1.1 Introduction
13
This BTS has been evaluated under IEEE C95.1 (Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers C95.1) requirements, regarding safety levels with
respect to human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, 3
kHz to 300 GHz.
The leakage fields and equivalent power densities are orders of magnitude
less than the maximum permissible exposures (MPEs) given in the IEEE
safety guidelines.
CAUTION
ESDS handling precautions
During every maintenance intervention, and especially when
handling the boards, the operator must wear an antistatic
bracelet.
DANGER
Electric shock
Never replace a power supply when energized.

6.1 Installation
6.1.1 Equipment inspection
Upon receipt, the unit should be inspected immediately for both external
and internal damage. Any such damage should be reported at once to
the carrier and the factory responsible for the units manufacture. The
inspection should be carried out as follows.
Remove the lid by means of the four countersunk screws, disconnect the
earthing strap and place carefully to one side. Inspect the inside of the unit
for obvious damage and ensure that all plugs are properly inserted and
that all connections are tight, especially those to the storage capacitor, C1
and rectifier bridges, BR1 and BR2.
Reconnect the earthing strap and replace the lid.
6.1.2 Installation
The unit is now ready for installation and should be positioned carefully
into place in the BTS cabinet, making sure that the gaskets are not scuffed
or damaged in the procedure. Secure the unit into position by means of
M6 screws through the fixing holes located on the two side flanges.
174
Wiring to the unit is effected by connecting the three wire harnesses into
their corresponding sockets. SKT1 is for dc power, SKT2 for AC power
and SKT3 for alarm outputs c the plugs are all different, so incorrect
connection is not possible.
The unit is factory set to run at an internal cabinet temperature of 25C and
for fan speed operation. Should alternative settings be desired, remove the
access plate at the left front of the unit and make adjustments as detailed
later in "Control Options".
Replace the access plate.
6.1 Installation
175
Connections to the filter clog switch are made by means of the two plastic
hoses that exit from the top, right-hand side of the LNS-DACS. The front
hose is the low pressure and the rear the high pressure connection. These
should be uncoiled and routed to the appropriate positions on the BTS
cabinet.
The unit is now ready for commissioning.
6.1.5 Commissioning
Turn on power to the BTS cabinet; the fans in the LNS-DACS unit will
ramp up slowly to their normal operational speed. Provided the internal
temperature of the BTS cubicle is below the set temperature (see control
operation), there should be virtually no air exiting from the exhaust ducts
at the front of the BTS cabinet. After a while, determined by conditions
of internal cabinet load and external temperature, the internal cabinet
temperature will reach the set temperature and the damper will start to
open. This may be inferred by an increase of air from the exhaust ports
at the front of the BTS cabinet. After equilibrium has been established, a
thermocouple or similar device, inserted in the exit duct, should register a
temperature close to the chosen set point.
176
6.2.2 Construction
The LNS-DACS cabinet is constructed from sheet steel, coated with an
aluminium/zinc/silicon alloy (Aluzinc 185). The metalwork is left unpainted
to ensure good electrical bonding between the component parts, essential
for the control of electromagnetic radiation from and into the unit. To avoid
corrosion, no parts are welded.
177
and the cooling unit operates by drawing in outside air which is then routed
through the BTS cabinet and ejected via the outlet ducts at the front of the
BTS cabinet.
At intermediate positions, the damper is adjusted automatically to
give a mix of recirculated and fresh air to achieve the internal working
temperature.
178
6.2.8 Heater
The heater element, used to maintain the BTS cabinet above +5 C, is
located in the fan outlet duct. It has a rating of 1.25kW at the nominal input
of 230 V ac and is equipped with stainless steel fins, to maximize heat
transfer. The element is turned off at +10C, for rising temperature, and
energized at 5C for falling temperature.
6.2.11 Transformer
The transformer is a torroidal type. It is encased in epoxy resin that offers
protection against the effects of high humidity likely in the interior of the
LNS-DACS. It has an output of 35 V at 4.5 A and a voltage regulation of
less than 5%.
6.2.13 Printed circuit assembly (PCA) for control and power distribution
Control of the LNS-DACS and power distribution therein is accomplished
by this assembly and is described below in later sections. The control
assembly is tropicalized to afford protection against the effects of high
humidity.
179
180
181
The blowers, fed from plugs P4A and P4B, are fused individually so that a
catastrophic failure of one blower will not affect the other. The fuse links
F1 and F2, which are 10 A, fast blow ceramic types, must be replaced by
exact equivalents.
6.3.12 Ts reference
The reference voltage relevant to the cabinet internal temperature is
selectable by means of DIL switch SW1. SW1/1 off and SW1/2 on will
run the cabinet at 35C, whilst SW1/1 on and SW1/2 on will give a Ts of
25C. The actual setting is defined by the user and is dependent on the
prevailing weather conditions in the operational area.
182
The temperature change required to move the damper from one extreme
to the other is approximately 2C. To prevent the damper from responding
to very small changes, the control also incorporates a dead zone of 0.6C.
This, and the current limiting imposed by the series resistor during stalled
motor conditions, serves to maximize the life of the actuator motor.
Connections to the modulating motor are effected via connector P5.
6.3.16 Alarms
The control board features three alarm circuits, two critical and one
maintenance. The alarm relays (RA1, RA2) and respective LEDs are
energized when healthy. The alarm LEDs may be viewed through a
window at the front of the unit.
Volt-free, normally closed contacts for the alarms are routed, via connector
P6, to the customer terminal block. The maintenance alarm appears on
terminal AL2, whilst the critical alarms are summarized and fed to terminal
AL1. Both outputs are with respect to the AL GND terminal. The alarm
contacts open to alarm. In the event of power failure to the PCA, both
alarms will be activated.
ATTENTION
If either fan fails, the other one is automatically driven at the higher speed.

7.4 TX test
7.4.1 Introduction
This test enables a TX to be configured in a special test mode in order to
monitor its transmission power in a given channel.
The following procedure is performed either in standalone mode (BTS
not operational) or in connected mode after TX isolation (see Nortel
GSM TML (BTS) Commissioning and Configuration - TML User Guide
(411-9001-051).
Action
Equipment installation
Install the measuring equipment on the transmission channel
and check that the transmitter load is correct (see Figure 60
"Installation for the TX test procedure" (page 208)).
TX isolation
a Isolate the TX.
b Install the test bench of the power measurement.
Checks
a For the TX to be examined, run the "BCCH configuration"
menu of the PA object.
b Enter the value "44" (maximum output power in dBm).
c Enter the value of the selected channel (either the value of
the frequency of the TX being measured, or the value "699"
that is the central value of the DSC 1800 band).
A message indicates the correct configuration, once the TX
received the information. The TX begins to transmit.
d Read the value displayed by the measuring device.
e Add the attenuation caused by the measurement and the
other one caused by the combiner and the internal cables.
f
TX de-isolation
De-isolate the TX.
ATTENTION
The transmission is stopped during the de-isolation operation.
