REQUIREMENT FOR EACH MEMBERS GRADE

Fellow (FIChemE) Chartered Chemical Engineer.

Sustained at this greater level than that required for Chartered status for a significant
period of time, usually in the region of five years

Chartered Member (MIChemE) Chartered Chemical Engineer.

Have attained an internationally recognised and respected mark of competence and show
commitment to the chemical engineering profession. IChemE Chartered Chemical Engineers are
also eligible to gain one or both of the following registrations dependent upon the nature of their
technical experience:

2.

What is code of ethics?

A guided principle in form of set of writing by an organization to its employee and
management to guide their action towards honesty and integrity. Different professions
have different ethical code.

3.

Write down your own code of ethics for UiTM Students.

Ethical code for UiTM students are:

a) Students must attend all of the classes including lectures, tutorials, face to face learning
and blended learning. Students will be barred to final examination if the attendances are
less than 80% of the contact hours.
b) Students should follow the rules and regulations stated by the university.
c) Students must be properly attire when attending the classes.

4.

Define whistle-blower.
One who is reveals the wrongdoing and illegal activities in an organization to the higher
authority or to people who in charge.

5.

Watch the documentary entitled Challenger The Untold Story and answer the following
question:

a)

Do you regard Boisjoly as a disloyal employee or a heroic whistle-blower? Why?

I think Roger Boisjoly is a heroic whistle-blower because he had tried to warn his college
and his employer about the O-Ring problem and the catastrophic danger and determined
to postpone the launch of space shutter but his employer did not listen to him and still
approve the launch.

d) Did Morton Thiokol treat Boisjoly fairly? Why, or why not? Explain.
I think Morton Thiokol as the employer did not treat Boisjoly fairly because Boisjoly had
tried warn the problem before and had no respond from the management side, until the
critical moment, the day of space launcher. He only told the truth about the accident to
the commission.
e) Which specific parts of an engineering code of ethics applicable to the situations faced by
Morton Thiokol engineers?
The specific parts of an engineering code of ethics is the rules of practice, where an
engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public. If the
engineers judgement is overruled under certain circumstances that endanger life or
property, they need to notify their employer or authority as may be appropriate.

f) Describe three different responsibilities (obligation, blame and role) by using examples
based on the videos shown.

Obligation responsibility
Roger Boisjoly contributed all his skills and knowledge to make sure the space
launcher is safe and ready to go. He always checked on the O-Rings where it is
the most crucial part and tried his best to postpone the launcher due to
malfunction of the O-Rings.

Blame responsibility
NASA and Morton Thiokol need to be blame as they make a wrong decision at
the critical moment. Boisjoly had warned them beforehand, but no respond from

the Morton Thiokol. As Boisjoly is expert in the O-Rings, they should listen to
him and postpone the space launcher.

Role responsibility
Morton Thiokol management should listen to Boisjoly warning about the O-Rings
problem as he had notice them before. At the meeting, they should make the
decision to postpone the launcher as the problem can cause the major problem and
endanger life of the astronauts.

g) Aboard the shuttle for this flight was the first teacher in space. Should civilians be
allowed on what is basically an experimental launch vehicle?
Yes because the teacher are the role model to their students. They can tell their students
about the space exploration and encourage them to study hard and become an astronaut.
Although the launch vehicle is basically in the experiment, the teacher as civilian know
the risk of the flight and the success of the space launch before prove the launch is safe.
