1. COMPETITORS ANALYSIS
5.1.

STRUCTURE OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY

There are 16 textile mills in the organized or formal sector in Ethiopia which are
presently active. Majority of the textile mills were set up by the government in 1960s, many
of which were privatized in terms of ownership and/or management. Out of the sixteen textile
mills, eight are vertically integrated and having spinning, weaving/knitting and processing.
There are three stand alone spinning mills which supply yarn to local and overseas market.
There is one independent weaving mill which produces grey cloth for export market and three
knitting mills which cater to the requirements of local garment makers. Ten mills have
processing facilities for woven and knitted fabrics. In terms of location, the textile mills are
spread all over the country.

5.2.

CURRENT AND PROJECT PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF ETHIOPIAN TEXTILE

INDUSTRY.

There are 16 medium and large scale textile factories in Ethiopia(2012/13) and 7 textile factories
are pipe-line. Thirteen out of sixteen are composite textile mills while three are spinning mills
produce yarn. The installed production capacity of these 14 is 68,175 tons of yarn consuming
85,218.75 tons of lint cotton at 80% recovery. Current and expected yarn production capacity of
textiles for the next three years(2013/14-2015/16 is given below.
