II.B.TECH - I SEMESTER SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS NOVEMBER, 2009
THERMODYNAMICS
(Common to ME, AE)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
---
1.a] What is meant by quasi static process and explain any practical example of such process.
b] A system with initial internal energy of 300KJ is receiving heat of 280KJ at constant
volume process and rejects heat of 260KJ at constant pressure when 60KJ of work is
done on the system. The system is brought to its original state by an adiabatic process.
Calculate the adiabatic work and value of internal energy at salient points. [4+12]

2.a] Compare and contrast the working and evaluation of heat pump, heat engine and
Refrigerator.
b] Air at 600 C and 0.6MPa is having 2Kg is expanding adiabatically in a closed system
until its volume is doubled and its temperature becomes equal to that of the surroundings
which are at 100 C and 105KPa.Calculate the Maximum work and change in availability.
[6+10]

3. Steam which is initially at 400oC and 7MN/ m 2 is expanding isentropically to a pressure

of 1.6MN/ m 2 . It is then reheated at constant pressure it has a temperature of 3100 C . It
is isentropically further expanded to a pressure of 140KN/ m 2 . Calculate the condition of
steam after isentropic expansion, heat transfer per Kg of steam to carryout at constant
pressure process. Use steam tables and represent the processes on the diagram.
[16]

4. When octane (CH 3OH ) is burned with 300% theoretical air when the pressure is
0.1MPa, calculate the volumetric and gravimetric analysis of combustion. [16]

5. At the beginning of compression stroke in a diesel engine the conditions existing are 1
bar, 0.15 m3 and 320K with a compression ratio of 16. The maximum temperature of the
cycle is 1800K, calculate the cycle efficiency and m.e.p. [16]

6.a] Define humidity ratio and degree of saturation of moist air.

b] A solid vessel contains a mixture of air and dry saturated steam at 40 0 C . The ratio of
mass of air to that of steam is 0.115, calculate the pressure in the solid vessel.
[6+10]

Cont…..[2]
[2]

7.a] Explain in detail the enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of combustion.

b] How much water is condensed per kg of fuel, where in Methanol (CH 3OH ) is burned
with 200% theoretical air in an engine. The products are brought to 110KPa and 320 C .
[8+8]

8.a] For the same compression ratio and heat rejection, of Otto, Diesel and Dual cycles, which
is more efficient ? Draw p-v and T-S diagram and explain.
b] If the fuel cut off is delayed from 6% to 10%, calculate the change in efficiency of diesel
cycle with compression ratio of 16. [8+8]
