Chapter 4
FORCES
What is a force?
A force can be a push or a pull. For
example, when you push open a door
you have to apply a force to the door.
You also have to apply a force to pull
open a drawer.
Effect of force
You cannot see a force but often you
can see what it does.
Forces can:
Change the speed of an object
Change the direction of
movement of an object
Change the shape of an object
Measuring forces
Forces can be measured
using a force meter, also
called a newton meter.
Force meters contain a
spring connected to a metal
hook. The spring stretches
when a force is applied to
the hook. The bigger the
force applied, the longer the
spring stretches and the
bigger the reading.
The unit of force is called the Newton,
and it has the symbol N.
Resultant force
Usually, more than one force is acting
on an object. In order to work out the
effect of these forces on the object, we
need to calculate whats known as
resultant force
Types of Forces
A variety of force types were placed
into two broad category headings on
the basis of whether the force resulted
from the contact or non-contact of the
two interacting objects.

Unbalanced Forces
When two or more forces acting on an
object are not balanced, the object will
accelerate. This net force is known as
the unbalanced force or the resultant
force.
01. Force
A. Ability to do work
B. A push or pull
02. Friction
A. When items work together
B. A force that one surface exerts
on another when the two rub
against each other.
03. Weight
A. Measure of the force of gravity
on an object
B. Measure of the amount of matter
in an object.
04. Gravity
A. Pull of acceleration
B. A force that attracts objects to
each other
05. Indicate, for the following situations,
if the force acting is a push or a pull:
i.
Opening a drawer
ii.
A tennis player hitting a ball
with a racket
iii.
Moving a trolley in a
supermarket closing a shutter
