Chapter 4
FORCES
What is a force?
A force can be a push or a pull. For
example, when you push open a door
you have to apply a force to the door.
You also have to apply a force to pull
open a drawer.
Effect of force
You cannot see a force but often you
can see what it does.
Forces can:
Change the speed of an object
Change the direction of
movement of an object
Change the shape of an object

Measuring forces
Forces can be measured
using a force meter, also
called a newton meter.
Force meters contain a
spring connected to a metal
hook. The spring stretches
when a force is applied to
the hook. The bigger the
force applied, the longer the
spring stretches and the
bigger the reading.
The unit of force is called the Newton,
and it has the symbol N.
Resultant force
Usually, more than one force is acting
on an object. In order to work out the
effect of these forces on the object, we
need to calculate whats known as
resultant force

Types of Forces
A variety of force types were placed
into two broad category headings on
the basis of whether the force resulted
from the contact or non-contact of the
two interacting objects.
Contact
Forces
Frictional Force
Tension Force
Normal Force
Air Resistance
Force
Applied Force
Spring Force

Non-contact
Forces
Gravitational
Force
Electrical Force
Magnetic Force

If two forces are acting in the same

direction:
the magnitude of the resultant force
is the sum of the magnitudes of the
two forces
the resultant acts in the same
direction.

If the forces are in opposite directions:

the magnitude of the resultant is
found by subtracting one force from
the other
in this case it helps to think of one
direction being the positive
direction

Balanced Forces:

An object may have several forces

acting on it. But if the forces are in
balance, they cancel each other out.
Then, the object behaves as if no force
is applied to it.

Unbalanced Forces
When two or more forces acting on an
object are not balanced, the object will
accelerate. This net force is known as
the unbalanced force or the resultant
force.

When the forces are balanced, an

object is either at rest, or moving at a
constant velocity.
