Summary (Welfare and Charity)
Welfare
Welfare means health comfort and freedom from want. The British Welfare State
was planned during the Second World War by William Beveridge. A Welfare state is
just like an immense insurance company with which every citizen is compulsorily
insured. The welfare services in Britain provide allowances and pensions. It also
gives advice to people about lifes affairs such as; marriage, child care, careers and
workers trouble. However some people still object about the welfare state that
makes the government attempts to be better.
The National Health Service (NHS)
NHS provides non-specialist doctors which is paid by the state to serve people other
than wealthy people, they salary depends on the number of patients they have and
the extra works they do, also they are willing to visit their patients with serious
illness. The people paid nothing for all the treatments including the drugs for the
patients who need it as a supply for their life, and for all other drugs there is a fixed
charge but of course cost less than it should be. By the NHS all school children can
examined their teeth for free (theres a charge for adult). The NHS also supplied for
another illness that will need an assist from sort of objects for instance a pair of
glasses. NHS has lacks such as; shortage of beds in hospitals that causes NHS
patients have to wait long time to have an operation and also shortage of nurses.
Wealthy people never run out of a bed in hospital they have pay beds. They go to
private doctors that is specialist doctors which is operating the hospitals but have
duty to look after the NHS patients too for free, because of the lacks of the NHS
more people are trying to get the private medical insurance.
Housing
The majority of houses and flats are owned by the people who live in them. High
percentage of them live in houses with their own gardens and the rest are rented.
There was a dispute between each party that the other side believes in private
ownership it is to sell houses cheaply and another side disagreed and believes that
policy would leave fewer houses for families who could only afford to pay rent. For
that, finally reached the plan that rented housing should be run more and more by
private organization and non profit socialization. Housing was a serious problem
facing Britain in 1980 because many people still living in old houses with leaky
roofs, damp walls. In 1987 the Conservative government announced plans to
modernize old inner city and it had already begun and so workers houses had been
renovated and new houses were being built. But the houses are become too

expensive for workers with low income. More than thirty new towns in Britain now
and they are well-designed, with gardens, the central square, and cycling areas.

Charities
When Britains welfare services still have some lacks there is where the charities
appear. Charities are private organizations founded to support an immense variety
of causes which get no or not enough support from the state. They are over 60.000
charities some are run by handful of people with less amount collected and the big
ones with many more helpers and million of pounds collected. Anne Blackeney and
her helpers are collecting mostly childrens clothes and money through the events
for helping children in the third world. Her organization called Save the Children
Fund. The doctors and nurses organize a pram race event to help the cancer
research fund at the local hospital. Oxfam provide charities through the Christmas
cards so people can buy those cards plus give charities through it and people are
very enthuse on this. Oxfam also has a shop selling second hand goods which is
given by the public with unpaid volunteers. The Samaritans help people who are
thinking of suicide. The Womens Royal voluntary service visit old people and many
charities to help animals.
