Mahishaasura Mardhini

Scene 1
Narrator: Long ago, there was a wicked demon called Mahishasura. He wanted to rule
the entire world and trouble all the people. To become the most powerful, here he is
doing a severe penance to Lord Brahma.
Mahishaasura: om namo brahma devaaya.. om namo brahma devaaya... [keeps
repeating]
Narrator: Many Days passed, many months passed and even years. Mahisasura
continued his hard penance to please Lord Brahma. Finally Lord Brahma was pleased and
he appeared.
Lord Brahma: [appearing from the side] O Mahisha, open your eyes.
Mahishaasura: Bless me my Lord. Please fulfill my wishes.
Lord Brahma: Mahisha, I'm pleased with your devotion and penance. What do you
seek?
Mahishaasura: [with pride] Lord, I do not want to die. I want to rule the entire
universe.
Please make me an immortal.
Lord Brahma: O Mahisha, you are asking for the impossible. Everyone must die. Seek
something else.
Mahishasura: Then, please make me so strong that no man shall be able to kill me. Not
even the Gods.
Lord Brahma: Tathaastu. So Be it, Mahisha.
Mahishaasura: ha ha ha ha..., I am the strongest. Nobody can kill me now. I'm the
Lord. Everyone should worship me. Yes, all should serve the great Mahishaasura.... ha,
haa...haaaa [roars]
Scene 2
Narrator:
The all-powerful Mahishaasura blessed by this boon started torturing animals and
misbehaving with people. The arrogant Mahishasura didnt leave the sages alone.
[Mahishasura enters and he sees a group of sages offering prayers to Lord Indra, the king
of Gods]
Sages [all together]: [are sitting around a fire and praying]
Om sahanaavavatu, shanau bhunaktu
Sahaveeryam karavaavahai
Tejasvinaa vadhiitamastu
Maa vidvishaavahai, Om shaantih shaantih shaantihi
om agnaye swaahaa.., agnaye idam na mama...

om varuNaaya swaahaa.., varuNaaya idam na mama...

om indraaya swaahaa.., indraaya idam na mama...
Mahishaasura: Who? Indra? Oh, Sages, you should offer your prayers to me. I am the
Lord. Go away from here. Never ever try to insult me. Go...
Sages : MAhisha, leave us alone. We arent going to worship you. We pray to devataas,
who always do good deeds and help us in our bad times.
Mahishaasura: Ha Ha HA. Your Lord Indra or fire God i.e. Agni devata will not be able
to help you. I have a boon from Lord Brahma himself! Nobody can touch me!! Ha ha ha
Mahishaasura destroys the fire pyre and goes away.
Narrator :
Here Lord Indra, the king of Gods is worried by the increased torture of the
Mahishaasura and other asuras. Indra, along with other Gods and Godesses rush to Lord
Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh for their help and advice to get rid of the demon
Mahishaasura.
[Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma are in the center of the stage. All the other gods are in
front of him with folded hands.]
Lord Indra: Lord, please protect the world from the wicked Mahishaasura.
He has captured both heaven and earth. Demons are everywhere.
Lord Shiva: Listen, oh, Gods. No individual can defeat the demon Mahishaasura. He has
a blessing that no one can kill him.
Lord Brahma: But, there is a way.
Lord Vishnu: The united strength of all of you alone can destroy him.
Lord Brahma : Devi Parvati you have our blessings to take the form of
Chamundeshwari.
Parvati bows to Lord Brahma.
Lord Vishnu : Each God Goddess present here will offer their precious weapons and
their devine strength to you devi Parvati!
Parvati comes in front and all Gods [take out their weapons, raise both the hands and
start shouting]
Narrator : Goddess Sarawati comes forward..
Saraswati: Devi take all my knowledge.
Narrator : Then comes Goddess Lakshmi
Lakshmi: Devi Parvati , I offer all all my wealth and strength.
Indra: Devi take my vajraayudha. the diamond sword,

Shiva: Take my trident.

Vishnu: I offer The the sacred disc "The sudarshana to the devi!
Sun God: I will give you the power of 10,000 Suns inside. You will shine like 1000s of
suns and also have the power.
.
All other gods together say: take all our weapons...
"Jai chamundeshwari", "jai kaali", "jai durga", Jai Chandika
"Jai chamundeshwari", "jai kaali", "jai durga", Jai Chandika
[thus saying they surround Parvati and start going around her] and then Durga appears
from within]
"Jai chamundeshwari", "jai kaali", "jai durga", Jai Chandika
Parvati exits and Durga enters the stage.
Lord Brahma : Chandika
Durga : Pranam Pitamah
Lord Brahma : You have been blessed by all the Gods. You are the most powerful
Goddess in the universe.
Lord Vishnu: You have been born to kill the bad demons that are now ruling the
universe and bring the goodness back.
Lord Shiva : help the Gods in their battle with the demon and their king Mahishasura.
Durga : My Pranams to all the Gods and Goddesses present here. I will surely fulfill
my duty for which I am created.I will destroy all the demons by the power bestowed
upon me by all of you.
All say:

Scene 4
Narrator : The beautiful Durga, bedecked in jewels and golden armor and equipped with the

fearsome weaponry of the gods, was ready to engage in battle with the fierce and cruel
Mahishasura. Her lion's thunderous roars shook the three worlds. Mahishasura and his demon
allies found their attention drawn from heaven to Earth, as Durga's power moved its way
towards heaven.
[Goddess Durga enters the stage with a trishul in her hand. All gods follow her, saying

"jai kaali", "jai durge".. Mahishaasura enters from the other side.
Mahishaasura :Hey beautiful devi what are you doing in the battlefield? You should be the
queen in my palace. These weapons are not for a beautiful woman like you. Accept me as
your Swami and I will give you all the pleasures of life!
Durga : Mahishasura, You arrogant asura, I have come here to kill you. My swami is only
the Supreme Lord! It is the Supreme Lord you has created me!
Mahishasura : Ha Ha Ha, no one a man or God can kill me. I have been blessed by
Brahma. And you are just a frail, feeble, helpless woman! Ha Ha Ha
Durga : You fool! Dont underestimate the power of a woman. I am the combined
power of all the Gods, and Brahma blessed me himself. If you are a warrior, fight with me
! If you are a coward, run away and I shall find you from anywhere .
Mahishasura : Ha Ha Ha . You Beautiful, headstrong, stubborn Woman you will surely
repent this!
Narrator : The fight between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura begins. Mahishasura's armies

were struck down effortlessly by Durga, Mahishasura was shocked and enraged by the power of
Durga. Mahishasura took form of various creatures to fight against Durga. But he couldnt
defeat Durga. The fight went on for nine days and nine nights and at the end..Durga killed
Mahishaasura.
They fight and Goddess Durga hits him with her trishul. Mahishaasura falls down.
[Durga dances] She is very angry.
All the Gods and Godesses come on stage and start singing
ayi giri nandini, nandita medini
vishwa vinodini nandanute....:
