Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Luke 6:20 (NAB-Revised Edition)
Happy are those who are concerned for the poor;
the LORD will help them when they are in trouble.
Psalm 41:1 (GNT)
They say it is hard to preach to empty stomachs. I dare say it
is harder to preach to full stomachs. This was precisely what Moses
was preempting when he said to the Israelites, by way of warning,
When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he swore
to your ancestors..., a land with fine, large cities that you did not build,
with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did
not plant; and when, therefore, you eat and are satisfied, be careful not
to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that
house of slavery (Dt 6:10-12). This was what eventually happened
when they got settled in the promised land and became a prosperous
nation; pretty soon they forgot the covenant and turned to false gods,
profaning the name of the Lord.
The same writer would also say in Deuteronomy 8:3-4: The LORD
therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna,
a food unknown to you and your ancestors, so you might know that
it is not by bread alone that people live, but by every word that comes
forth from the mouth of the LORD. The Lord had allowed them to experience physical hunger so that they would discover a more important
kind of hungerspiritual hunger, hunger for the true breadGods
Word. That, he says, was the reason why he fed them with manna,
a food unknown to them and their ancestors. Manna was supposed
to be the bread of poverty, not a bread of prosperity, the bread of affliction, not a bread of luxury. It was the kind of bread that would not make
them forget, the kind of bread that would make them long for the true
food of Gods Word.
It was with this true bread that God had intended to empower Israel,
his chosen people. He had chosen them in their poverty so that He
could enrich them with true wealth; He had taken pity on them in their
slavery, so that He could empower them with that which alone could
make them strongGods creative and life-giving Word. They were to
regard nothing as more valuable than the covenant. Only Gods Word,
alive in their hearts, could keep them closely bonded with the Lord in
an eternal covenant. Only with Gods Word, as lamp to their feet and
light to their path (Ps 119:105), could transform the land into the Lords
own heritage.
It is only in this light that we can truly say the poor are truly blessed;
that only God, not any other king or false god, reigns among them
(Lk 6:20). For only by knowing their true treasure will they learn to seek
first Gods kingdom and its righteousness (Mt 6:33). Only then will they
learn compassion and generosity for those in need; only then will there
be no poor among them (Dt 15:4); only then will they live a blessed life
indeed.
We cannot afford to miss the depth of wisdom in this paradox about
blessing in poverty, even as we view it as a problem in our country,
even as we struggle to rise above it and dream of a better and more
prosperous condition for our people. Why should we dream of a prosperity that kills our sense of solidarity and community? What sense
is there in aspiring for a kind of affluence that breeds spiritual impoverishment? Why should we trade our faith, our families, our laughter
and our music with the delusion of self-sufficiency and the curse
of individualism?
There is no reason why we should condemn ourselves to the
same mistakes committed by nations that have traded their faith with
material prosperity. We need not replicate patterns of so-called progress and development that build a society whose god is mammon.
We can come up with better templates founded on Gods Word, truly
empowering to the poor and transformative to the land.

John 17:21-22
The next stage of the campaign, the Handwritten Unity Bible Project, designed to
foster greater interest in Gods Word and
raise funds for MTBO Bibles was launched
in September 2010.
Stories that show peoples hunger for the Word
and how the Bible is changing lives A grandmother from Tondo whose short-tempered, unforgiving heart was changed with one that is more
patient, sensitive to Gods Word, and committed
to following Him; a catechist from Blumentritt
who witnessed how the youth in her parish
begun standing up for the Word of God and delivering the Good News to other members of
their parish, both young and old; a loudmouthed
mother of five in Tondo, who learned to control
her tongue and be more patient with her husband
and children; a depressed youth animator from
Tuguegarao who found new hope and comfort
in the Scriptures and learned to hold on to Gods
promises in the Bible.
