Period of employment
During period internship was started on 9th July 2012 and ended on 9th September 2012. Pusaka
Runding Sdn. Bhd was located at Bandar Meru Raya, Ipoh Perak. The company is
responsibilities to the civil & structural engineering consultancy, project management and
engineering feasibility studies.
Week 1
On my first week, I have been introduced to the division of management of company and learn
the software such as AutoCAD and Esteem Structural. Besides that, I was given a job to
complete a report for infrastructure such as earthwork, road and drainage for the sport complex at
Bagan Serai, Perak.During this week, I also learned to prepare a report for infrastructure such as
rising main, suction tank, pump house, pumping main, reservoir and falling main for supply
water project at Lenggong, Perak. Another project had exposed me in calculation for earthwork
by manually such as cut and fill at Kg. Tersusun Chepor Indah.

Week 2
The second week I had learned to use AutoCAD to estimate longitudinal section pipes, locat SBend and end cap for project water supply at Lenggong, Perak (Kg. Beng, Kg. Chepor, Kg. Luat,
Kg. Talong, Kg. Pulau Cherry and Kg. Bukit Sapi). On the hand, I was calculated by manually
and compare by esteem structural for refuse chamber design at Sg. Pinang.

Week 3
Another project to build two block apartment at Sg. Pinang, Pasir Bogak and Teluk Baru that
located at Pulau Pangkor, that exposed to design by esteem structural and place the beam, slab
and roof beam into the block layout. This project has contains Block A (28 units apartment and
one hall) and Block B (12 units apartments). Besides that, I learned the process of preparing
tendering document for project at Pulau Pangkor. During that time, I had learned to calculate the
taking off for infrastructure project under Kementerian Sumber Manusia. It is consists a project
at Sg. Wangi Estet (Bilham Division), Sg. Wangi Estet (Wallbrook) and Ladang Gabungan
Pekebun Kecil Kemasik to checking a length of pipes, length of pipe jacking, the quantity of
sluice, scour, end cap, hydrant, pipe marker, S-Bend and others. In the end of the week, I got
assignment to calculate live load and dead load for first beam by manually and do comparison by
Esteem Structural software for project Pembangunan Pekan Kecil Trong, Daerah Larut Matang.

Week 4
Every week I had learnt something new with them to design by using software and manual
design. It is exposed me to learn more detailing about software that used. In Consultant
Company, design checking must be done by well. As example, taking off for infrastructure that
already learnt by week three makes me confident and got experience to do again for project at
Kg. Luat, Kg. Pulau Cherry, Kg. Talong, Jalan Utama, Kg. Bukit Sapi and Kg. Chepor,
Lenggong Perak. Besides that, I learnt to prepare a report for hydraulic calculation for project at
Sg. Wangi Estet (Bilham Division), Sg. Wangi Estet (Wallbrook) and Ladang Gabungan Pekebun

Kecil Kemasik. In this report, the calculation such as water demand is important to design a
suitable size of pipe. By given a chance I had attended together with supervisor for discussion
with officer at Jabatan Galian, Perparitan and Saliran Tapah. I had exposed to solve the problem
during the discussion whereas the design should be including the environmental view, propose a
pond by its area.

Week 5
Another week I got assignment to design a bungalow for client at Kuala Kangsar by using
Esteem Structural. Firstly, I need locate a grid line and propose a beam, column and slab
according to the architect drawing. By using this software, run the project and checking the
problem that had been detected. It is already done and a prepared a report to client. During my
industrial training, I also learn new software for infrastructure that used LOOP Version 5.0 to
determine a suitable diameter of pipe for each nodes and length. It is project to supply pure water
at Lenggong, Perak. After run the LOOP, it should follow the standard whereas head loss is less
than 2.0m/km and velocity is less than 0.6 m/s. Mostly, a size of pipes that used such as UPVC
and CLMS are 155/200/300/400 mm depends on result after run the application.

Week 6
In a week 6, I was learned to design pad footing by manual calculation. From that, I had learned
to use Esteem Structural to design a pad footing and compare by manual calculation. At the same
time, learn a symbol by colorings according to the legend at project Masjid Tambun, Ipoh.

In company consultant, the process of learning gives a more valuable. Even we had already done
a design and get back the feedback from the clients; it should redesign back to avoid from
dispute.

Week 7
Holidays for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Week 8

From a week by a week, I had learned a new experience from them. There are many part of
design that learns to resize column by Esteem Structural application for project Teluk Baru,
Pulau Pangkor. The design was run to get a satisfactory result. My skill in AutoCAD was applied
in editing the infrastructure for earthwork, road and drainage, reservoir, suction pump, pump
house, and others. Besides that, design a longitudinal section for road level, platform level and
invert level for project at Gerik, Perak. I also learned from the last discussion for infrastructure
design. It makes me get a valuable experience from them.

Week 9
In week 9, I went to site meeting or technical meeting for project Masjid Tambun. During my
industrial training only this project that already start a construction phase. I was given a chance
to inspect the details of pile cap according to drawing details. Some steel reinforcement spacing
is not according to details. Contractor need to remove and the steel reinforcement and replace
with the new steel reinforcement according to drawing details.

Nature of appointments

The nature of appointments that learned from them is civil & structural engineering consultancy,
project management and engineering feasibility studies. There are many aspect had learned such
as structural and infrastructure.
The daily task is mainly to design by manual or software and inspection at the site. The design is
includes the structure part such as beams, column, slab and infrastructure to determine the size of
pipes, earthwork, road elevation, sewage and others.

TECHNICAL REPORT
Nature of work
Pusaka Runding Sdn. Bhd had applied the nature of work that consists project management, site
management/supervision and design management

Project management

Project management is a set of comprehensive services, which includes the management and
coordination of all design, procurement and construction activities, as well as the
implementation, and coordination of the various tasks that form part of the client overall project
workload.
Site management/ supervision
Site management or supervision during practical that includes the monitoring and controlling,
prepare report and testing and dispute resolution.
Design management
The design management had used software and manual design. Besides that, the design checking
should be done.
Prepare document tender
Tender is an offer which incorporates the sum of money, time and other conditions required to
carry out the contract obligations in order to complete a project or a part of it consisting of
specified works.
1) PROJECT
Mosque at Tersusun Batu 4, Tambun, Mukim Hulu Kinta, Daerah Kinta, Perak.

As a trainee at Pusaka Runding Sdn. Bhd I had learned a technical work at the site. By attending
the site meeting I had learns from their discussion and found the problems during construction.
From the site meeting, there are many miscommunications between architect, consultant and
contractor. The changing of contractor drawing by consultant must be informed to the contractor
early to avoid dispute.

Design
The architect had been design an architectural drawing due to client needs. After that, consultant
are determined a suitable beams, columns, slab and other structural. Next, the calculation by
manually also used to determine the size of beam, pad footing, columns and slab. Meanwhile, the
design was done by software such as Esteem Structural and it compared by both application.
During my internship I was given a task to calculate pad footing by manually that shown an
example at the below and logbook:
Given:
Column size : 300 X 150 mm

fcu

: 30 N/mm2

: 320 KN

fy

: 460

: 250 mm

Gk

: 179

Dia.bar

: 12 mm

Qk

: 141

Soil bearing

: 170 KN/m2

From the data was given, there are steps to find a satisfied calculation for pad footing such as:
a) Design pad footing according to the BS8110: PART 1: 1997
b) Plan of area base

c) Design moment
d) Maximum moment
e) Effective depth
f) Ultimate moment
g) Mild steel
h) Punching
i) Ultimate punching force

Supervision

After site meeting, the inspection at the construction work was implementing. There a various
inspection at the site such as checking pad footing, the size of reinforcement, formwork of
ground beam according to the construction drawing.

Pad footing

Formwork for ground beam

Reinforcement

Formwork
Formwork is the term given to either temporary or permanent molds into
which concrete or similar materials are poured. In the context of concrete construction,
the falsework supports the shuttering moulds. The mosque project at Tambun use a
formwork that made of panels and accessories that act as mould to form a desired shape
with concrete. During the project, the timber formwork are used due to the easily
available to work manually and machines. It is also stiff whereas not excessive deflection
and economical for standardized size for repeated use. From figure at the above that
shown formworks for ground beam to concrete whereas it is erected quickly, highly
loaded for a few hours during the concrete placement and within a few days disassembled
for future use.

Steel Reinforcement

After lean concrete hardened, the reinforcement works are started. All reinforcement
needs to be properly stored in clean and dry condition. Besides that, it should be clean
from the rust, oil, grease, paint and dirt. When fixing at the site, a suitable size according
to the construction drawing must be followed. For the safety, the reinforcements are
already bent are not used for the construction. During inspection at the site, the steel
reinforcement also needs to be care by checking the number, size, spacing and type of
reinforcement according to the drawing or specification. Meanwhile, the checking beam
reinforcement should not be sagging and space bar need to provide between main and
secondary bar as required. Last but not least, all starters bars should be endured that is
have been tied in correct location prior to concreting.

Problem encountered and how overcome it

The mosque project had exposed to me the real situation at the site. Firstly at the site
meeting that assembled client, architected, consultant and contractor to discuss together
to solve a problem. There are many problems occur during the meeting such as:

Problem

i.

1) PROJECT
Supply pure water project at Kampung Beng, Kampung Chepor, Kampung Luat,
Kampung Talong, Kampung Pulau Chery Dan Kampung Bukit Sapi, Lenggong,
Perak

The second project that located at Lenggong, Perak that I had been participating is for
supply water for villages. In this project, there are more to consider to the infrastructure
such as rising man, suction tank, pump house, pumping main, reservoir and pipe falling
main.

Example infrastructure

Design
The infrastructure for this project had been design by LOOP Version 5.0 (Looped Distribution
Network Stimulation Program July 1986 Dr. Paul Herbert/ Daniel del Puerto). After design it,
locate a suitable size of pipe, flows the pipes starting from the reservoir. Then, the longitudinal
section was determined by calculation according to the guidelines from LAP Jilid 1: 1997. The
longitudinal section for each nodes had been located due to the flow of pipes and junction for
each pipes. The figure at the below is an example of longitudinal section for supply water project
at Lenggong, Perak.

The result of longitudinal section for the picture at the above have own calculation. The example
calculation can be refer at the below:
Given
Ground level in meter = 64.748 m
Dia. UPVC pipe PN15 = 100 mm
Depth of pipe

=1m

Solution
Ground level (depth + dia)
= 64.748 (1 + 0.1)
= 63.648

The design a whole flow of pipes, longitudinal section, sizes of pipes for villages at Lenggong,
Perak had completed by AutoCad and Loop. After that, the taking off for infrastructure was
estimated to make easily to show the progressive of project:

Before completed the drawing there are some technical work such as colouring according to the
legend.
Example:

LOOP Version 5.0

This software very helpful and effective to simulates the hydraulic characteristics of a
pressurised, looped (closed circuit) water distribution network. The network is characterised by
pipes and nodes (points of inputs/demand or pipe junctions). Before starting the infrastructure
design the data required are the description of the elements of the network such as pipe lengths,
diameters, friction coefficients, nodal demands and ground elevation, and data describing the
geometry of the network. Then the program outputs include flows and velocities in the links and
pressures at the nodes. LOOPs normal use is to simulate the hydraulic response of a network to
a single or multiple inputs with at least one known hydraulic gradient line elevation. It also
contains a sub-program for generating a cost summary once a final design is completed.
Prepare tender document
The purpose of tender document is the policy and procedure describes minimum requirements of
when and how tenders should be let and quotations obtained. Tender is formal bid documents
which are prepared by the clients or their representative for the contractor to cost out. These
documents could be prepared by quantity surveyors, architects or engineers. Tender on the other
hand is slightly more firm. Government has the intention to procure gods or services and have
listed down a list of job requirements or specified.Quotation is a fixed price for a fixed amount of
work carried out to a fixed specification.

Chapter 4: Experience Gained

Experience Gained

There are many problems can be occurred during the construction at the site and design
for infrastructure. In addition, the comprehension about the certain project can be improved
when joining the coordination, technical meeting and by the site visits that have been done
through the overall period with the employment.
As example, by joining the meeting that have been held there are many discussion have
been made which is about the problem exist during the construction works, the latest work
progression, delivery material that need to be take and cost of the project. Every representative
from the respective consultant and contractor are needed to present their job progress.

Even though some works looks like easy to handle but with procedure it make harder and
take time to complete it very well. There are some inspection and supervision which have to face
it before all works can be done well and properly.
Needless to say, during training period, I had gain more of the knowledge which I had
expected earlier. The internship is one of application in the real job within learnt while in
lecturing. But somehow, not all the theories can totally being practice on site. Thus, I had learn
more with them especially in consultant company to exposed be young engineer.

Chapter 5: Suggestion

Suggestion
To achieve the goal of the practical training, a few aspects should be looked into and improved.
After the internship completed, the inadequacies have been identified. The following suggestion
had been noticed for the future:
Extension of training duration
The training period should be extended to at least 6 months to exposed trainee from the
beginning project until completed. To be well versed in the consultant field, requires an exposure
to the entire project phases, starting from the planning stage all the way to its final completion. A
well trainee engineer to be is the one who is able to perform well on.
Multitasking

The trainees must be multitasked with various job areas. Besides that, they will have
opportunities to get involved in all stages of construction. Meanwhile, the trainee working in a
consultant firm should be assigned on the site to supervise and monitor the project progress apart
from the design work in the office.
Training placement
Some companies such as consultant or contractor accept practical trainees only to do jobs
irrelevant to engineering field. Mostly trainee complaints regarding the unsuitable job location
by the employer. The scope of work should be clearly defined before the commencement of the
training.

Chapter 6: Conclusion

Conclusion
Industrial training is good for university student to get experience when involved into
world of work which student is able to familiar with work environment. It is important to find a
valuable experience either at construction or consultant so that student will not shock when
exposed in the real work. The communication skills that require for students to interacts with
difference attitude and personality human. Students may be cannot interact well with some kind
of people for the first time but after get the experience, student will be more easily friendly for
the second time.
Besides that, student can apply the knowledge from internship to the class for the certain
subjects or some application very well. Even though, it is just part of the system but not possible
to show some ability to get trust from supervisor. At the same time, student can learn the real

protocol in work environment which more complicated. Actually, some works looks like easy to
handle but with procedure and protocol it can be harder to complete it very well.
However, through this short period of training, I still can learn many things which did not
stated in book such as the way to well managing the relationship between workers and employer.
As example, right attitude in solving the emergency problem or accident on site and the most
important, the right way to deal with client.
Last but not least it can give more valuable as trainee and graduated student can well
prepared them to face the problem in the future, having the right attitude and always to have
desire to learn all type of knowledge and skill.
