JOB DESCRIPTION

Under limited supervision, performs receiving and technical library duties for the Nyack
Library. Work involves creating, updating, and maintaining catalog records in the automated
library system (Horizon); preparing books, audio-visual materials and other media for
cataloging, and receiving and processing library material on a daily basis from a variety of
sources. Occasionally assists library patrons with locating books and materials. Reports to
the Technical Services Supervisor.
Book Drops: Process internal and external book drops. External book drops are
processed daily; morning, afternoon and evening. Internal book drop is processed
throughout the day.
Deliveries: Receive and process RCLS deliveries as they arrive. Process and distribute
UPS/FedEX/etc. deliveries.
Mail: Mail is retrieved from the Post Office and processed and distributed daily, except
Sundays.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL): Manage our ILL program, making the off-site interlibrary loan
program efficient by implementing a spreadsheet on our network drive to track our patron
requests.
Holds/Pull List(RHA): Participate in the process of the daily hold and pull list as
required.
Misc: Technical Services Department duties ranging from, but not limited to: processing,
purchase orders, accessions, bar coding, weeding, discards and other related tasks.
High School Diploma and 1 to 2 years of experience performing library cataloging work
and working with automated library systems; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience which provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable,
functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from
obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of reference materials, cataloging
manuals and related information, policies, procedures, hardware and software manuals, etc.
Requires the ability to prepare reports, catalog information, and records using prescribed
formats. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and
confidence.
Intelligence: Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and
deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization
exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or
schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain
procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively
and efficiently using Standard English, and library and information systems terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and
subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; interpret graphs; compute
discount or interest.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and
shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and
accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office
equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of
color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and
receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under different levels of stress.
Work environment is typically not stressful, but may become stressful on occasion.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or
exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
Must be able to communicate via telephone.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Knowledge of Job: Has considerable knowledge of books, magazines and related materials
available to the public. Has considerable knowledge of library techniques, systems, working
tools and procedures. Has considerable knowledge of cataloging programs of the library's
computer system; and of the policies, procedures and techniques used to develop and
maintain catalog databases. Has considerable knowledge of the reading levels and interests
of Village residents. Has considerable knowledge of available databases and files for
researching reference items. Is skilled in the use of automated library systems; to include
data entry and retrieval in the cataloging programs. Is able to operate general office
equipment. Is able to develop, update and maintain library cataloging data bases; is able to
prepare library materials for cataloging and create accurate cataloging records in the library
system; to maintain statistical records and prepare clear reports from them. Is able to
instruct patrons in the use of various office machines, computer programs and library
reference materials. Is able to effectively express ideas orally and in writing. Is able to
exercise initiative and independent judgment in applying standards to a variety of work
situations. Is able to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons and the general
public. Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by
work assignments.
Dependability: Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and meeting deadlines.
Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, Library
policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Accepts accountability for meeting assigned
responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.
Attendance: Attends work regularly and adheres to Library policies and procedures
regarding absences and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with
respect to vacation time and time-off requests.
Cooperation: Accepts supervisory instruction and direction and strives to meet the goals
and objectives of same. Questions such instruction and direction when clarification of results
or consequences are justified, i.e., poor communications, variance with Library policy or
procedures, etc. Offers suggestions and recommendations to encourage and improve
cooperation between all staff persons within the department.
Relationships with Others: Shares knowledge with supervisors and staff for mutual and
departmental benefit. Contributes to maintaining high morale among all department
employees. Develops and maintains cooperative and courteous relationships with
department employees, staffers and managers in other departments, representatives from
organizations, and the general public so as to maintain good will toward the department and
the Library and project a good departmental image. Tactfully and effectively handles
requests, suggestions and complaints from other departments and persons in order to
maintain good will within the Library. Interacts effectively with fellow employees, patrons,
Library Director, professionals and the general public.
Coordination of Work: Plans and organizes daily work routine. Establishes priorities for
the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Avoids
duplication of effort. Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and
establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Attends meetings, planning sessions and
discussions on time. Implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated
schedules. Maintains a calendar for meetings, deadlines and events.
Safety and Housekeeping: Adheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established
by the Library and various regulatory agencies. Sees that the standards are not violated.
Maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
