TUJUAN PEMBELAJARAN
1.To enable students to understand and enjoy the

central idea, thoughts of the poetry and beauty

What is poetry?
Poetry - A type of writing that uses language to
express imaginative and emotional qualities
instead of or in addition to meaning.
Poetry may be written as individual poems or
included in other written forms as in dramatic
poetry, hymns, or song lyrics.

Purpose of Poetry
To express ideas, feelings and emotions.

Structure of Poetry
Stanza
A stanza is a group of lines in a poem. It is often
called a verse.

Structure of Poetry

Rhyme
Rhyme is a pattern of words that contain
similar sounds

Rhythm
Pattern of beats or a series of stressed and
unstressed syllables in poem.
Poets create rhythm by using words in which
parts are emphasized or not emphasized.

what is stressed

Structure of Poetry
Line Break

A line break is where a line of poetry ends.


It causes the reader to pause and will determine
how the poem is read.

Repetition
Repetition occurs when poets repeat
words, phrases, or lines in a poem.

It creates a pattern
It increases rhythm
It strengthens feelings, ideas and
mood in a poem

Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of the first
consonant sound in words as in the nursery
rhyme: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled
peppers.

Onomatopoeia
They are words that represent the actual
sound of something. Examples are:
The dog barks
The cat purrs
Thunder booms
Rain drips
Clock ticks

There are many types of Poetry; some
are:

Acrostic
Shape
Couplet
Haiku
Cinquain
Diamante
Humorous
Narrative
Lyric
Free Verse

Acrostic Poetry

Shape Poetry
A Shape Poem is a type of poetry that describes an
object and is shaped the same as the object the poem
is describing.

Figurative Language

Figurative
Language
Figurative Language is the use
of words outside of their
literal or usual meaning to
add beauty or force.

It is characterized by the use of


similes and metaphors.

Figurative Language
Simile:
A direct, explicit comparison of one thing to
another in which the words like or as are used

Example:
She looks like an angel.
Her lips are as sweet as honey

Personification:
The strategy of giving animate qualities to abstract
concepts, or inanimate things.

This handless clock stares blindly from its tower.

Onomatopoeia:

The attempt to echo or imitate sounds with words.

Example:

Bow-wow, oink-oink, tic-tac, howling
