y a
r de una misma Base; 2) qu las piezas fueran completamente planas y no
fcilmente desarmables (cerradas); y, 3) qu el modelo a formar o ensamblar fuera lo ms
sible.

Flapping Bat

Intermediate

I got the idea to design a flapping bat

after happening upon Tom Hulls
Flapping Bat on YouTube. My original
idea was to try to make a simpler flapping
bat than his, but, obviously, that ambition
did not come to fruition!

I usually perform this model following the Pop-up Housewife (page 114) and Pop-up Househusband
(page 118). Hold up the closed card and say, What kind of house is this? To whatever the audience
says, respond, No, this is Batmans house. Should we open it? [Audience says, Ya.] I think
wed better knock on the door first. Ready, set, everyone say, Knock, knock! [Knock on the
house as the audience says, Knock, Knock!] Peek into the closed card and say, Hmm, looks like
hes not home. Well, then, lets open it. Ready set everyone say, Pop-up! [Audience says,
Pop-up!] Open the card and exclaim, Its Batman! But the MAN left, so now its just the BAT!
Everyone flap your wings like a bat!

Star Bird Pop-up Card

Excerpt from Origami Pop-ups to Amaze and Amuse

By Jeremy Shafer 2008

Intermediate

What exactly is a Star Bird? Previously, it was a Milton

Bradley Space Ship toy popular in the 1980s. But since
that fad is dead, a new definition must be found, and what
better time than now!... So, I hereby declare Star Bird to be
defined as any bird that can transform into a star. And, so
far, I know of only one the bird in this origami pop-up
card! And now you too can get in on this trendy new trend
and own your very own Star Bird today!

Colored side up,

valley-fold and unfold.

Valley-fold

the flaps. This requires reaching
underneath the top layer. For
extra help, look up into the cloud.

Turn over
left-to-right.

Valley-fold edge-to-crease.

Reverse-fold.

If you dont mind an extra

crease on the card, you can
make step 9 easier, by
first valley-folding and
unfolding on all layers and
then attempting step 9.

Turn over.

Valley-fold the
two flaps down.

flaps edge-to-crease.

24

Valley-fold, bringing
the black dots to the
horizontal edges.

Hold up the closed card and say,

This pop-up card is the star of
the show! Ready, set, everyone
say, Pop-up! [Audience says,
Pop-up.] Open the card showing
the bird and exclaim, The star of
the show! [Audience raises
eyebrows.] Say, What, you dont
think its a star?! Look it can even
dance! (step 38) [Audience remains
unconvinced] Ill show you that
its a star! Turn the model over,
revealing the star, and exclaim, You
see?! I told you it was the star of
the show! Never doubt me again!

the flap. Mountain-fold
and unfold it as well.
Repeat this step two or
three times so that the
crease is well... creased!

Reverse-fold the flap.

Basically, just shove it in! This
fold wont be very clean on
the hidden interior layers, but
unless the model gets
inspected by an origami x-ray
machine, no one will know.

the tiny flap.
Below: Pinch to form
the beak.

39

The Star Bird has popped up and is waiting for the chance
to dance. Repeatedly open and close the card and the bird
will do a dance. To transform the bird into a star, open the
card, pulling it as wide as possible, and, in a sudden motion,
turn the model over.

Unfold the
interior flap.

The Starbird is a Star!

Open the card and ask, Whats this? [Audience says, A bird.] Respond, No, its a starfish. [Audience
raises eyebrows.] Turn it around so that the audience sees the star, and say, Well, I guess it does look
[Audience says,
Because it IS a star] Say, Oh no! Now YOU all are going crazy! I better put this model away!
