I wrote these solos in the spring of last year as a token of gratitude to
trumpeters who have championed my music.
1. Tombeau d'Arban is a tribute to the composer whose books of exercises lie
on the racks of quite every practitioner of the instrument. To Rich Clymer.
2. The Polka has a rather jazzy trio (which nevertheless maintains its
subsidiary accent on the second beat), the jazziness spilling over into the pert
coda. Since my opus 41 film music is dedicated already to composer and
trumpeter Walter Paul, I decided to inscribe the number to his mother, who
professes to enjoy my music.
3. The double-tonguing Study is for Marilyn Reid.
4. Variations. A simple theme, five variations, and then recap of the theme,
unaltered. Dedicated to Bill Rohdin.
5. A somewhat prolix Valediction, effectively an tude in slurred multiple grace
notes. To John Lambert.
