STRESS AND HEALTH


Good morning to our lecturer Madam Balkis and friends. Today I would to talk about
Stress and Health. What is stress? We generally use the word "stress" when we feel
that everything seems to have become too much for us and also when we feel that we
can't cope with pressure that placed upon us. Everyone experienced stress. A little
stress is good for us, but excessive stress may be harmful. When a person is distress,
they will probably show some symptoms of stress. There are four type of stress
symptoms, such as cognitive symptoms, emotional symptoms, physical symptoms and
behavioral symptoms. Example of cognitive symptoms and emotional symptoms are
constant worrying and moodiness while example of physical symptoms and behavioral
symptoms are frequent colds and isolating yourself from others.
Although just enough stress can be a good thing, stress overload is a different story.
In order to release stress, one must find out the causes of stress. Pressures that are
last too long, or troubles that are shouldered alone, can cause people to feel stress
overload. There are some of the things that can overwhelm the body's ability to cope if
they continue for a long time such as
being bullied or exposed to violence or injury. A women who has been beaten by her
husband for a long time would probably feel stress. Besides, relationship stress or
family conflicts would definitely affect a childs emotion. Crammed schedules, not having
enough time to rest and relax will aslo cause a person to feel stress.
There are many ways to manage stress. Spending time with family is one of the
ways to manage stress. By spending time with our beloved family members, we can
stay relaxed and avoid stress as we will forget our work or problems for a while.
Besides, learn to express your feelings. Do not bottle up your feelings. Share your
feelings with a friend, a family members or someone whom you trust. Moreover, allow
yourself to breaks. Exercise regularly. Sitting around can cause stress to mount and
make you feel nervous and upset. Try to spend 3 hours per week to exercise and you

will find that your stress level getting lower. I know it's hard when you're stressed out,
depressed and don't feel like moving a muscle. The problem is, things will just feel
worse if you don't. So, however small it is, make that first move.
Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress
disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the
immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and
speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you
more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
In a nutshell, people do get stressed up. However, if you feel that you are unable to
handle stress, seek help. Avoid self-medication or escape. Alcohol and drugs may seem
to offer temporary relief but they only disguise stress or problems. Remember it is you
who decides what is better for you. So keep the stresses out and enjoy your life.

REFLECTION
The task assigned to me is to select a topic from question paper and find three
articles that are related to the topic. These three articles can be found from different sources
such as book, magazine, internet and newspaper. After discussed among my group members,
we decided to choose Health as our group topic.
Article that I searched in internet is regarding mental stress, and the reason of
choosing it, is because i often get stressed up easily.
During this assignment, I learnt ways to manage the stress while reading those articles. At the
same times, I realized if we dont manage the stress well, our health will be badly affected.

Following step is to summarize that information into graphic organizers. In
order to do it, I need to learn to construct graphic summarization by using Microsoft Work. Since
I am not very familiar how to construct graphic with computer, I therefore obtained helps from
my friends. At the same times, I managed to abstract the main and supporting information from
those articles. It was indeed a big challenge for me to identify the four important main points
from a 600 words article after reading through it several times.
Upon completed graphic organizer, I started to write the speech for public
presentation. Whenever I could not understand a word, I would search online or refer to
dictionary. My writing skill and vocabulary had improved significantly after the exercise, example
of what I learnt are overwhelm which means overpower, vulnerable which means weak and
so on.
Last but not least, conduct a public presentation base on the speech that I had
prepared. At beginning, I faced weakness with lacking of confidence to conduct public
presentation in front of the class. In order to overcome it, I practiced repeatedly in front of the

mirror to make sure that I remembered every single sentence in my speech. Besides, I regularly
check the pronunciation of the words that I am not familiar with.
My strengths in this assignment are that my graphic organizer is clear and
straight to the point. My speech is simple to understand, the audience therefore gets my points
easily. Moreover, I showed confidence along my presentation when I delivered it in front of the
class.
In conclusion, understanding the disadvantages to individuals who get
stressed up easily and symptoms about the illness, on the other hand, I gained more
knowledge, experiences and skills after doing this assignment. Therefore, I learnt to manage my
stress well whenever facing difficulties.
Furthermore, I discovered that teamwork is very important in completing a
group assignment. Hence I would like to thank my group members, Angeline Hong and Loke
Chun Chie for their cooperation. Also, to thank my lecturer Madam Balkis for her clear
explanation and the guidance given to me on my public speaking skill.
