Main skills in writing
Punctuation marks are always used according to the meaning you want to convey.

A. Steps- (Full stop, Question marks, examination marks.


B. Question marks
Direct Questions (Its this your Home?)
Indirect Questions (Are you? Going?
Rhetorical questions. They come
C. Exclamation marks
It refers to the intonation of a command

Eg: Come here!

D. Colon (:)
The commonest function is to introduce a specification and Quotations.

Ex:- D I have three reasons to live : Family friends and food,

E. The Semicolon (;)


It joints independent clauses in a sentence
Ex; languages are not invented ; they grow with our need for expression .
F: The comma (,):
This is to joint co-ordinate elements and used as a link between independent
clauses that are being joined by parataxis

Eg:- a) the urisis was pask, the are favorable S.N. Adams

G.The dash:- (-)


Is a stronger pause than comma and less formal than a semicolon colon and
parentheses.
Eg- (a) He came- finally

H. Apostrophe:- (‘)
i) It’s used to show possession
ii) for plural nouns ending in ‘s’ and after the S’

Eg: Girl’s School


iii) to show contraction :- He Will – He’ll
H. Quotation marks (“ “)
.Are used with direct quotation and words which have a special sense
Eg: she gets angry 15 times is day. She has a “rare” temper (Special sense)
J Hypher:- (-)
Is used to separate compound words and to indicate division of works when
changing hyphens are also used when word is spelt out in written composition

Eg: A-F-F-E-C-7.
K. Parenthesis ( ) and Brackets [ ]
Parenthesis is used to separate a word or construction that may or may not be
grammatically related to the rest

Eg: i) Even those who do their words any where (like journalists)
ii) This area [ he said laughingly] is not bad.

L. Ellipsis:- ( …)
It is a series of 3 or 4 dots it’s never 5 or 6. It implies that something has been left out and
is usually used in quotations

Eg. “ Dante is….. a great poet”

M. Diacritics
Diacritics is special mark placed above, below or through a letter to show special
pronunciation that the sound of a letter gives.

N. Underlining
It is used to represent what would in print be in italics like titles of books, files ,
paintings poems, songs and plays.

O. Using capitals:-
The first and last words of literacy titles should be capitalized as all words in between
except articles, prepositions and conjunctions

Eg: a) The well of the wild.

Conclusion :- These are all the punctuation marks which helps us to make our listing a
perfect thing
