Install Guide Red Hat Linux Enterprise Server

By Kefa Rabah, krabah@globalopenversity.org Feb 22, 2010 GTS Institute

Introduction
The world's leading open source application platform

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a Linux distribution produced by Red Hat and targeted toward the
commercial market, including mainframes. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is released in server versions for
x86, x86_64, Itanium, PowerPC and IBM System z, and desktop versions for x86 and x86_64. All of Red
Hat's official support and training, and the Red Hat Certification Program center on the Red Hat
Enterprise Linux platform

On one certified platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers your choice of: (i) Applications - Thousands
of certified ISV applications; (ii) Deployment - Including standalone or virtual servers, cloud computing,
or software appliances; (iii) Hardware - Wide range of platforms from the world's leading hardware
vendors. This gives IT departments’ unprecedented levels of operational flexibility. And it gives ISVs
unprecedented market reach when delivering applications. Certify once, deploy anywhere. All while
providing world-class performance, security, and stability. And unbeatable value. This is why today Red
Hat is the platform of choice.

Today most IT solutions shops and customers using new deployment paradigms, including virtualization,
need not only the confidence that they can deploy on the widest range of hardware and applications to
today and over the coming years – but also that there bottom line will be low and good ROI – that’s the
power of open source solutions. Today, the Red Hat’s open source development brings you the world's
largest open source ecosystem of certified hardware and software.

Today when planning or modifying your IT infrastructure, it makes sense to base your IT projects
solutions on open source technologies wherever practical – from the virtualization hypervisor to the SOA
middleware to the end user application – you can guarantee that you'll make the most of your IT budget
and good ROI. Despite what vendors of single and proprietary solutions tell you about their product’s cost
– it’s the overall total cost that matters. And open source solutions offer lower total costs:
• Flexibility - deploy what you need, when you need, how you need it
• Lower capital expense and operational expense
• Proven superior product quality - better security, higher performance
• Elimination of vendor lock-in - puts the customer in control.
• Technology leadership - driven by industry-wide collaboration

Moreover, today Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides a standardized environment for your applications so
they can be deployed however your business requires. And Red Hat application partners need only certify
their applications once. Finally, with thousands of applications certified to run on Red Hat Enterprise
Linux, you can run the application you need, where you need it, today and in the future.

Global Open Versity ICT Labs Install Guide RHEL 5 Server v1.0

Solution
In this Hands-on Labs module, you will learn how to install RHEL 5. You’ll also learn how to
perform post-installation configuration e.g., upgrade the system with new patches and bug fixes,
configure static IP address from dynamic one, change the computer hostname, modify hosts file,
perform ping test among others. Finally, Administering Linux and Unix-based servers does not need to
be the scourge of your work day. With a handy tool called Webmin as part of your arsenal, you can regain
full control of your servers’ setup and configuration via the Web browser. So in the final analysis, I will
show you how to install Webmin to add teeth and clout in taking control of administrating your servers. In
the Hands-on Lab assignment you’ll have an opportunity to install a Web server (httpd), MySQL server,
PostgreSQL server and PHP. Other assignments include installing DNS server, DHCP server and other
assignments. The entire lab training was performed on VMware.
