anymore. Place your fingers on
the gasket to check that the silicone is quite dry and does not
tend to stick.

CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
If the silicone (on the corners) is not completely dry
when closing the doors, it can stick to the opposite
metal frame of the door. So, when opening the
doors the next time, the gaskets may be damaged
irremediably.

Gasket corners (procedure applicable on site)

Step

Action

In the case of an in-warehouse retrofit, it is recommended to

perform the above procedure even if the below procedure is
applicable.

ATTENTION
If the corner join between the vertical and horizontal gaskets is not
completely closed, it is not a problem, as the silicone barrier ensures
complete impermeability.

Apply the anti-stick agent LOCTITE DM4 (or an equivalent) to

the inner skin of the door in front of the damaged corner. Cover
an area of 20 mm square (see Figure 40 "Front view of an inner
corner of a door" (page 124)).

Apply a line of a LOCTITE AS310 silicone or an equivalent along

the edge of the gasket :

For the corners located on the side of the cabinet, apply

a silicone line along the top and side edge of the gasket
extending 10 mm in both directions from the corner (see
Figure 41 "Front view of a door gasket corner" (page
125) and Figure 42 "Side view of a door gasket corner" (page
126)).

For the corner located in the middle of the cabinet, apply a

silicone line only along the top edge of the gasket extending
10 mm in both directions from the center of the door axis (see
Figure 42 "Side view of a door gasket corner" (page 126) and
Figure 43 "Front view of two door gaskets" (page 127)).

Close the doors.

Chapter 6 LNS-DACS technical manual

This manual covers installation, maintenance and technical description for
the Low Noise Direct Ambient Cooling System of BTS cabinets, deployed
at street level.

6.1 Installation
6.1.1 Equipment inspection
Upon receipt, the unit should be inspected immediately for both external
and internal damage. Any such damage should be reported at once to
the carrier and the factory responsible for the units manufacture. The
inspection should be carried out as follows.
Remove the lid by means of the four countersunk screws, disconnect the
earthing strap and place carefully to one side. Inspect the inside of the unit
for obvious damage and ensure that all plugs are properly inserted and
that all connections are tight, especially those to the storage capacitor, C1
and rectifier bridges, BR1 and BR2.
Reconnect the earthing strap and replace the lid.

6.1.2 Installation
The unit is now ready for installation and should be positioned carefully
into place in the BTS cabinet, making sure that the gaskets are not scuffed
or damaged in the procedure. Secure the unit into position by means of
M6 screws through the fixing holes located on the two side flanges.

6.1.3 Electrical connections (see label)

Wiring to the unit is effected by connecting the three wire harnesses into
their corresponding sockets. SKT1 is for dc power, SKT2 for AC power
and SKT3 for alarm outputs c the plugs are all different, so incorrect
connection is not possible.
The unit is factory set to run at an internal cabinet temperature of 25C and
for fan speed operation. Should alternative settings be desired, remove the
access plate at the left front of the unit and make adjustments as detailed
later in "Control Options".
Replace the access plate.

6.1.4 Filter clog switch connections (see label)

6.1 Installation

175

Connections to the filter clog switch are made by means of the two plastic
hoses that exit from the top, right-hand side of the LNS-DACS. The front
hose is the low pressure and the rear the high pressure connection. These
should be uncoiled and routed to the appropriate positions on the BTS
cabinet.
The unit is now ready for commissioning.

6.1.5 Commissioning
Turn on power to the BTS cabinet; the fans in the LNS-DACS unit will
ramp up slowly to their normal operational speed. Provided the internal
temperature of the BTS cubicle is below the set temperature (see control
operation), there should be virtually no air exiting from the exhaust ducts
at the front of the BTS cabinet. After a while, determined by conditions
of internal cabinet load and external temperature, the internal cabinet
temperature will reach the set temperature and the damper will start to
open. This may be inferred by an increase of air from the exhaust ports
at the front of the BTS cabinet. After equilibrium has been established, a
thermocouple or similar device, inserted in the exit duct, should register a
temperature close to the chosen set point.

6.1.6 Other checks

There are various other quick tests that can be made to check the correct
operation of the unit.

6.1.7 Filter clog alarm

Short circuit the filter clog switch with a suitable wire link. The green LED
should extinguish and the external alarm connection AL2-AL GND should
go open circuit.
Remove plug P7 - the blowers should revert to high speed and shorting
the filter clog switch should not generate an alarm.

6.1.8 Air flow failure

This may be tested by disconnecting a blower by removal of either plug
P4A or P4B. The red LED should extinguish and the external alarm
connection AL1-AL GND should go open circuit.
If the system is running at the lower fan speed, the other blower should
revert to high-speed operation.

6.1.9 Damper operation

Removal of plug P1 simulates a low cabinet temperature and the damper
should close to outside air; shorting plug P7 (with a suitable wire)
simulates a high temperature and the damper should open to outside air.

176

Chapter 6 LNS-DACS technical manual

6.1.10 Fan speed

For normal room ambients, the blowers should run at low speed. A short
circuit on plug P7 simulates a high ambient temperature and should cause
the blower speed to increase. A blower failure should cause the other
blower to run at high speed.

6.1.11 Heater circuit failure

Removal of plug P1 will simulate a low temperature condition: the damper
will close (if not already closed) and the heater will energize. To check the
alarm, remove power and disconnect one wire from the heater thermostat
HRS. Re-apply power and disconnect P1. The heater will not energize, the
yellow LED should extinguish and the external alarm connection AL1-AL
GND should go open circuit.

6.2 Technical aspects

6.2.1 Specification
The range of input supplies is as follows:

AC: 207 to 253 V ac 50Hz (nominal voltage 230 V ac)

DC: -40.5 to -60 V dc (nominal -54.5 V dc)

6.2.2 Construction
The LNS-DACS cabinet is constructed from sheet steel, coated with an
aluminium/zinc/silicon alloy (Aluzinc 185). The metalwork is left unpainted
to ensure good electrical bonding between the component parts, essential
for the control of electromagnetic radiation from and into the unit. To avoid
corrosion, no parts are welded.

6.2.3 Twin blowers

The blowers serve to circulate air through the BTS cabinet, to cool the
internal loads. The blowers are brushless dc types, powered either by the
internal transformer/rectifier unit at low temperatures or by the BTS rectifier
at normal temperatures.
They incorporate a soft-start feature that ramps up their speed slowly
and minimizes inrush currents. Each provides a fan running signal (5 V
square wave), employed to annunciate a fan failure. The blower speed is
controlled by means of a 0-10 V dc signal.

6.2.4 Air-directing damper

The damper, which rotates around a pivot point close to the base, is used
to control air movement within the LNS-DACS unit. When fully closed, the
damper excludes outside air and air is circulated within the BTS cabinet; at
the other extreme, when the damper is fully open, there is no recirculation

6.2 Technical aspects

177

and the cooling unit operates by drawing in outside air which is then routed
through the BTS cabinet and ejected via the outlet ducts at the front of the
BTS cabinet.
At intermediate positions, the damper is adjusted automatically to
give a mix of recirculated and fresh air to achieve the internal working
temperature.

6.2.5 Damper modulating motor

The damper is controlled directly by the modulating motor. Operation of
the damper between extreme positions is achieved within a motor rotation
of approximately 45 degrees, so that the motor is not limited by its end
stops in either direction. This guarantees a very good seal against outside
or recirculated air, since the motor can apply maximum pressure to the
sealing gaskets.
The dc motor that drives the gearbox of the actuator is brushed and rated
for continuous operation under stalled conditions; its life expectancy
is in excess of five years. The actuator is equipped with a feedback
potentiometer that is used by the controller to control damper position. The
damper motor can exert a maximum closing force of 5.6 Nm.

6.2.6 Filter clog switch

The filter, located in the BTS cabinet, is monitored by the filter clog switch
which functions by operating a micro-switch in response to movements of
a large area diaphragm induced by pressure differences either side of it. It
is factory-adjusted to provide a contact closure to the control board when
the pressure drop across the filter exceeds 50 Pascals.

6.2.7 Temperature control elements

Temperature control of the unit is effected by two high quality thermistors,
having an accuracy of +/-0.2C between 0 and 70C. The elements are
encased in epoxy resin within an aluminium case.
The first device (connected to plug P1 on the control board) is located
above a hole on the left-hand side panel. This hole, which communicates
with the exhaust port, ensures that the thermistor is always in a moving
air stream, regardless of damper position. The thermistor measures the
temperature of the internal equipment cabinet.
The other thermistor (connected to plug P7 on the control board), is
located in the air inlet duct and measures the ambient air temperature.
This information is used to control the speed of the blowers.

Chapter 6 LNS-DACS technical manual

6.2.8 Heater

The heater element, used to maintain the BTS cabinet above +5 C, is
located in the fan outlet duct. It has a rating of 1.25kW at the nominal input
of 230 V ac and is equipped with stainless steel fins, to maximize heat
transfer. The element is turned off at +10C, for rising temperature, and
energized at 5C for falling temperature.

6.2.9 Heater thermostat

The heater element is protected against over temperature, generated
by air failure or blockage within the BTS cabinet, by a manual-reset
thermostat located on the top of the fan discharge duct and over the
element. It is set to alarm at 106.5C.

6.2.10 Rectifier/capacitor assembly

The transformer/rectifier unit consists of two rectifier bridges and storage
capacitor, situated towards the front of the cabinet. This arrangement,
which is powered by the main transformer, provides approximately 42 V
dc, and is used to supply the blowers at temperatures below 0C when the
main BTS rectifier is inactive.

6.2.11 Transformer
The transformer is a torroidal type. It is encased in epoxy resin that offers
protection against the effects of high humidity likely in the interior of the
LNS-DACS. It has an output of 35 V at 4.5 A and a voltage regulation of
less than 5%.

6.2.12 Connection sockets

There are three sockets, positioned on the right-hand side of the unit, for
interconnection to the BTS cabinet.
The top socket (two way) is for dc power, the next (three way) for AC
power, while the bottom socket (4 way) is for alarm outputs from the unit.

6.2.13 Printed circuit assembly (PCA) for control and power distribution
Control of the LNS-DACS and power distribution therein is accomplished
by this assembly and is described below in later sections. The control
assembly is tropicalized to afford protection against the effects of high
humidity.

6.2.14 Alarm LEDs

The alarm LEDs, which may be viewed from the front of the LNS-DACS
through a window in the access plate, are normally illuminated when
healthy and extinguish on alarm. They are red for fan failure, yellow for
heater circuit failure and green for clogged filter.

6.3 LNS-DACS operation

179

6.3 LNS-DACS operation

6.3.1 General principles
For normal outside temperatures, the inner cabinet aims to run at a
constant temperature, as defined by the setting on the control assembly.
Once achieved, the air damper opens to admit external air, and controls
the inner cabinet environment by mixing appropriate amounts of outside
and recirculated air. The blowers drive air down the rear duct and into the
equipment enclosure via slots at the rear. Return air to the LNS-DACS is
routed through the set of holes in the base, with excess air being rejected
from the exhaust ducts at the front of the BTS cabinet.

6.3.2 Specific modes

The LNS-DACS functions in four operational modes, dictated solely
by information from the cabinet temperature thermistor (plug P1). The
required cabinet temperature is defined as Ts.

6.3.3 Low temperature

-40 degrees Celsius < Tcab < 10 degrees Celsius
In this region, the heater is energized, the damper is closed to the outside,
and air is recirculated via the holes in the base of the LNS-DACS. The
total area of these holes is chosen to maintain a near-constant static
pressure on the blowers, irrespective of damper position.

6.3.4 Medium temperature

10 degrees Celsius < Tcab < Ts
Once the cabinet temperature has reached 10C, the heater is switched
off, the damper remains closed, and further heating of the equipment
enclosure is achieved solely by the internal equipment loading.

6.3.5 Normal temperature

Tcab = Ts
The control circuitry aims to run the cabinet at Ts, whenever the conditions
of load and external temperature allow. In this regime, the damper
position is controlled automatically by the modulating motor, mixing
appropriate amounts of recirculated and external air to maintain a constant
temperature. Excess air is ejected from the vents at the front of the BTS
cabinet.

6.3.6 High temperature

Tcab > Ts

180

Chapter 6 LNS-DACS technical manual

At higher outside temperatures, although the damper is fully open, the

LNS-DACS is unable to maintain the cabinet temperature to Ts which now
rises in sympathy with the external temperature. At an outside temperature
of 45C, the internal cabinet will rise to a nominal 55C under fully loaded
conditions.

6.3.7 Fan speed control

As long as the cabinet temperature is at, or below, Ts, the fans will be
running at their lower speed setting. However, for ambient temperatures
above Ts, the damper will be fully open and, when it reaches 35C, the fan
speed will be increased automatically to minimize the temperature rise in
the internal equipment cubicle. As the outside temperature falls, the fans
will revert to low speed operation at an ambient of 30C.
This feature is important, since it reduces the acoustic noise for the
majority of the year and, more especially at night, when the call density (or
cabinet loading) and outside temperature are likely to be at their lowest.

6.3.8 Control and power distribution assembly

This section deals with the detailed workings of the printed circuit
assembly (PCA). This assembly is responsible not only for control and
supervision of the LNS-DACS, but also for directing both ac and dc power
within the equipment.

6.3.9 Power distribution

The alternating supply is routed to plug P2 on the PCA. It then passes
through an EMC filter, to feed the heater element and main transformer
T1. The heater is protected against over temperature by a manual reset
thermostat, HRS.
The secondary winding of T1 feeds bridge rectifier BR1, the dc output of
which is smoothed by the computer-grade electrolytic capacitor C1. The
resulting voltage level (approximately 42 V dc at the nominal 230 V ac
input) is used to provide power to the direct-drive, dc blowers, the PCA
control and supervisory circuitry.
DC power from the BTS rectifier also feeds the PCA on plug P3; the
positive pole (grounded in the BTS cabinet) is connected directly, whilst
the negative pole is routed via a diode of bridge rectifier BR2. For cabinet
temperatures between -40 and +7C, dc power to the LNS-DACS is
supplied by the internal transformer-rectifier unit (TRU). Above 0C, the
main TRU in the BTS cabinet becomes active. Because of its higher
output voltage and the diode effect of the two rectifiers, this TRU now
takes over the running of the unit and the internal TRU is left on, but idling.

6.3 LNS-DACS operation

181

The blowers, fed from plugs P4A and P4B, are fused individually so that a
catastrophic failure of one blower will not affect the other. The fuse links
F1 and F2, which are 10 A, fast blow ceramic types, must be replaced by
exact equivalents.

6.3.10 Control power supplies

The control board operates from a 24 V dc supply, produced from the raw
rectified supplies by regulator REG1 and associated components. Setting
up of the 24 V level is effected by means of potentiometer VR1, the only
adjustment on the board; this level may be measured on tests points TP1
and TP2. The voltage level is factory set and should not be altered except
in extraordinary circumstances. A center supply of 12 V is also used.

6.3.11 Temperature sensing

Measurement of the cabinet temperature is carried out by a
close-tolerance thermistor (+/-0.2C in the range 0 to 70C), linearized by
a parallel resistor. The combination is driven by a constant current of 0.5
mA. The resulting temperature-dependent voltage is buffered to give an
output of 46 mV/C. To ensure a rapid response from the thermistor, it
is mounted over a hole in the left-hand side panel of the LNS-DACS, to
guarantee a supply of cabinet exhaust air across the device at all times.

6.3.12 Ts reference
The reference voltage relevant to the cabinet internal temperature is
selectable by means of DIL switch SW1. SW1/1 off and SW1/2 on will
run the cabinet at 35C, whilst SW1/1 on and SW1/2 on will give a Ts of
25C. The actual setting is defined by the user and is dependent on the
prevailing weather conditions in the operational area.

6.3.13 Error amplifier

Information from the cabinet temperature thermistor is offset against the
voltage from the actuator feedback potentiometer and fed to an error
amplifier. The output of the error amplifier controls the damper motor drive
circuitry.

6.3.14 Damper motor drive

This circuit is capable of driving the motor in either direction as well as
stopping it at any position, as directed by the output of the error amplifier.
This balance occurs when the voltage from the error amplifier matches the
buffered output from the feedback potentiometer of the damper motor.
Diodes D1 and D2 provide dynamic braking to the actuator motor. This
action prevents unwanted damper movements by forces imposed on
the damper by the static pressure generated at the suction inlets of the
blowers.

182

Chapter 6 LNS-DACS technical manual

The temperature change required to move the damper from one extreme
to the other is approximately 2C. To prevent the damper from responding
to very small changes, the control also incorporates a dead zone of 0.6C.
This, and the current limiting imposed by the series resistor during stalled
motor conditions, serves to maximize the life of the actuator motor.
Connections to the modulating motor are effected via connector P5.

6.3.15 Heater drive circuit

Information from the cabinet sensor is also used to control the operation
of the heater. For rising cabinet temperature, the heater is de-energized
at +10C and re-energized at +5C as the temperature falls. The 5C
hysteresis prevents erratic operation of the heater. The element is
powered by means of relay HTR via the current transformer CT1 and
heater safety thermostat HRS. The thermostat must be manually reset
following a trip.

6.3.16 Alarms
The control board features three alarm circuits, two critical and one
maintenance. The alarm relays (RA1, RA2) and respective LEDs are
energized when healthy. The alarm LEDs may be viewed through a
window at the front of the unit.
Volt-free, normally closed contacts for the alarms are routed, via connector
P6, to the customer terminal block. The maintenance alarm appears on
terminal AL2, whilst the critical alarms are summarized and fed to terminal
AL1. Both outputs are with respect to the AL GND terminal. The alarm
contacts open to alarm. In the event of power failure to the PCA, both
alarms will be activated.

6.3.17 Critical alarm 1: Heater failure

On a call for heating, generated by cabinet temperatures below 5C, the

alarm relay RA1 is held in an energized state provided that current is
detected in the heater element; if there is no current, the relay drops out
and an alarm is given. Since this alarm requires current in the heater,
it registers any fault in the heater circuit, including element failure,
open-circuit thermostat or fractured wire.

6.3.18 Critical alarm 2: Fan failure

The dc blowers, connected to plugs P4A and P4B, each generate a square
wave signal during healthy operation. These signals are used to reset the
counters IC6 and IC7; should either counter time out, the alarm relay RA1
is de-energized and an alarm given.

ATTENTION
If either fan fails, the other one is automatically driven at the higher speed.

6.4 Troubleshooting

183

6.3.19 Maintenance alarm: Filter clog

The pressure drop across the air filter, mounted in the BTS cabinet,
is monitored by an adjustable diaphragm switch (factory preset to the
specified static pressure drop). When the filter is deemed to be clogged,
the switch closes, de-energizes alarm relay RA2 and an alarm is given.
This alarm is inhibited at high fan speed if the unit is running in the fan
speed option.

6.3.20 Controller options

Switch SW1 has three positions - the first two define the cabinet working
temperature. For 35C operation, set SW1/1 to off and SW1/2 to on;
for 25C operation, set both positions to on. The choice of cabinet
temperature is site-dependent.
The third position over-rides the fan speed control and constrains the
blowers to run always at high speed - with this set-up, the filter clog switch
is not inhibited.
The header H1 has four positions and is used to define the high and
low fan speeds. For the LNS-DACS unit, the shorting links should be in
positions 2 and 4. Positions 1 and 3 are reserved for other DACS type
units.

6.4 Troubleshooting
This section is included to assist the service person - it is not meant to
be an exhaustive list of possible faults since it is anticipated that service
personnel will be well trained on the functioning of the unit.

In order to check the running operation of the blowers, replace the

lid of the LNS-DACS and remove the front access plate. To ensure
adequate static pressure on the blowers, the damper must be closed.
This may be achieved by disconnecting plug P1. Note! this action will
also energize the heater and should not be prolonged. Restore power
to the LNS-DACS and check that the blowers are running smoothly
and that the bearings are not making excessive noise.

Blowers deemed faulty should be replaced.

Replace P1 and access plate.
Record and report actions taken.

7.4 TX test

207

7.4 TX test
7.4.1 Introduction
This test enables a TX to be configured in a special test mode in order to
monitor its transmission power in a given channel.
The following procedure is performed either in standalone mode (BTS
not operational) or in connected mode after TX isolation (see Nortel
GSM TML (BTS) Commissioning and Configuration - TML User Guide
(411-9001-051).

7.4.2 TX test procedure

Step

Action

Equipment installation
Install the measuring equipment on the transmission channel
and check that the transmitter load is correct (see Figure 60
"Installation for the TX test procedure" (page 208)).

TX isolation
a Isolate the TX.
b Install the test bench of the power measurement.

Checks
a For the TX to be examined, run the "BCCH configuration"
menu of the PA object.
b Enter the value "44" (maximum output power in dBm).
c Enter the value of the selected channel (either the value of
the frequency of the TX being measured, or the value "699"
that is the central value of the DSC 1800 band).
A message indicates the correct configuration, once the TX
received the information. The TX begins to transmit.
d Read the value displayed by the measuring device.
e Add the attenuation caused by the measurement and the
other one caused by the combiner and the internal cables.
f

Check that the final result corresponds to the theoretical

value.

TX de-isolation
De-isolate the TX.

ATTENTION
The transmission is stopped during the de-isolation operation.
