t H olidays in Austria! We spend almost half of our lives sitting earning our daily bread, so many of our thoughts revolve around our jobs and everyday lives. But when
we go on holiday, we perk up again! We want to get out in the fresh air! We yearn for change, but we seek inner peace, too. And we yearn for unspoilt nature, an
agreeable climate and clean water. Whilst our bodies seek equilibrium and movement, our hearts and souls gradually revert to their natural rhythm. With every step we
take towards the summit, our everyday worries seem to become smaller and more trivial. Until they have disappeared altogether. What does a bird’s-eye view of Austria
v look like? Paragliders and hang gliders inevitably find their own personal answers to this question. And the plucky souls who explore roaring mountain rivers in rafts
ivo will long remember the fun they had with their groups. Water attracts us: Austria has some 300 bathing lakes with a water quality we can be proud of, and some of the
world‘s finest golf courses. Riding stables, children’s farms, hiking villages, climbing camps, tennis hotels, windsurfing, kite surfing and wakeboard schools – Austria
will get you moving! We wish you a hearty welcome! I hope you have a tremendous adventure holiday in Austria.

Austria’s Hiking Villages and the magic of hiking!

H iking fascinates – and has done for millennia! The feeling
of wellbeing associated with hiking comes not so much from
the knowledge that one is doing something physically healthy,
but rather from experiencing nature at first hand. When recalled
later on, this feeling of wellbeing is connected with memories of
unforgettable times.

An especially important aspect of all this is the conscious awareness

of nature. Every location has its own history that is there to be discov-
ered. Austria’s Hiking Villages put together displays to tell their stories
and do all they can to draw the visitor’s attention to the elements of
nature specific to that region.

Fifty regions from all over Austria have adopted this idea and
fascinate visitors with unique hikes, each with its own exciting story
to tell. What is the story of the Ötscher Tormäuer, what role does
the Hohe Tauern National Park play in the preservation of regional
fauna and flora, and how did the “Emperor’s Mountains” get
their name?

Exciting stories, brought together with clearly described hiking

Tirolean farmhouses – a hiker’s paradise

T he farmers of Tirol are experts when it comes to show their guests the fauna and flora,
the development of the ancient cultural landscapes and the scenic beauty of their
region. After all, it has always been the farmers who have left their mark on our beautiful
country. As mountain and ski guides, as dairymen and herdsmen, Tirolean farmers have
always been vital ambassadors for Tirol.
Some 400 farms from all districts of North and East Tirol are members of the “Framhouse
Holidays in Tirol” organization. Visitors to Tirol will find a colourful range of attractive hikes.
Guided tours in the Lienz Dolomites, in the Hohe Tauern National Park, in many ares of
the Central Alps of North Tirol (Kitzbühel, Ziller Valley, Stubai Valley, Ötz Valley, Pitz Valley,
Kauntertal), but also in parts of the North Tirolean Limestone Alps (Tannheimer Valley,
Reutte, Lech Valley).
Deep-rooted, down-to-earth and honest – these are the character traits that are typical
of the country folk of Tirol. As a guest at one of the many wonderful farmsteads, holiday-
makers very soon feel comfortable and at ease. Animals that can be stroked and petted
are a significant element of the holiday experience, especially for children.
A hiking holiday on a farm costs as little as € 21 per person in a comfortable double room,
incl. country breakfast, or in a holiday flat from € 54 (4 persons).

still – far from stress, work and pressure – where you can listen to
your own heart, recuperate and relax? Yes, they do exist, and in Mittersill

readily found when hiking!
Hikers and mountain climbers get itchy feet in the region where Austria’s
highest mountain and the majestic 3,000 m peaks of the Hohe Tauern
National Park as well as gentle slate and grass mountains are just a
stone’s throw away. Countless marked hiking trails of every degree
of difficulty take you from Mittersill, Hollersbach and Stuhlfelden to
numerous new destinations.
A few special tips:

* Take the panorama cable car from Hollersbach to the superb hiking
area of the Kitzbühel Alps for a stunning view of the mighty 3,000 m
peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

* On exciting trails, learn about terrain, animals and plants that are now
rarely found – the Wasenmoos moor trail, stream or bee discovery
trail, and discovery herb gardens.

* Explore and enjoy nature on hikes and excursions – the fitness

programme and the special programmes of the Hohe Tauern National

Wonderful hiking worlds!

U pper Austria welcomes you to its wonderful hiking worlds!
Each of its diverse hiking regions has its own special character.
Like the Mühlviertel in the North of the province. In this gentle hill country,
an enjoyable voyage of discovery on foot goes hand in hand with a superb
culinary experience. After all, these granite highlands boast a large number
of breweries whose beer is characterized by the flavour of the water
drawn from the primary rock. The River Danube forms the border of
the Mühlviertel to the South, and the area along the river is an ideal terrain
for all those who love to don their hiking boots. From the summer of 2010,
the Danube Trail leads right through Upper Austria between Passau and
Grein. This long-distance hiking trail runs for 450 kilometres along both
banks of the river. Easy daily stages branch off from the main route along
the wooded slopes of the river.
Lovers of the mountains are sure to get their money’s worth in the South
of Upper Austria. The Limestone Alps Trail runs in eleven daily stages for a
total of 150 kilometres through the Limestone Alps National Park and the
holiday region of Pyhrn-Priel. The wooded mountains glow in every shade
of green, and above them the majestic peaks of the Limestone Alps – this

Mountain biking region Schladming-Dachstein

S ince spring of 2008, the Schladming-Dachstein region has
offered 20 new mountain bike trails developed by Austrian
bikers for bikers. Between the three downhill stretches on the
Planai and the Dirt Park in Schladming, bikers can clock up 930 kilo-
metres and an elevation gain of 25,000 metres; this is supplemented
by an exceptionally good tourism infrastructure, such as hotels specially
equipped to accommodate the biking guest. The 20 new trails have
also been plotted for GPS; the data can be downloaded at
www.schladming-dachstein.at

The corresponding maps are also available and were specifically

designed so that each individual trail is shown on a small map and
which can be pocketed without taking up much space.
In this tourism region, bikers can cover a total of 930 km of marked
bike trails and 48 routes in all levels of difficulty. They range from the
river route and the Enns cycle path to challenging mountain bike tours
at various different altitudes.

countryside.

The system of cycle paths takes guests to cultural highlights and invites
them to learn more about the places where unique natural products are

wine growers. It’s also worth visiting the flower-bedecked town centres: a

A mountain bike specialist can be many things: a skilled bicycle
mechanic, a wellverse bike guide, an experienced diet consultant,
or a perfect holiday planner. In Tirol, mountain bike specialists combine
all these. They know how a bike works, have a suitable route for every
type of bike in their saddlebags, can satisfy a biker‘s hunger with healthy
food, and have wellness facilities to help with rest and recuperation. They
are professionals with expertise in everything relating to mountain biking
– and that over the entire 5,100 km network of bike trails. Small wonder,
therefore, that the biking country of Tirol is an open secret. With all-
round service and care, bikers of all ages – whether riding for pleasure or
single trail fans – are in good hands here at the heart of the Alps.

the children how to feed the animals safely and help them understand the

preparing feed together and making toys for pets, children play games that
teach them not just “correct etiquette” for the cowshed, but how to treat
