Pneumatic Cylinders

Three Part Lesson Plan

(Cognitive)

Name: John Rendell V. Morales

Date: September 29, 2015
School: University of Southeastern Philippines
Year Level: Third Year
Subject: Pneumatics and Hydraulics
Lesson: Single Acting Cylinders

Objectives:

I.

Discuss the operation of a single acting cylinder.

Appreciate the importance of a single acting cylinder in different
industries.

Introductory Activities
A. Prayer
Lets all stand for our prayer.
B. Greetings
Good Morning class!
C. Attendance
Class mayor, give me the names of those who are absent in a
sheet of paper.
D. Review
In our last meeting, our discussion ended with the pneumatic
cylinder.
E. Drill

What is a pneumatic cylinder?

F. Statement of Lesson and Objectives

Our lesson for today is about Single Acting Cylinders. Before

proceeding with the lesson, here are the objectives:
1. Discuss the operation of the single acting cylinder
2. Appreciate the importance of the single acting cylinder in
different industry.

G. Motivation
Have you seen a jackhammer? Do you know that jackhammers
are tools that uses single acting cylinders?
H. Valuing
Without single acting cylinders, many of the things in different
types of industries will be hard to do. That is why single acting
cylinders are important.
II.

Developmental Activities
A. Definition of Key Terms
i. Single Acting Cylinder - a type of pneumatic cylinder which only
have one inlet/port of air.
B. Presentation
Class this here is a diagram of a single acting cylinder.

As you can see in the diagram, the single acting cylinder has

only one port of air.

When compressed air passes through the port, it will cause the
piston to move and it will extend.

C. Practice/ Application

Class, when compressed air passes through the port, the piston
will extend. How do you think the piston will retract back to its
original position?

D. Generalization/Recapitulization
Single acting cylinders uses compressed air to make its piston
extend, and uses a mechanical spring for it to retract.
III.

Closing Activities
A. Evaluation
Class, in a sheet of paper, if there is low air pressure flowing
in the cylinder, do you think that the piston will extend? Why or
why not?
B. Feedback
Class, I see that you have done well. Very good!
C. Assignment
For your assignment, to be written in a sheet of paper, the
question is: If you dont want your cylinder to retract because of
the force of the spring, how can you make the cylinder extend
even if there is no compressed air that is supplied in the
cylinder? Explain your answer.
D. Dismissal
Goodbye Class!
