Basic function of Boiler feed water pump is to produce sufficient amount of pres

sure required to turbine inlet with added amount of pressure drop of flow path o
f boiler components.
Pressure required to develop through bfp = Turbine inlet pressure + Pressure dr
op of boiler components
and also its a prime important in case of develop more than saturation pressur
e in case of supercritical boiler segments concern

Boiler feed pump is used to feed water to steam generator boiler drum at desired
pressure and temperature.
Need of boiler feed pump?
As the water is fed to the steam generator it has to be at the temperature & Pre
ss
ure that of the steam generator.
Boiler feed pump
Process of water flow?
Boiler feed pump extract water from de-aerator and feed it to the boiler drum vi
a H.P heaters and economizer.
General configuration of Boiler feed pump?
Generally 2 Turbine driven boiler feed pumps (1 Working & 1 Standby) & 1 Motor d
riven boiler feed pump is used for 1 unit.
Turbine driven boiler feed pump: It works with the steam extraction from Interme
diate Pressure (I.P.) turbine exhaust.
Motor driven boiler feed pump: It works with a motor as the name specifies.

Variable Frequency Drive

Why VFD is required?
Variable frequency drives allow reducing power consumption up to 30% or more and
obtaining a payback time on the investments often lower than 1
2 years. Moreove
r, the quality of the equipments and the lower mechanical stress on the installe
d machinery guarantee it a longer life time and a substantial cut on its mainten
ance costs. The present document aims to examine the energy benefits of a viable
technology change on the existing motorized systems at Lanco. Changes may inclu
de replacements of motors with low efficiency and / or system upgrade through th
e retrofit of variable speed drives to the existing motors. The energy consumpti
on analysis also leads to an economical estimation of the savings and a balance
to the possible investment.
What is VFD?
A variable frequency drive (VFD) is an electrical variable speed drive that is a
dded to motor-driven systems to help save energy. Motor-driven systems are desig
ned to handle peak loads. When these operating systems work for extended periods
of time at a reduced load, it wastes energy. Adding a VFD allows you to adjust
the motor-speed capability and match it with motor-output load. This is how it s
aves energy. The motor-driven system is connected to the VFD and allows us to ha
ve speed control by changing the frequency of the motor-supply voltage.
How VFD functions?
A motor-driven system is controlled by the frequency of the supply voltage and r
otates on a fixed speed. An alternating current that is applied produces a magne
tic field that rotates at synchronous speed. The only way to alternate synchrono
us speed is through a VFD, which converts the power in three stages. In the rect

ifier stage, the power is converted to a higher adjustable DC voltage. In the in

verter stage, the power transistors in the rectified DC are switched off and on.
This produces a voltage waveform at the frequency you want. In the control syst
em, the voltage wave form receives information from the motor-driven system and
will adjust the output voltage to the selected value.
