Lists of African Companies and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships as part of the WUR

deliverables for Y1
Domenico Dentoni and Dimitrios Mitsopoulos
Management Studies Group
Wageningen University and Research Centre

A. List of 200 private sector stakeholders operating at the regional (Africa) and
global level who are engaged in work relevant to Megatrend 2
A list of the 200 largest agri-food industry companies in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)is here
reported (Table 1) including basic business information in an attempt to paint a representative
picture of regional private investment in the agribusiness sector. Given the gap of knowledge
on the largest African-based companies currently investing in Africa, the selected enterprises
are only African companies or African subsidiaries of foreign multinationals.
The selected companies operate along the entire chain including agricultural production,
manufacturing/processing, retail, distribution and input supplies (chemicals, farm equipment
and machinery). The information includes website or webpage (if the company is an affiliate
of another bigger one and thus lacks of their own), turnover which is the income from sales of
goods and services (only the largest 60 of them ranked according to their turnover), area of
operations, product categories and sub-sectors and the type of business/primary business. The
company information are based on online sources, thus if a large company does not have any
web presence (which we would consider as highly unlikely), then it would not have selected
and included in this list.
The listed companies were selected based on the following inclusion criteria:

The selected companies operate at all stages of the chain such as production operations
on the farm, the storage, processing and distribution of farm commodities and items
made from them. (Davis and Goldberg, 1957). Specifically the actors in the
agribusiness supply chains are: input suppliers (chemical or seed companies),
agricultural producers (mainly farmers), food manufacturer/processing firms,
wholesaler, retailer and distributors (transportation activities). In other words the chain
consist of the agricultural production (input delivery and farming production), the food
industry (processing/manufacturing), marketing and distribution (Davis and Goldberg,
1957; World Bank, 2005; Humphrey and Memedovic, 2006)
Sub-Saharan Africa is the area under consideration as this is the focus of GCFSI for
Y1.
Companies that included in this list can be affiliates or subsidiaries of larger or
multinational companies from another country or from another continent respectively.

For the construction of this list (table 1) The Africa Report (2012) was used that chronicles
the fortunes of the top 500 companies in Africa's key business sectors each year (The Africa
Report, 2012). These rankings, which were published in February 2012, are based on firms'
1

2010 performance (the year is specified as in some cases the turnover is from 2012), point to
some of the important longer-term changes affecting African economies. The Africa Report
has in their database 7,093 African companies and after the majority of them answered a
detailed questionnaire given by The Africa Report, and then it was used to verify and to
crosscheck the information. The first 500 companies were published of the top 1,550
companies (The Africa Report, 2012). To allow comparison, they apply the same rules to all
data. So according to the methodology which was used:

All financial data had a clearly-defined source (according to the criteria that set by The
Africa Report and are not published), generally communicated to them by the
companies themselves, and referred to the 2010 financial year (in some cases
2010/11).
If presented in local currency, they converted the data into US dollar amounts
according to the rate prevailing on 31 December 2010.
They included all companies who fall under the legal jurisdiction of at least one of the
54 countries in Africa, which was why a holding company and a subsidiary can both
feature in the list.

From the Africa report listed they were selected only those companies which have relation in
agro-food industry while additional companies were added from the list of Africas Top 200
companies, a work by African Business Research Limited (financial data is courtesy of
Salami Ayo co-founder of African Business Research Limited ) and from the Africa Business
Pages (2013).

B. List of Multi-Stakeholder Platforms focusing on Megatrend 2 issues in SubSaharan Africa and worldwide
A list of MSPs is here reported (Table 2) based on Dentoni and Peterson (2011) and Dentoni
et al. (2013) that are relevant to agribusiness chain investments in Sub-Saharan Africa (and
secondly worldwide). For each platform, the following information is given: mission and
objectives of the multi-stakeholder platform, the focus sector of the platform, year of creation,
the focus area of operations, an attempt to relate the mission of the platform with the GCFSI
megatrends, in particular with the rapid food chain transformation taking place in Africa; the
number and the typology of the stakeholders participating in each partnership and the
governance structure.
