Side Thrust
ASCE 7: The lateral force on the crane runways beam with electrically power trolleys shall be calculated as
20% of the sum of the rated capacity of the crane and the weight of the hoist and trolley.
The lateral force shall be assumed to act horizontaly at the tracction surface on a runway beam, in either
direction perprndicular to the beam, and shall be distributed with due regard to the lateral stiffness of the
runway beam and supporting structure.

direction parrallel to the beam.

Seismic Loads
ASCE 7: The empty weight of the component should be considered in the seismic mass.
The Designer should carefully evaluate the location of the crane.

Serviciability Criteria for Frames Supporting Cranes


1) Pendant operated cranes: Frame drift to be less than the height to the runway elevation over 100, based
on 10yr winds or the crane lateral load on the bare frame.
2) Cab operated cranes: Frame drift to be less than the height to the runway elevation over 240 and less than
2in, based on 10yr wind or crane lateral loads.
3) All top running cranes: Relative inward movement of runways toward eachother to be less than 1/2in
shortening of the runway to the runway dimention. This displacement would be due to vertical static loads.
4) All top running cranes: Relative outward movement of runways away from eachother to be not more than
an increse of 1in in the dimention between crane runways.
