Bearing function

Bearing pads are used ex tensively in bridge structure - P re - stressed and P re - cast concrete buildings. ORF Bearings are manufactured from
premium quality neoprene/natural rubber. All the bearing pads are manufactured in compliance to standards like AAS HTO, B S 54 00, EN-1 3 3 7 , DIN
4141 etc, hardness ranging from 50 Shore A to 7 0 Shore A. Upon, request, speciall y designed bearing pads for non- standard application can
also be provided, including testing and certification.

Bridge decks supported by piers are susceptible to damage due to vehicle movement and heat expansion. The primary function of E lastomeric
Bearing Pads is to provide a connection to control the interactions of loading and movements between parts of a structure, usuall y between
superstructure and substructure. Bearing pads prov ide a uniform transfer of load from beam to sub- structure.

IntrOduction

The inner reinforcing steel plates are steel grade ASTM A36 or
steel of minimum equivalent elongation at break.
The minimum thickness of the plates used is 2mm.

inner Reinforcing plates

We follow AASHTO LRFD and AASHTO M25 1 standards for

material specification bearing pad designs. B ut at the same
time, we are not restricted to any standard and based on
the enquiry specification, we follow all other standards like BS
5 400 , E N 133 7 etc.

Elastomer Used:

Design of the bearing pads results in achieving the sizes, which would be stable under the specified loads,
translation, and rotations of the given axes.

Bearing pads are designed as per AASHTO L RFD Bridge Design Specifications- 20 07 . The design rule is based
on the assumption that rubber is a v iscoelastic material, the deflection of which, under compressive loads, is
influenced by its shape. Reinforcing plates in the bearings are chemicall y bonded to the elastomer to prevent
any relative movement.

ORDGVDQGGHIOHFWLRQVRQDEHDULQJSDG

DESIGN

LAMINATED ELASTOMERIC BEARING PADS

Bearing pads can also be reinforced w ith cotton duck fabric, which is commonl y known as cotton duck pads (CDP). C DP are known to be quite stiff
and to have large compressive load capacity. Because of this great stiffness, the rotational capacity and translational movements of CDP has
been severely limited. The below sizes are nominated as per the AAS HTO standards and calculations :

Cotton Duck Pad

Laminated elastomeric bearing pads can accommodate movement in any direction and rotational movement of any axis by elastic deformation.
They are sually used where bridges are susceptible to high loading, high translation and rotations. Alternate layers of steel and rubber are
vulcanised together to attain the desired load bearing capacity. Laminated bearings can be either rectangular or circular as per the requirement
at the abutments.

Steel Reinforced

These are designed for simple vertical loads for prefabricated structures.

Plain Elastomeric Bearings

These are designed for bridges to absorb vertical, horizontal, and rotational loads.
These loads are dispersed across the fully embedded steel plates.

Laminated Elastomeric Bearing Pads

ELASTOMERIc
BEARING PADS

These are designed for multidi rectional translation movements with respect to the area available on the
abutment. P TF E combined w ith stainless steel provide frictionless contact surfaces to allow for the various
horizontal movements. The elastomeric bearing pad is designed specifically for the application.

SLIDING BEARING PADS (FRICTIONLESS BEARING PADS)

These are designed for unidirectional movement. The bottom load plate is vulcanised to the elastomer, forming
a solid unit, while the top plate has built-in guides. Anchor rods are provided and the elastomeric bearing is
custom designed for the application.

GUIDED ELASTOMERIC BEARING PADS

Rotation may occur on any axis and is accommodated by deformation of the elastomeric pad. Pot bearings are
fixed against all translations unless they are used w ith a PTF E sliding surface. The pad is deformable but almost
incompressible and the pot bearing has large reserve capacity against vertical loads.

Pot bearings are special types of bearing pads for taking larger loads, translation and rotation in confined
areas. Pot bearings are often regarded as suitable for use when bridge bearing rotations are too large.

bearings:

G U IDE

DOW EL L P IN

PTF E

ORF Spherical Bearings are designed to transmit vertical forces in the bridge sub- structure and to facilitate rotations by means of convex top
plate and concave lower part. The flat sliding surface between the top of the calotte and a sliding plate accommodates longitudinal and transverse
movements. Guide bars and a restraining ring are used to transmit horizontal forces. Depending on whether the bearing is fixed, guided or free
sliding, it accommodates vertical loads, horizontal forces, rotations and longitudinal or transverse movements.

PTFE and The Polished Stainless Steel Interface

The PTFE, along with the Polished Stainless Steel Interface, provides a low friction
on
surface, facilitating the horizontal movement requirements of the bearings.

the shear pin is reduced from the total area of the Disc.

The Polyurethane Disc

The Pol yurethane Disc in the Bearing accomodates very high vertical design
loads, at the same time maintaining its ability to provide rotation in both
longitudinal and transverse di rections. The size and geometry of the disc

Disc Bearings have been extensi vel y used on rail road bridges as well as highway bridges. The Disc Bearing
w ith its Pol yurethane Disc element gives a cushioning effect, durability and is designed to handle the excessive
live loads, often present in railroads. The Polyurethane elements in the Disc Bearings posses good fatigue
resistance properties, gi ving the Disc Bearings advantage over the Pot Bearings when subj ected to excessive
cyclic loading. ORF Disc Bearings meet the ex tensi ve and stringent requi rements of railroad industr y guidelines.

The ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is used for small movement expansion j oints, in deck of
parkings, precasted structures and other types of concrete structures.

Usage

The ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is an extruded, neoprene rubber material.
When compressed into a gap, this system provides an excellent sealing against the expansion
and contraction.

Product

2) The expansion j oint seals must be properl y sized for the j oint gap opening. Installation: The ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is
installed by first apply ing a thin layer of lubricant cum adhesi ve to the side walls of the expansion j oint gap. Then, the seal is compressed into the
j oint gap opening.

1) Joint openings to receive the ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System must be clean, dry, sound, relatively smooth and free of voids, ridges,
and sharp proj ections.

Procedure of Installation

Performance of the ORF Seal Expansion Joint System is closely in line w ith the deck movement. Maintaining close tolerances is essential to the
success of the expansion j oint system, and this system should only be used in areas where small movements are expected.

Exemptions

The seal is compressed into place, prov iding a relatively flat profile surface that reduces tripping hazards and the collection of debris in the j oint.

The ORF Strip Seal Expansion Joint System consists of a rubber gland, mechanically tightened between two steel edge members and provides a superior
watertight proofing system. The design of the ORF Strip Seal System can easily accommodate the high loads of vehicular traffic while effectively sealing
joints in bridges and structures with very high movements. ORF Strip Seal Systems can be manufactured to accomodate a variety of field configurations
along with multidirectional movements. The ORF Strip Seal has been engineered so that the Chloroprene Seal can be inserted either prior to or after the
securing of the steel shapes to the superstructure. Machined Steel shapes maximize Seal install ability and minimizes manufacturing tolerance.

All exposed surface is efficiently protected for harsh weather condition and heavy traffic load. Control system is easily maintainable. All the joints follow the AASHTO LRFD,
BS EN standards

The movements between these modular beams are effectively controlled by the control box developed by the Ocean Rubber Factory. Ocean Modular joints movement range
starts from 160mm total to 1120mm total,

A modular expansion joint uses the principle of dividing the bridge gap in to smaller gaps by using small modular beams. These beams are effectively sealed using a water
tight neoprene sealant glands.

quality control

The exclusive in-house laboratory is equipped with computerized facilities to test the properties of rubber according to ASTM, BS and other international
standards. The laboratory plays a crucial role in implementing quality as well as developing new products. Test certificates are issued on request.

Laboratory Testing

Rubber is compounded in internal mixers ; quality is monitored round the clock by continuousl y testing samples for thei r physical properties and
chemical characteristics. Every ingredient is checked and monitored regularl y; in- process inspection is also conducted at various stages of
production, during performance testing and while the final inspection is carried out. ORFs products are certified to meet the most demanding
requi rements of civ il construction, oil and gas, infrastructure, marine and militar y applications.

The rubber quality control department at ORF has highl y qualified personnel equipped with the most modern testing equipment to ensure quality ot
ever y stage of production. The function of the quality control starts from the inspection of incoming raw material and continues through the various
stages of production, until the final finished product moves out of the company. The department is highly dedicated to ensuring the product quality
satisfies customer requi rements.

32

33

Our test press capacity is 200 0 TON vertical load and 800 TON horizontal load respectively. On request we may increase the press capacity by
adding ex tra j acks.

ORF Pot Bearings are randoml y load - tested to the required vertical and horizontal combined design loads at serv iceability load state ( SL S) on
each batch of bearing production, for conformance to the requested specification as an added check measure. I n addition, all material components
are checked against the final test certification reports submitted by the suppliers for compliance with thei r performance properties. P lease note
that all final manufacturer s certificates can be made available upon request from the client.
