Technical white paper | Implementing HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and ProLiant DL380 Gen8 with Microsoft Exchange 2010

Executive summary
Microsoft Exchange Server is the keystone for the majority of all business communication and collaboration, and the
principal repository for business critical information in most business organizations. Storage has always been a principal
consideration for the operational performance, and capabilities of an Exchange messaging system infrastructure. With
Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft has integrated many new enhancements to these new e-mail messaging systems that
have influenced the way the organizations plan and utilize storage. Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 delivers an estimated
70 percent reduction in disk I/O requirements, in comparison with previous versions, which translates to a significant
reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) to customers.
Many organizations today realize the important role that electronic messaging plays in their business environment and seek
to take advantage of the benefits associated with using Exchange Server 2010 as a collaboration tool and a storage
warehouse for business information. Many of todays businesses are implementing Exchange 2010 messaging solutions
that facilitate a larger number of individual mailboxes, capable of holding several gigabytes of data. Exchange 2010 offers
added features such as data archival, date retention policies, journaling and legal hold that assist in the management of the
content of these much larger mailboxes.
The increased emphasis placed on Exchange 2010 as a principal depository for business critical information also increases
the need for the highest level of availability and data protection of the Exchange databases. Microsoft Exchange 2010 offers
an unprecedented level of high availability and fault tolerance with the introduction of Database Availability Groups (DAG). A
DAG offers the ability to maintain multiple database copies in an up-to-date and consistent state. In the event that the
Exchange Servers primary database copy goes offline manually or due to hardware failure an up-to-date database copy is
mounted and brought online automatically without administrator intervention. The ability for Exchange 2010 to maintain
multiple highly available database copies is based on enhancements made to Exchange Continuous Replication that was
introduced in Exchange Server 2007.
The successful deployment of Exchange Server 2010 requires careful planning considerations for selecting the appropriate
storage solution that will meet the needs of the organization.
This document will illustrate the combination of Hewlett Packards line of ProLiant Gen8 rack mount servers and HP
StoreServ 7200 storage, and how these configurations can be used to optimize and deploy Microsoft Exchange 2010 to
meet todays vital business messaging objectives. This document will help HP customers conceptualize the flexibility of the
HP StoreServ storage array to adapt to todays SAN technologies (Fibre Channel, iSCSI and FCoE). This document will also
highlight the superior power and performances integrated into HPs line of ProLiant Gen8 rack servers and identify the many
features and enhancements that make them ideal Exchange 2010 platforms. This document will also identify an
assortment of planning tools and resources available to HP customers to construct ideal solutions that are well suited and
adaptable to their particular operational IT environments.
Target audience: The intent of this white paper is to inform IT decision makers, storage administrator and Exchange
architects involved in the planning and deployment of Microsoft Exchange 2010 using the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 (7200)
storage systems and ProLiant Gen8 servers.

Business need
E-mail continues to be a mission critical application with Microsoft Exchange controlling the majority of the market. The
failure of this important communications tool would be a significant issue for most businesses. As a result, e-mail system
resiliency is of upmost importance. Users are also demanding larger mailboxes, which require not only more storage, but
also the ability to quickly and easily provision storage when and where it is needed. To ensure high availability, adequate
storage capacity and performance, while still managing costs within a high growth environment is a significant challenge, to
say the least. This paper introduces the configuration of Exchange 2010, using the HP StoreServ 7000 product line, as an
optimal platform for addressing these respective requirements.

Solution design
The example configurations and designs presented within this document support an Exchange 2010 messaging
environment of 2,500 users with a mailbox size of 2 GB and a heavy workload profile of 200 messages sent and received
per day per user. Some design alternatives and options will be discussed to enlighten HP customers of flexibility to leverage
all of the technologies and capabilities associated with HP ProLiant server and HP Storage products. The HP server and
storage hardware configuration specified, and the Exchange 2010 Organizational design in these example configurations
result from calculations from the HP Sizer for Exchange 2010 (for more detailed information please see
hp.com/solutions/microsoft/exchange2010/sizer). To view the detailed results for the HP Sizer used to support this
configuration, please see Appendix B: HP Sizer for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. The following criteria serve as the bases

Technical white paper | Implementing HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and ProLiant DL380 Gen8 with Microsoft Exchange 2010

for the formulation and development of this design solution. Many of these parameters derive from HPs Exchange best
practice knowledge base.
Single Database Availability Group, hosting two database copies
Exchange Servers are configured with Exchange mailbox (MBX), client access (CAS) and hub transport (HT) roles
Each user has a send/receive profile of 200 messages per day, with an IOPS requirement of 0.24 IOPS, which includes a

20% safety factor

Each Exchange Server has allocated adequate storage to accommodate a recovery database
Each mailbox database and logs are hosted on a RAID1 pair of midline (MDL) SAS disks
For fault tolerance and load balancing for the CAS role, a separate software or hardware load balancer must be used

This solution will not address the configuration of any 3PAR storage enhancement features such as Adaptive Optimization
(AO) or Thin Provisioning.

Each HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 base configuration includes two controller nodes (Node 0 Bottom, Node 1 Top), 24 GB of

cache, 24 x small form factor drive bays, 4 x built-in 8 Gb/sec FC ports, 4 x 8Gb shortwave FC SFP, 2 x PCIe adapter slots
for host adapter cards one slot per node, 4 x 2m SAS cables, 1 x mounting rail kit, and power cords
The 3PAR StoreServ 7200 base enclosure (2U24) holds up to 24 x 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) SAS disk drives

arranged vertically in a single row at the front of the enclosure

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage capabilities may be expanded by the procurement of additional drive enclosures.

The 3PAR StoreServ 7200 is capable of supporting up to five added drive enclosures. The 3PAR StoreServ 7200 is
compatible with the following two drive enclosure models:
Figure 4. HP M6710 2.5 inch 2U SAS Drive Enclosure (QR490A)

Figure 5. HP M6720 3.5 inch 4U SAS Drive Enclosure (QR491A)

Drive
Shelf
M6720

Each drive enclosure includes 24 drive bays, 2 x I/O modules, 2 x1m SAS cables, 1 x mounting rail kit, and power
cables.
There is a maximum of five drive enclosures that can be attached to the 3PAR StoreServ 7200; mixed enclosure
combinations are supported
Drive enclosures are connected in daisy chains from the SAS ports of the controller nodes.
The best practice is to balance the drive enclosures across the SAS ports, remembering that the controller node
enclosures include 24 drives attached to the SAS port labeled DP-1.
The best practice, when including LFF and SFF drive enclosures in the same array, is to arrange them in the rack so that
all of the 2U enclosures that belong to one node pair are together and all of the 4U enclosures for that node pair are
together. When connecting the backend SAS cables, intermix the M6710 and M6720 enclosures on each SAS port.
With a four-node configuration, the best practice is to attach the same number of drive enclosures to each node pair.
To preserve proper airflow, all empty drive bays should contain a drive blank.

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 cabling

Proper cabling of the HP StoreServ 7200 (Figure 6) may seem complicated and confusing to technicians during the system
setup and configuration phase of the system deployment. It is vitally important that customers consult the proper HP
StoreServ 7200 cabling guide that appropriately addresses the model of StoreServ storage array and the number and
models of disk enclosures to be connected to the 3PAR StoreServ 7200. The system cabling will vary dependent on the type
and the combination of disk enclosures.
Figure 6. HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 Mixed Drive Enclosure Cabling

Three different 3PAR StoreServ 7200 cabling and configuration guides are available to support the following three possible
combinations of drive enclosure options:
Small Form-Factor M6710 2U SAS Drive Enclosure (QR490A) this configuration guide addresses the cabling of the 3PAR

StoreServ 7200 configured with only the M6710 SFF type of SAS drive enclosures.
Large Form-Factor M6720 4U SAS Drive Enclosure (QR491A) this configuration guide addresses the cabling of the 3PAR

StoreServ 7200 configured with only the M6720 LFF 4U type of SAS drive enclosures.
Mixed Form Factor cable configurations this configuration guide addresses the cabling of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200

configured with a combination of the M6720 LFF 4U type of SAS drive enclosures and the M6710 SFF 2U type of SAS drive
enclosures.
The cabling diagram in Figure 6 is an example of a mixed form factor cabling configuration of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200
attaching 2 x M6710 2U SAS Drive Enclosures and 2 x M6720 4U SAS Drive Enclosures. To the experienced storage
administrator, at first glance the system cabling may seem peculiar. However, these peculiarities associated with the drive
enclosure cabling are inherent from the unique design layout of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 I/O components. The orientation
of the 2 controller nodes in the StoreServ 7200 base enclosure along with the orientation of the 2 disk I/O modules in the
drive enclosure are the contributing factors for these abnormalities. The two controller nodes in the HP 3PAR StoreServ
7200 2-node Storage Base enclosure are identical. However, the controller Node 0 (bottom) is oriented upside down and in
the opposing direction of the controller Node 1(top) which is orientated up. The HP M6710 2U SAS Drive Enclosure contains
two I/O modules, and they are orientated also in opposing directions similar to the orientation of the two controller nodes of
the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 2-node Storage Base enclosure. However, the orientation of the two I/O modules installed in
the M6720 4U SAS Drive Enclosure is completely different, and both I/O modules are oriented in the same direction (UP). To
accommodate for the difference in the layout of I/O modules in these components it is necessary to take additional
considerations when cabling.

HP ProLiant Intelligent Provisioning
With the introduction of the HP ProLiant Gen8 server line, HP has made some significant changes in the tools provided to
configure system resources, install the operating system, and get the system into productivity. HP Intelligent Provisioning is
replacing the HP ProLiant SmartStart setup CDs that are commonly used in all previous generations of ProLiant servers. HP
ProLiant Gen8 and later rack and blade servers will now come equipped with an integrated pre-loaded flash chip that
contains the required setup and installation media. The setup and installation media are accessible during the servers Power
on Self-Test (POST) by pressing the F10 option for Intelligent Provisioning when prompted. The server will then boot from
the media on the preloaded flash chip. Intelligent Provisioning provides similar functionality as SmartStart, but has some
significant enhancements that SmartStart did not have such as:
Ability to update your drivers and systems software by connecting directly to HP.com and perform firmware updates and

install an OS in the same step

Provision a server remotely using HP iLO 4
Remote Support registration
Revised and simplified user interface (UI) with the following capabilities:

A new "Recommended Install" option for simple fast installations. This express installation process has preset defaults
and will perform a software and firmware update if the network is available at your location. (Recommend that you use
the HP suggested defaults.)
The "Customized Install" (often called Guided or Assisted install) has been simplified, updated, and refreshed. This is a
full from start to finish installation wizard used for deploying HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. It provides the network setup,
remote support registration, the systems software, driver and firmware update, the server hardware configuration,
RAID configuration, and OS installation.

This interview process is also much faster than in the past and includes software driver and firmware updates as part
of the interview process.
A much-simplified "Manual Install" is provided that automates finding your drivers without you searching the web
Before deploying an HP ProLiant server using HP Intelligent Provisioning, it is advisable to ensure that the latest HP
Intelligent Provisioning image is installed on the server. Downloading and installing the latest HP Intelligent Provisioning
image will ensure that during the system setup and configuration process, all up-to-date operating systems are selectable
as installation options and the latest device drivers are applied. For example to install Widows Server 2012 onto a ProLiant
Gen8 server, will require an HP Intelligent Provisioning 1.30 (or later) update.
To update HP Intelligent Provisioning, download the newest Intelligent Provisioning ISO image from the HP Intelligent
Provisioning website http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/intelligentprovisioning/index.html. This
Intelligent Provisioning ISO is a bootable image that can be mounted and booted by using iLO, USB or DVD/CD media. After
the system has booted from this image, follow prompted instructions, and the built-in Intelligent Provisioning flash chip will
be overwritten to the newest version of HP Intelligent Provisioning. After the update completes simply reboot the system
and access Intelligent Provisioning by pressing F10, for more detailed information regarding HP Intelligent Provisioning,
please see the HP Intelligent Provisioning library

HP storage networking components

This section will identify and describe the capabilities of the HP networking products featured in the examples of this
document. The following products were chosen to serve as an example and are not necessarily the only products that are
available from HP to satisfy the customers requirement.
HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch with 2 Slots (JC106A)
The HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch with 2 Slots is a top of rack switch offering a great amount of flexibility and a variety of
opportunities to both Ethernet and SAN networks that can be incorporated with the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage array.
The 5820 switches provide the ability to consolidate Ethernet, iSCSI and FCoE functionality into a single switch and offer
customers the ability to integrate HP Converged Infrastructure design. It is important to note that the 3PAR StoreServ 7000
storage arrays do not support FCoE protocol as an end-to-end storage to server capability. However, with HP Converged
Infrastructure Architecture (CI) customers can take advantage of the capabilities that will unify network services and reduce
the amount of needed hardware. HP Converged Infrastructure design merges all server, storage, and network resources
together into pools of resources. For the HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch to offer FCoE functionality the addition of 2 HP 5820
4-port 8/4/2 Gbps FCoE SFP+ Modules, are required. The following are the additional networking features integrated in the
HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ 2-slot switch:
14 SFP+ 10-GbE ports
Duplex: full only
2 extended module slots
1 open module slot
4 RJ-45 auto-negotiating 10/100/1000 ports (IEEE 802.3 Type 10Base-T IEEE 802.3u Type 100Base-TX, IEEE 802.3ab

Type 1000Base-T)
1 RJ-45 serial console port
Supports a maximum of 14 SFP+ ports plus 8 8/4/2 Gb/s Fibre Channel SFP+ ports, with optional module

The HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch serves as an FCoE bridge and must be connected directly to a Fibre Channel switch for TCP
and FC functionality.
The HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch is compatible with the HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554-SFP+ Adapter and the HP CN1100E
Dual Port Converged Network Adapter shown in the configurations, in this document.
HP 2408 FCoE Converged Network Switch (AP801B)
The HP 2408 FCoE Converged Network Switch provides abilities that consolidate SAN and LAN Ethernet port functionality
and is compatible with the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage array to enhance Ethernet, iSCSI and FCoE functionality. Unlike the
HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch, which functions as a Fibre Channel and Ethernet bridge, the HP 2408 FCoE Converged Network
Switch provides FCoE translation built into the hardware. The 2408 FCoE switch offers 8 Fibre Channel universal, selfconfiguring (E, F, M and FL) ports and auto-sensing 1, 2, 4, or 8Gb speed capability. The HP 2408 FCoE also features 24
Ethernet 10 Gb ports supporting Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), which increase the reliability, efficiency, and scalability
of Ethernet networks. These features allow support of multiple traffic classes over lossless Ethernet fabric, thus enabling
consolidation of LAN, SAN, and cluster environments

HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554-SFP+ Adapter (629142-B21)

HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554-SFP+ Adapter is a FlexibleLOM type adapter that has been thoroughly tested with HP
ProLiant servers and HP Top of Rack (ToR) switches to ensure an optimal HP FCoE solution for data centers. This is an ideal
adapter for HP customers that are interested in the benefits associate with Converged Enhanced Ethernet features as with
the HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch. The HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLR-SFP+ Adapter provides Ethernet and iSCSI or Fibre
Channel Over Ethernet (FCoE) connectivity using Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) standards. The 554FLR-SFP+
FlexibleLOM provides high performance 10GbE connectivity with the capability to support FCoE or iSCSI with full protocol
offload for HP Gen8 rack servers. By consolidating Ethernet, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel onto a FlexibleLOM network adapter,
the HP 554FLR-SFP+ reduces the number of separate adapters and cables required for data centers and also reduces
operational, power and cooling costs while preserving existing Ethernet and Fibre Channel infrastructure.
HP Dual Port Converged Network Adapters (CNAs)
The following are compatible dual port CNA adapters that provide consolidated Ethernet, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel (FC)
functionality over 10GbE that adhere to both Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE)
standards. By consolidating Ethernet, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel onto a converged network adapter, HP CNAs reduce the

Windows Server 2008 R2

The foundation for this configuration assessment is based on Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP2, and Windows Server
2008 R2, because at the time of this assessment Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP2 was not supported on Windows Server
2012 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 RTM had not yet been released. Microsoft has officially released advance
information regarding the planned contents of the upcoming Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 release. Some of the
most significant features and fixes included in Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 will include the following
Coexistence with Exchange 2013, with implementation of Exchange Server 2010 SP3 it will then be possible to add

Exchange 2013 servers into an Exchange 2010 infrastructure and facilitate a migration path to Exchange 2013.
Support for running Exchange Server 2010 on Windows Server 2012 will be possible after the implementation of Service

Pack 3.
Based on these extenuating circumstances, the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system and Exchange Server 2010 were
selected for these configuration examples. HP customers who have intentions to migrate to or coexist with Exchange 2013
and Windows Server 2012 will also find these configurations helpful. Those customers intending to coexist or migrate to
Exchange 2013 should consider waiting to implement Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 before deploying Exchange Server
2013.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard vs. Enterprise
The major consideration for which edition of Windows 2008 R2 is needed for an Exchange Server 2010 installation,
Enterprise or Standard, is based on the requirement for high availability and Database Availability Groups (DAG). The
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition is required if Exchange high availability options are desired because Windows
Clustering services is required to establish a DAG.

Multipath Management options

The proper configuration of the 3PAR StoreServ Storage will require the installation of Multipath I/O (MPIO) software due to
the redundant storage paths between the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 and the HBA/CNA connections to the host server. The HP
3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage array supports two MPIO software versions for use with the Windows Server 2008 R2
operating system. Supported are Microsofts Multipath I/O (MPIO) available as an optional feature included with the Windows
Server 2008 operating system, which is the popular and economic option, and Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP).
Windows Server 2008 R2 prerequisites
After installing the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system and before the server can accommodate the installation of
Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 additional features will need to be added to the operating system and some software
components may also need to be added. The features and software that will need to be added to the server will vary
dependent on the Exchange Server 2010 roles to be deployed on the server.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354%28EXCHG.141%29.aspx
Pre Exchange 2010 installation checks
Before the installation of Exchange Server 2010, it is recommended to conduct a pre-installation check of the following
Windows services to preclude any errors or misconfigurations during the installation:
Active Directory Health Check
DNS server configuration
AD replication http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124397(v=exchg.141).aspx

Exchange Server 2010 SP2

HP customers are encouraged to become well versed and familiar with the Microsoft TechNet Exchange Server 2010 User
Guide for detailed information for the planning, installation and deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server 2010
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124558(v=exchg.141).aspx or other appropriate Microsoft Exchange 2010
publications. This document will not address detailed, site-specific installation procedures for Exchange Server 2010. The
number of possibilities and installation considerations to address each customers unique IT environment would be
impossible. The following are considerations for storage planning and design for the Exchange 2010 Mailbox server role,
designed on the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage array as the principal storage solution. This information is intended to
serve as a recommendation guide, regarding how to configure the HP 3PAR StoreServ to optimize Exchange Server 2010
capabilities.
The first steps customers should take for the planning and designing their Exchange 2010 infrastructure involves

defining clear and concise requirements of the messaging system. Accomplishing this task will require the assessment of
the desired solution storage criteria and added features and capabilities. Table 3 identifies some major architectural
design considerations and the impact on the Exchange storage design.
Table 3. Exchange 2010 Storage Architecture Design Criteria
Design Criteria

More mailboxes require additional capacity and
impacts the number and size of databases hosted
on each server
Increases needs for high availability

Mailbox
Concurrency

The largest percentage of users that is

anticipated to connect to the mailbox server at
one time.

The higher the concurrency the higher the message

delivery workload, and log and database I/O
Sizing should be calculated based on 100 percent
concurrency
Higher concurrency generates more log files.

Mailbox size

The maximum mailbox quota per mailbox,

which includes capacity needed for primary

Design Criteria

Description

Design Impacts

Mailbox usage
profile

The usage characteristics of users on the

Mailbox servers, generally defined as messages
sent and received per day per user and average
message size in kilobytes (KB).

A more aggressive mailbox user profile will generate

additional log files per server per day.

E-mail client types

The types and percentages of different e-mail

clients, for example, Outlook 2003 Cached
Exchange Mode, Windows Mobile, Microsoft
Exchange ActiveSync, and Microsoft Office
Outlook Web App.

Different clients exhibit different performance

characteristics on the server.

E-mail client
extensions

Microsoft and third-party applications that

extend the functionality of the e-mail client, for
example, Microsoft Lync and Windows Desktop
Search clients

E-mail client extension applications can have a light

to very heavy I/O impact on the Mailbox server
database I/O.

Server applications

Applications that either run on or against

Exchange Mailbox servers, third-party mobile
device applications and antivirus applications.

Server applications can have a light to very heavy I/O

impact on Mailbox server database I/O

High availability

Whether Exchange 2010 high availability is used

and how it's configured, for example, number of
copies, number of sites, and lagged copies

A high availability solution will require slightly more

amount of disk I/O, then a non-high availability
solution, to handle the additional log volume I/O,
produced by log replication.
Using high availability increases the amount of
database file storage required
If circular logging is used, log capacity may be
reduced. Using high availability equals more logs
generated per server per day

Design the storage architecture that will meet the storage requirements. After collecting and analyzing the storage

requirements, will be the time to begin the design of the storage architecture that will satisfy all the system
requirements. This stage of planning and design requires an intensive amount of calculating and product research. The
HP Sizer for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 can contribute greatly by reducing the complexity and automating the
majority of work associated with this task.
Before adopting the planned design of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 storage solution into the production Exchange

environment, it is important that the capabilities of the storage solution be validated, in a lab environment, to ensure the
solution can meet the design specifications. The following are a few recommended considerations for a successful test
environment
Define test goals and establish the success criteria needed to achieve adequate performance, throughput and
capacities
Model the test environment as close as possible to the production environment. Test with the same number of servers
as the production environment including non-Exchange servers and workloads.
Test with the same estimated workloads as the production environment. Test the Exchange databases and the
physical disk at the same size and capacities as for the planned production level. Additionally, when implementing high
availability options such a DAG, assess the storage configuration in an anticipated worst-case storage failure
simulation to validate that the mailbox servers can maintain business operations and identify the level of degradation
of system performance to anticipate in the event of real world disaster.
Insure that the storage can meet transactional I/O requirements, and determine the maximum performance of the
solution within acceptable latencies
Estimate the I/O capabilities of the storage solution. Determine the rate and throughput of the organizational backup
and restore solution. Verify that recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO) specified in the
backup and restore service level agreement (SLA) can be achieved.
The following are two commonly used and recommended Exchange testing tools available from Microsoft for the

evaluation of Exchange Server performance under simulated production environment workloads.

Microsoft Exchange Server Jetstress 2010, is a utility that is used to verify that the Exchange 2010 storage device
performance and stability are capable of sustaining the disk I/O workloads that are required to support the production

Microsoft Exchange Load Generator (LoadGen) 2010 is a simulation tool that tests how an Exchange Server will
respond to Exchange workloads intended to be equivalent to the production Exchange environment. This test can help
to determine if each Exchange Server can meet anticipated production workloads
microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20322
The following are tools available to assist administrators to optimize Exchange 2010 configurations to meet Microsofts

comprehensive listing of best practices recommendations and aid in the diagnostics of Exchange:
Exchange Best Practices Analyzer Tool (ExBPA), This tool scans an Exchange organization and identifies items that do
not conform to Microsoft best practices microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24082
Performance Monitor, a powerful performance visualization tool for examining performance data
Performance Troubleshooter, checks for issues that are impeding a computer's performance
Database Availability Groups (DAG). The Exchange 2010 organizational design in the examples found in this document

incorporates Exchange 2010 high availability features supporting one Database Availability Group (DAG) (Figure 7). The
DAG designed in these examples consists of eight total database copies (4 active and 4 passive). The database members
of the DAG are evenly distributed between two Exchange 2010 multirole servers (MB, HT, CAS). Each Exchange server
hosts two of the four active databases copies. These Exchange servers are also mutually supporting and fault tolerant by
also hosting the passive database copies that serve as a synchronized backup for the active database copies hosted on
the other Exchange server. This simple Exchange 2010 DAG design offers the ability to establish mailbox server role high
availability and fault tolerance utilizing the minimal number of server resources. This DAG design would provision for the
loss of one of the Exchange servers and would still sustain Exchange messaging capabilities for the organization.
A DAG implementation is dependent upon Microsofts Windows Server Failover Clustering service to operate properly. The
ability to use failover clustering on an Exchange 2010 server running all the necessary Exchange server roles needed for
functionality is another critical aspect in this design. This ability to cluster multiple roles was not possible with Exchange
Server 2007. For proper functionality of the Microsoft Failover Clustering service and reliable DAG protection requires
proper configuration of the quorum cluster resource. The two Exchange Servers in this design are configured in the File
Share Majority quorum mode that employs a file share witness server to eliminate the possibility of a split-brain scenario.
One drawback of this design that customers need to be aware of is considerations for true high availability and load
balancing of the CAS Array. The ability to use Microsoft Network Load Balancing (NLB) as a convenient and economical
method to establish network load balancing for the CAS Array is not a possibility in this design. Microsoft Network Load
Balancing and Microsoft Failover Cluster are not compatible and cannot be installed on the same server. Customers
should consider other software or hardware network load balancing solutions. This design provides the ability to recover
from hardware failures automatically, quickly and easily; however, there is a limitation in this DAG design: the ability to
conduct a point-in-time recovery in the unlikelihood of Exchange database corruption. Customers who would like the
added protection and the ability to conduct a point-in-time recovery should consider adding a lagged database copy to
the DAG. The follow is a list of the considerations customers should evaluate for planning and designing a DAG to meet
their organizational requirement.
Is a high availability DAG a requirement?
Level of HA, what number of database copies (Active/Passive/lagged)?
Does the Exchange design architecture require site resilience?
Number of Exchange servers?
What storage resources are available
How will you distribute database copies?
What are the backup requirements?
What storage architecture will you use

Example reference configurations

This section will illustrate a number of server and storage configurations of the HP StoreServ 7200 and the HP ProLiant
DL380 Gen8 server. These configurations are intended to illustrate how these components can be adapted to construct a
SAN infrastructure incorporating Fibre Channel, iSCSI and FCoE technologies. This section will also identify some of the
characteristics and benefits behind these methodologies. These reference configurations are intended to aid HP customers
to identify how this HP server and storage solution may be adapted into their own individual Exchange 2010 messaging
environments. The following reference configurations are basic in design and not intended as a tailored solution for every
customer environment. The reader should look to the following configurations and references for conceptual designs and
functionality.

Storage networking technologies

Fibre Channel (FC)
Fibre Channel is a high-speed network technology primarily seen in storage networks, currently FC devices can achieve
speeds up to 16Gbs. FC SANs are widely used and popular for the high-speed storage access capabilities, flexibility and the
ability to span long distances. The implementation of FC requires procurement of FC network devices used to establish a
dedication communication path between application servers and FC based shared storage devices. The segregation of FC
from Ethernet traffic offers some desirable benefits; such as the accommodation of more efficient bandwidth utilization on
the production public Ethernet network and resolves some administrative problems such as backups and disaster recover.
FC is designed to operate with point-to-point, switched and loop interface configurations. FC is a standardized protocol and
specifies the signaling and physical compliance regulations that insure interoperability between hardware and software
venders. To learn more about Fibre Channel Technology and HPs implementation of Fibre Channel, please see the HP SAN
Design Reference Guide.

Direct Attached Fibre Channel

The storage configuration show in Figure 8 is a Direct Attached Fibre Channel configuration that connects each of the HP
ProLiant DL380 Gen8 Exchange servers directly to the FC ports in both controller nodes of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 Array.
In this configuration, each Exchange Server Host is equipped with a single HP 82q PCI-e Dual Port 8Gbs FC HBA (AJ764A). To
accommodate for some fault tolerance each of the two ports on the HBA is cabled directly to one of the two available FC
ports on Controller Node 0 and Controller Node 1. The controller nodes in both StoreServ 7200 models (Model QR482A (FC)
and Model QR483A (10Gb Eth)) are equipped with two 8Gbs FC ports as standard features. A 3PAR 7200 Model QR482A that
is equipped with two optional HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 4-port 8Gb/Sec Fibre Channel Adapters (QR486A) can provide
additional alternatives to this configuration.

Fibre Channel Dual Fabric Multipathing

The storage configuration shown in Figure 9 is a dual fabric SAN configuration that is designed to provide fault tolerance and
dynamic routing capabilities to the 3PAR StoreServ storage array. This solution incorporates two HP SN6000 8Gbs FC
Switches. The dual port HP 82q PCI-e Dual Port 8Gbs FC HBA (AJ764A) in each Exchange server is connected to one of the
8Gbs FC ports in each of the SN6000 8Gbs FC Switches. Each of the two FC Ports in each controller node in the 3PAR
StoreServ 7200 Array is connected to a host 8Gbs FC in each switch. This configuration accommodates two independent FC
fabrics (Red, Blue) that facilitate multipath fault tolerance. The controller nodes in both StoreServ 7200 models (Model
QR482A (FC) and Model QR483A (10Gb Eth)) are equipped with two 8Gbs FC ports as standard features. A 3PAR 7200 Model
QR482A that is equipped with two optional HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 4-port 8 Gb/Sec Fibre Channel Adapters (QR486A) can
provide additional alternatives to this configuration. High availability can be improved by adding an additional HBA to each
Exchange server.

The recommended best practices for zoning the HP 3PAR StoreServ are WWN single initiator/single target zoning. This
method for zoning requires the creation of a large number of zones. A single zone is required for each individual initiator
port (HBA Port) and a single target WWN port (Storage Host Port). Each zone is unique and contains only one initiator and
one target port. In this example Fibre Channel configuration, each ProLiant DL380 Gen8 server has a single dual port 8 Gb
HBA (HBA-P1, HBA-P2) and the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 has a total of four target host ports (TP1, TP2 (Node 0), TP3, TP4
(Node 1)). The configuration will require the creation of the following eight zones (four zones per server).
Table 4. Zoning Example
Exchange Server 1

Exchange Server 2

Zone A1, (HBA-P1 TP1)

Zone B1, (HBA-P1 TP1)

Zone A2, (HBA-P1 TP3)

Zone B2, (HBA-P1 TP3)

Zone A3, (HBA-P2 TP2)

Zone B3, (HBA-P2 TP2)

Zone A4, (HBA-P2 TP4)

Zone B4, (HBA-P2 TP4)

This method of zoning offers the following advantages over the method of creating one or several larger zones addressing
all SAN devices on the fabric.
Registered State Change Notifications (RSCN) is a Fibre Channel command, which is a disruptive event that is sent on

fabric when changes occur. These changes can be a new HBA logging in to the fabric, a device removed from the fabric, or
other scenarios. RSCNs are disruptive and can interrupt the transmission I/O. Single initiator/single target zoning
minimizes and isolates disruptions associated with RSCN.
Single initiator/single target zoning offers better security by preventing devices from communicating and possibly

compromising other devices on the fabric. This can help prevent DOS attacks by tightly controlling communication.
iSCSI storage networks
Some customers may consider FC SANs to provide the highest possible performance; however, Fibre Channel SANs typically
transmit data at rates of 4Gbps, 8Gbps and currently available at 16Gbps. Presently iSCSI SANs running on Ethernet are
reaching speeds of 10Gbps and have the perspective of reaching 40Gbps and 100Gbps in the near feature. The majority of
servers purchased today are equipped with numerous NICs and do not require specialized cabling and connect servers
through layer 2 Ethernet directly. Additionally, many NICs manufactured today offer features like TCP Offload Engine (TOE)
intended to improve iSCSI functionality. iSCSI solutions are more cost effective than those based on Fibre Channel requiring
higher cost switches, network interface cards and proprietary software. Ethernet is an easy, convenient and rapid network
with a low latency.
Microsoft provides an iSCSI software based Initiator included with their Windows operating system capable of connecting the
host to network storage. It is extremely useful to deploy affordable and easily manageable SANs without additional
hardware, using only your existing IP network infrastructure.

The Ethernet network configurations shown in Figure 10 depict a configuration design for a fault tolerant iSCSI SAN. This
solution takes advantage of the TCP/IP offload capabilities, the integrated hardware iSCSI initiator port, and management
features located on the HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554-SFP+ Adapter. The iSCSI initiator and target initiator configurations
are performed on the adapter with the HP OneCommand Fibre Channel and Converged Network Adapter Configuration
utility. The FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554-SFP+ Adapter has 2 physical Ethernet RJ45 ports; however, each physical port has a
10Gb Ethernet NIC and a 10Gb iSCSI/FCoE NIC offering 4 10Gb connections (Figure 10).

Fibre Channel over Ethernet

HP customers who have already made some investments into FC storage and would like to reduce the associated costs of
FC and take advantage of the increasing advancements in Ethernet may find FCoE as a viable option. Fibre Channel over
Ethernet is a protocol in which Fibre Channel frames can be sent over Ethernet networks. This allows Fibre Channel to use
10GbE networks while preserving the Fibre Channel protocol.
The convergence of Ethernet and FC provides the same level of connectivity as each individual technology provides
separately, but offers:
50% reduction in the number of switches in each server rack Only two converged network ToR switches, compared with

four switches per rack with separate Ethernet and FC switches (two networks and two FC)
50% reduction in the number of adapters per server
75% fewer cable connections

An HP implementation of FCoE network support is achieved through the following product set:
HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch functions as a bridge between FC and Ethernet networks, and is the communication pathway

between Ethernet and FC fabrics.

HP B-series and C-series CN switches Provide a bridging function from converged network to separate Ethernet and FC

fabrics, or support end-to-end FCoE when used with CNAs and FCoE storage targets.
HP CN1000E, CN1100E, and CN1000Q CNAs converge Ethernet and FC technologies in the server over 10GbE links to

converged network switches.

HP P9500 with FCoE and P63xx/P65xx EVA storage with iSCSI/FCoE provide native FCoE target connectivity within the

storage system.
HP MPX200 Multifunction Router iSCSI/FCoE, provides FCoE target functionality when integrated with P6000/EVA or 3PAR

StoreServ Fibre Channel storage systems (for additional information, please see the HP MPX200 Multifunction Router
User Guide).

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 Storage Array does not support FCoE as a point-to-point, server to storage solution at this
time. However, there are plans for incorporating FCoE capabilities in the future. The integrated Fibre Channel ports on each
of the StoreServ 7200 controller nodes offers the ability for the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 to be implemented in an FCoE
topology with HP FCoE networking solutions. In Figure 12, the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 is depicted connected to two HP 2408
FCoE Switches with the FC ports on each controller node. The 2408 FCoE offers 24 10Gb Ethernet ports and 8, 8 Gb Fibre
Channel ports. In this example configuration, the Exchange servers are incorporating a single HP CN1000E PCI-e CNA to
establish FCoE connectivity. In this FCoE solution, the translation between Ethernet and FC data is completed in the 2408
FCoE Switch. An alternative configuration could use the HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch; however, this solution would also
require the addition of an FC switch because the HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ Switch functions as an FCoE bridge.
Figure 12. FCoE Network Configuration

Summary
The information discussed in this reference configuration highlights the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 Storage array and the HP
ProLiant DL380 Gen8 Server and demonstrates how this server and storage combination can be implemented as an ideal
Exchange 2010 solution that meets challenges of HP SMB customers. This information also provides insight into how the
features and options of the 3PAR StoreServ 7200 offer the flexibility to be integrated into multiple and the combination of
different SAN topologies. The 3PAR StoreServ 7200 offers customers the ability to take advantage of the benefits of Fibre
Channel, iSCSI and FCoE technologies that offer the ability to reduce the associated operational cost. Additionally, with the
adaptation of HPs Converged Network infrastructure design product line, adds even more flexibility to the HP 3PAR
StoreServ 7200 to fulfill the challenge of satisfying the storage needs of todays data centers and reduce operational costs.

Implementing a proof-of-concept
As a matter of best practice for all deployments, HP recommends implementing a proof-of-concept using a test
environment that matches as closely as possible the planned production environment. In this way, appropriate performance
and scalability characterizations can be obtained. For help with a proof-of-concept, contact an HP Services representative
