accordance with his own procedures, to assess whether products made by the same
manufacturing process meet the requirements of the order. The products inspected and tested
may not necessarily be the products actually supplied
Notations for welding - notes on the shop drawings of those joints or groups of joints in which it
is especially important that the welding sequence and technique of welding be carefully controlled
to minimize welding under restraint and to avoid undue distortion
Other metals - cast steel for structural purpose
Protective paint system - the sum of the coats of paints related products, which are to be
applied, or which have been applied to a substrate to provide corrosion protection
Plans - complete design with sizes, sections, and the relative locations of various members. All
levels and dimensions must be indicated in a scale large enough to convey the information
adequately
Purlin - secondary horizontal structural member for roofs
Rafter - primary beam supporting the roof
Rigid-frame - assumes that beam-to-column connections have sufficient rigidity to hold virtually
unchanged the original angles between intersecting members
Rod - thin long member to take force
Rolled steel joist - rolled steel section with cross section resembling the letter I, but in which the
flange thickness tapers, being thicker at the web
Rolled steel section - steel product in the form of a long member of constant defined cross

Temporary Planking
Provide temporary planking and working platforms as necessary to effectively complete work.
3 03 05
Clean concrete and masonry bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials and roughen to improve bond
to surfaces. Clean bottom surfaces of base and bearing plate. Set loose and attached base plates and
bearing plates for structural members on wedges or other adjusting devices. Tighten anchor bolts after
supported members have been positioned and plumbed. Do not remove wedges or shims, but if
protruding, cut off flush with edges of base or bearing plate prior to packing with grout. Pack grout solidly
between bearing surfaces and bases or plates to ensure that no voids remain. Finish exposed surfaces,
protect installed materials, and allow to cure. For proprietary grout materials, comply with manufacturers
instructions.
3 03 06
Assembly / Erection
Set structural frames accurately to lines and elevations indicated in erection drawings.
Align and adjust various members forming part of complete frame or structure before permanently
fastening. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in elevation and alignment.
Establish required leveling and plumbing measurements on mean operating temperature of structure.
Make allowances for differences between temperature at time of erection and mean temperature at which
structure will be when completed and in service.
Clean surfaces that will be in permanent contact before assembly.
Splice members only where indicated and accepted on drawings.
Driftpins may be used only to bring several parts together, and shall not be used in such manner as to
distort or to damage the material or to enlarge holes in main material.
Erection shall be according to rules given in the applicable standards and design provisions.
3 03 07
Anchor bolts
Anchor bolts and other connections between the structural steel and foundations shall be properly located
and built into connecting work.
3 03 08
Erection Bolts
Unless removal is required, all erection bolts used in welded construction may be tightened securely and
left in place. Temporary connections shall be provided to hold steel in place where necessary.
If erection bolts are removed, the holes shall be filled with plug welds.
Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by using drift pins. Ream holes that must be
enlarged to admit bolts.
3 03 09
Flame Cutting
Do not use gas cutting torches in field for correcting fabrication errors in structural framing. Cutting will be
permitted only on secondary members that are not under stress, as approved by the Engineer. Finish
gas-cut sections equal to a sheared appearance when permitted.
3 03 10
Welding
Any shop paint on surfaces adjacent to joints to be site-welded shall be wire brushed to eliminate the
paint film prior to welding.
Field welding of attachments to installed embedments in contact with concrete shall be done in such a
manner as to avoid excessive thermal expansion of the embedment which could result in spalling or
cracking of the concrete or excessive stress in the embedment anchors.
3 03 11
Lack of contact bearing not exceeding a gap of 0.16 mm, regardless of the type of splice used ( partialpenetration groove welded or bolted), will be acceptable unless otherwise indicated.

Technical Terms
Austenitic stainless steel - stable at temperatures above 800 deg C
Brass - an alloy of copper and zinc, containing between 5 and 40 %
zinc
Bronze - basically an alloy of copper and tin, additional elements may
be added for specific properties
Cast iron - cast iron is an alloy of mainly iron, carbon and silicon. The
carbon contents are usually between 2,5 and 4 %.
Electroplating - the electrodeposition of an adherent metallic coating
upon an electrode for the purpose of securing a surface with properties
or dimensions different from those of the basis metal
Ferritic stainless steel - stable at temperatures up to about 800 deg C;
the most resistant and generally used in building contains about 17 %
chromium
Martensitic stainless steel - ferritic steel with a higher carbon content,
which has been rapidly cooled from above a critical temperature and so
becomes very hard, yet has a low corrosion resistance
Stainless steel - generally there are three different types of stainless
steels: martensitic, ferritic and austenitic; the last one is mostly used for
architectural and engineering purposes; a standard quality contains 18
% chromium and 8 % nickel (known as 18-8); the higher quality
contains 18 % chromium, 10 % nickel and 3 % molybdenum (known as
18-10-3)
Steel - a material with iron as the predominant element, having a
carbon content generally less than 2 % and containing other elements.
A limited number of chromium steels may have more than 2 % carbon,
but 2 % is the usual dividing line between steel and cast iron.
