Two misguided brothers stormed the publishing offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris early this year, killing 11 people and injur- ing 11, Weeks earlier, a gunman took hostages in an Australian café, The standoff ended when police stormed the building, kill- ing the assailant. Two hostages also died. In Denmark, a gunman shot and killed two people at a fo- rum before shooting several more outside a nearby synagogue. Even our neighbors to the north in Canada witnessed a soldier killed by a crazed gunman who then stormed their nation’s Parliament building before being shot. ‘Could such an attack happen in America? Even notoriously anti- gun politician Sen. Dianne Fein- stein thinks so. “ think there are sleeper cells not only in France but certainly in other countries and, yes, in our own,” CNN and The Wash- ington Times reported. “This calls, for vigilance.” A January poll also been a fan of f needle on a cause. Person ar mot 5s, in our world just to move showed that “65 percent of Amer- icans believe it is at least some- what likely that an attack” in the United States will occur. So what can we do as citizens to be vigilant and ensure our families and ourselves are safe? Both Rob- ert Sadowski’s “Survive a Terror Attack” (pg. 16) and Dick Jones’ “Essential Training for Concealed Carry” (pg. 52) offer great insights to help you be prepared for just such an event, Most experienced trainers wise- ly warn against ever engaging an armed attacker during an active shooting if escape is an option. As private citizens, most of us lack the training, skills and resources to come out on top in such a situation, But if you find yourself with no chance for escape, that gun you carry could mean the difference between survival and becoming a statistic. I personally don't want to be a statistic, Bice. I was thrilled to see on the cover of the February issue the 454 Casull, a real man’s gun. I was equally pleased to read the revolver- heavy piece inside about “The Most Powerful Handguns in the World.” Thave shot all of those calibers at one time or another either for fun, or for hunting, and I never get over the devastating stopping power these handguns can deliver. There isn’t a semi-auto that can compare, —Wilson Lawry, via email Or Go Home While | find the discussion about big bore handguns interesting, their ap- plication in most real world situations seems limited. They are too big for concealed carry, and other than hunt- ing, they can’t be much fun to shoot. —machineman67, via emall GUN DIGEST DIGITAL. Machine Gun Theme Park If Disney World’s Frontierland Shoot in’ Arcade seems a bit tame, don't fear. You can head over to Machine Gun America, Orlando, Fla.’s newest theme park and pull the trigger on the real thing. Unlike Disney's shooting ar cade, the guns at MGA not only shoot real bullets, and lots of them, but they also keep shooting as long as you pull the trigger. Visitors can choose between a va riety of firearms, including revolvers, semi-auto pistols, shotguns and lever action rifles. The real draw, however, is the selection of full-auto rifles. You can shoot an AK-47, a Saiga 12-gauge automatic shotgun, an M4 or an MP5, among other selections. Even bet ter, you can squeeze off hundreds of rounds in a variety of “experiences.” Want to go toe-to-toe with a group of bandit cowboys? Sign up for the west em shootout. Zombie killers can take aim at the undead, There's even an ex- perience just for women. “It’s mostly about the firearms relat. ed to cach experience,” says Wes Doss, director of training and safety. Shooters stand at the firing line and shoot at targets much like at any other indoor shooting range, he adds. The live-fire areas are open to anyone over and a qualified range safety officer accompanies each group. Shooters are not allowed to bring their own guns to the facility, though. Billed as Orlando's first “Auto- matic Adrenaline Attraction,” the 13,000-square-foot facility also has laser-training simulators that use real guns without live ammunition. Al though it’s new, Doss says business has been brisk. He's seeing a high number of husbands and wives and even single, college-aged women. Sen. Frank Niceley’s bill was cheered by gun storeowners and shooters, but had not been assigned to a committee at press time. Louisiana and Mississippi have similar measures. Colorado's new gun laws are back in the spotlight now that Republicans have taken control of the State Legis lature. Republicans aim to overturn a law that requires background checks for sales between private gun owners and one that bans magazines that hold ‘more than 15 rounds. Both laws were enacted in response to a mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. Opponents of the new laws say they do nothing to prevent crime. Two U.S. Congressmen authored a bill that would ban the sale, importation, manufacture, transfer and ownership ‘of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The Utah State Legislature is doing just that. “I's proof not only that Utah is a very pro-gun state, but that our legis- lature has a good working relationship with the state's firearms manufactur 1s,” says program director and Utah, Gun Safety Council board member ler emy Roberts This year’s. commemorative fire arm will be an AR-15 made by Orem, Utah's ‘Tegra Arms. The rifle is covered with a Cerakote finish and has a white and gray beehive pattern on it A honeybee, the state insect, is etched into the stock, along with the phrase “vox populi” (Latin for “voice of the people” and the Utah state motto). It’s the first time a long gun has been chosen since the program started five years ago. You'll need a rock solid bench, a gun vise like a Caldwell Lead Sled and, ideally, an assistant. First, center the cross hairs on the bull’s-eye, se- cure your gun in the vise, making sure the crosshairs remain on the bull’s-eye and then shoot one round, If your gun moved after the shot, simply move it back to its original posi tion so the crosshairs are back on the bull’seye. As you look through the scope, have your assistant gently dial the windage and elevation knobs so the crosshairs move to the ex act point of impact from the first shot. Two people were killed during the in- cident after police stormed the busi ness in an effort to rescue the hostages. The horrific rampage at Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, France, this Janu- ary by two men armed with AK rifles resulted in the slaughter of 12 people and the wounding of 20 others—all for publishing satirical cartoons of AL lah. In Ottawa, Canada, Parliament's sergeantat-arms retrieved a pistol from a locked box and killed a threat in the form of a lone gunman, For a CC holder caught up in an ac- tive shooter situation, training experts like Adam Painchaud, senior director at SIG Academy, suggest you look for a way to escape, rather than engage, in order to live to see another da “If you are with family and friends, mission number one is to get them and yourself to safety,” Painchaud says. Breaking contact and getting to safety may not be an option, however. “Only if you are boxed in,” Pain. chaud says, “then you need to deal with it accordingly.” A CC holder with a Ruger LCP or J-frame going up against a shooter or shooters with a rifle or shotgun can get themselves in grave danger quickly. In an active shooter situation more than, likely you have little time to take cov er, let alone time to gear up. ““More than likely the tool you will have on you,” explained Painchaud, “will be a personal protection gun designed for close encounters.” A compact or subcompact with limited ammunition capacity is perfect for self-defense, but is not a match for an assailant or assailants with long arms. Even law enforcement (LE) must often. operate in defense mode, responding to situations as they arise. ‘A woman runs into the protection of the police after boing taken hostage at a Sydney, Australian cafe. 4? Pho Get Out Of The Situation Like Painchaud, all of the trainers in. terviewed for this story recommend the first course of action be to get out of the situation. There are factors against a CC holder fighting back. Two key Issues stand out: lack of training and inadequate tools. “The important thing is to get train. ing so you are prepared,” says Ken Campbell, a retired 35-year deputy sheriff, Special Response ‘Team Com. mander and two-term county sheriff, as well as a 20-plus-year Gunsite In structor. “Thinking ‘this won't happen. to me’ is tantamount to putting your head in the proverbial sand.” You have a spare tire, a flashlight in the house in case the power goes, so prepare for a lethal encounter because bad things can and will happen to you. “Plan for a lethal event,” added ‘Campbell. “How you respond depends ‘on how you train.” The second thing all trainers agree on is for a CC holder to know their state's gun laws on self-defense and to have an attorney lined up. Having an attorney is like having insurance. Just like homeowner's insurance is used in ‘case of flood, fire or wind damage, an attorney will guide and represent you as any situation is legally sorted out. Law enforcement is trained to deal with high stress situations—the noise, screams, blood and confusion. Regular Joe Citizen with a concealed carry per mit, who has perhaps taken a concealed ‘arty course and maybe a beginner pis- tol shooting course, does not have the level of training to thwart a situation where there is an active shooter. In an active shooter situation, noth- ing is black and white. Good guys can easily look like bad guys and vice-ver- sa, A situation could evolve in, say, a shopping mall, where you are’ boxed in with no avenue to escape. How do you know if that person with a gun is ‘an off duty police officer caught up in the situation just like you? If you en- ‘gage a threat in a crowded area, how do you ensure a missed shot does not hit an innocent bystander? Shooting In Progress When first responders arrive, thi have may little-to-no information about MARCH 2038 Ganges jar quite simply lack the active shooter situations like police. Davis Barae Photo the situation. All they know is there is a shooting in progress. “If you have the ability to talk to 911 or if someone in your group can be on the phone with 911, relay all the information you can to the authori ties,” explains Painchaud. The more information law enforcement has, the better they can handle the situation. Tell them details: “I am a white, bald guy wearing a blue hoodie and sneak- ers near the pretzel stand.” SIG Acad. emy actually offers a training course called Active Shooter Response that teaches tactics for a first responder or a CC holder caught in the crossfire. “No one ever knows what the police know or don’t know when they ar- rive,” says Sara Ahrens, former patrol sergeant, SWAT team supervisor and firearms instructor. When LE does ar- rive, their mindset is hard to predict “Did the police happen upon the situ: ation, did the concealed carry holder request somebody call the police or did a passerby call it in?” she asks Ahrens’ best advice to a CC holder is to remain cognizant of their surround. ings. “Tunnel vision and auditory ex- clusion easily happen in high-stress situations, Watch for the police to ar rive and immediately identify yourself as a concealed carry holder,” she ad- vises. LE will then tell you what to do and how to do it. Massad Ayoob states it plainly: “Obey the commands of the off cer. Expect to be disarmed. The cop doesn’t know who’s who.” Ayoob is director of the Massad Ayoob Group, a 18 | Gandigess former LE officer, firearms expert and. has written numerous books on armed encounters, including his recently re- leased, Deadly Force: Understanding Your Right to Self Defense, published by Gun. Digest books. Shootrite Firearms Academy Direc tor Tiger McKee recommends, if pos sible, to have your weapon holstered when LE arrives. “If that’s not a good option, then you need to comply with their demands immediately. No trying to explain. When law enforcement says to drop the weapon, you drop it. No setting it down gently. Keep your mouth shut, do what they tell you,” McKee advises. In many instances, the only thing LE knows upon arrival is that there are shots fired, adds McKee, and will tend to treat everyone as a threat until things are sorted out. Firearms training should be part of every gun owner's plan to protect, themselves and their families. Any rep utable gun training course should not only teach safe firearms handling and shooting techniques, but also what you as an armed ter an incident where you are forced to unholster your firearm. When the dust has settled, and law enforcement officials have sorted out the situation, then it comes to answering questions “That's a whole ‘nother subject,” quipped Mckee. I decided, instead of maxing out a credit card, I was going. to build the highest capacity tactical shotgun I could with components that were readily availabl In my gun vault sat a lightly used Mossberg 500 12-gauge Turkey Thug ‘edition with an LPA trigger, a 24-inch barrel, a six-round magazine tube and fiber-optic sights that came installed on the barrel. It was as good a place to start as any First, had to decide how to increase the six-round capacity. Since this ‘would be a tactical pump, tube exten sions were not an option. remembered once looking into an aftermarket kit called the Sidewinder made by Knox with detachable box magazines and being disappointed that it had been discontinued. After a ‘quick search, I found that a 40-year- ‘old company, Adaptive Tactical (AT), was making a new version of the kit for Mossbergs called the Sidewinder Venom, It was the same basic idea as the original: The magazine tube of the shotgun is replaced with a new tube that has a mag well positioned in front ‘of the receiver, which feeds into the action from an external magazine. 1 liked it because it doesn't mess with the internal operation of the shotgun, other than rendering one of the gun’s ‘two shell stops unnecessary. The receiver accepts both five-round box and 10-round drum magazines holding 12-gauge, 2 3/4-inch shells. Currently, Adaptive Tactical makes 10-round box mags that are a bit ‘cheaper than the 10-round drum, but quite long. The kit comes in a variety of colors, and you can buy it pre-installed on several shotguns with or without a stock from AT. Already having decided to do everything myself, | ordered the lack kit to match the gun, without a stock. I'd deal with that later. The kit takes some time and pa- tience to work with, and one has to be willing to completely disassemble the shotgun in order to attach the new ac- tion bars that are affixed to the slide. Because the mag well is welded to the replacement magazine tube, when it's screwed into the receiver for the first time, it may not line up perfectly at 6 ofelock. In that case, metal must be removed from the end of the new mag tube in an extremely even manner, My kit came with a cylinder file that would gradually strip metal from the inside of the receiver to create more room. My tube stopped turning with the mag well at 8 o'clock, meaning I had to re. move enough steel on the tube and the receiver to rotate the tube almost another full turn, It took some time and patience, but it was doable—and was done. Form And Function With the kit installed and function- ing, it was obvious the next original component to go would be the 24- inch barrel. After shouldering the gun, it was clear that a shorter, adjustable stock was in order as well. The posi tioning of the kit’s mag well moves the new slide and its range of motion. about 4 inches forward, meaning a shooter's left arm must be extended further away from the body than nor mal to operate the action. With the full-sized polymer stock that came on my shotgun, it was quite awkward and uncomfortable to hold for an extended period of time. The top of the Moss berg's receiver came tapped for a rail and it would have been plain irrespon- sible to leave it empty. Once a rail was in place, I installed a small Cabela's Tactical Reflex Sight that I pulled off my turkey gun. My new stock came with a single-point sling attachment point, so T added the flexible Storm Sling XT from Blackhawk to help deal ‘with the gun’s weight, ‘Speed Test With the new stock and grip, heat shield, shorter barrel and sight in place, Ihad to see how quickly I could run 16 rounds through the gun: 10+1 with the drum and a mag change to the five-round box. After all, if the thing wouldn't cycle reliably with both magazines or didn’t shoot straight, I'd already supremely failed. Under ideal conditions, | was able to fire 16 rounds of 00 Buck in 20 sec ‘onds with the mag change. Not bad, and it was one round more than the ‘max capacity of the KSG that started the whole thing. And it was plenty accurate, taking out silhouettes eas ily at 25 to 40 yards with the red-dot sighted in. Fully extending the stock also made it a slick, easily controllable speed.shooter from the hip. Now, it isn’t perfect. My Franken: stein gun would feel like a steel club if laid side-by-side with the KSG, UTS-15, or any gun with more polymer than steel. With everything on board, a full 10-round drum and one round in the ‘chamber, the gun weighs in at about 12 pounds—not a lightweight by any means. And reaching the KSG’s ammo ‘capacity still required a mag change But was I happy with it? Most cer: tainly. Is it fun to shoot? Fill it full of birdshot and you could blast away all day. As a friend put it, “Shooting this thing makes me feel mean.” Is ita for- midable weapon for CQB situations? Absolutely Fight hundred rounds have been through the gun without a single fail- ure-to-fire (FTF) or jam, and neither magazine has given out on me. The kit also has the advantage of being com. pletely ambidextrous, as shells can be loaded into the drum in either direc tion, and the mag release is an AK-style lever located behind the mag well. The extra weight takes some getting used to, but it’s centered in the middle of the receiver, so maneuvering and aim. are neither clumsy nor awkward, especially with the sling. The Cabela's reflex sight was de signed for hunting and didn’t work in low light, so I eventually replaced it with the inexpensive but solid Ad- inced Micro Dot sight from Primary Arms. It has a variable intensity reticle and a quick release mount that would allow me to easily use the fiber optic red bead on the barrel if necessary. Attaching the flashlight that every tactical shotgun should have was a bit of a problem. The Venom kit, with an 18.inch barrel, doesn't provide any room at the front of the gun to attach a bracket or ral AT offers a forend for their kits called the Wraptor with a rail sec tion and tactical light, but it seemed too bulky, and I didn’t like the idea of moving the flashlight and red dot back and forth with the slide. Because of its small pro- file, it didn’t get in the way of the sight at all When it was over, the only remain. ing components from the or shotgun were the receiver and trigger group. To gain the full tactical advantage a shotgun offers in a self-defense situation, it takes a strategic game plan. hotguns have a long and success- ful history. The first use of the term shotgun dates back to the late 1700's, The military has used shot- ‘guns extensively. They were popular with cavalry on both sides during the War Between the States, Germany filed an official compliant against the U.S. during WW. | for the use of “trench guns,” and both French and USS. forces used shotguns in the jungles of Vietnam. Almost every law enforcement agen- y issues “riot guns,” although ARs seem to be steadily replacing them, Ask homeowners what weapon they have for home protection and the answer was and usually is a shotgun. It is truly a versatile weapon, especially considering the wide variety of ammo available today. The key to shot- guns is setting one up for proper home defense and knowing how to use it well, Choose Your Action Shotguns come in all types, from single-shot and. double-barrel break tops, lever, bolt and pump ak tions to semi- and even full-auto, The most versa tile shotguns are pump actions. lot of the semi- auto guns are ammo sensitive; a pump gun works with reduced recoil rounds, “dragon-breath” flame throwing rounds, non-lethal rounds and, BY TIGER KEE of course, standard tactical and home defense loads. Single and double barrels will also work with the various rounds; you'll just have to learn to reload more efficiently. Rig It for Defense When it comes to setting up your home defense shotgun, a sling is mandatory. The sling for the shotgun Is like the holster for your pistol. I prefer a simple two-point sling, which can be looped. around my neck for a hands-free mode. “Tacti- cal” slings, the term I use for anything that loops around the body, have their place, just keep in. mind in the middle of the night when you're grabbing the gun there may not be time to loop it up. Practice some without having the sling looped around your body. The standard front sight is a round bead. For fighting we need a sight that’s quick to pick up in the daylight as well as when It’s dark. Again, there are a lot of options. My favorite is the XS brand sights. They offer replacement front sights, and sets with front and rear sights. Adjustable sights are good, especially if you're shooting. slugs for accuracy. Another point you need to consider is the shotgun's “ready” mode. Again there are a lot of terms used, but one mode would be with it fully loaded, with a full mag tube and a round in the chamber, t's ready for use, but one factor to consider is that a lot of shot- guns have a free-floating firing pin. Every time you load the shotgun there is a possibility of a “slam-fire,” or firing a round as the bolt chambers it. This also means that, with a round in the chamber, a sharp, sudden thump, like a car rear-ending your vehicle or hitting a large hole or speed bump can possibly cause a round to discharge from the shotgun, Another ready mode would be hav- ing the magazine tube loaded, but with no round in the chamber. To make it ready to fire, you have to chamber a round. This takes time and must be a habit, so if this is your mode, then part of retrieving the shotgun includes chambering a round. Initial training and certification, followed by years of advanced and instructorlevel schools, were attended using this cartridge. Match ammunition was available, pricing was reasonable and it was a pretty versatile round. Recoil is manageable, and it was viable out to 800, even 1,000 yards, depending on the rifle and shooter. Even so, my curious nature always had me searching for a better round, One of my first custom rifles was chambered in .300 Win, Mag. It was ‘great for competition and long-range training while leaving nothing on the table when deployed. Recoil, even with lighter loads, was noticeable. Moving further up in size, the .338 Lapua Mag was next, Able to stretch shots out to 1,200 yards with ease, it had the same recoil as a 300 Win. Mag. with a few ‘material disadvantages. Cost was the big issue, as the price of rounds even are on the high end, and it was a bit much for typical po- lice ranges, making it a “second rifle.” I wanted a round that could be used on duty and when hunting, yet that would be viable at truly long range on paper and soft targets, too, Everything | tried failed in one realm or another until the 6.5mm cartridge arrived. My introduction came through friend and rifle builder Mike Brown from Mike's Gun Sales and Service in Texas. He kept trying to get me to shoot one of his .260 Rem. bolt rifles. Finally giving in and testing it for an article, it was impressive. Recoil was minimal, accuracy was astounding and it had roughly the same trajectory asa 300 Win, Mag, Soft targets and paper out to 1,200 yards was totally doable. The 6.5 Creedmoor Factory match ammunition for the .260, however, was limited to nonexis- tent, and sadly still is. Agency require- ‘ments calling for factory ammunition made the rifle a no-go for duty purpos- es. And then, my longtime relation- ship with Hornady brought the 6.5 Creedmoor into play. Dave Emery at Hornady designed the 6.5 Creedmoor as a multi-purpose 6.5mm cartridge using standard .308 chamber pressures. Working with. Dennis DeMille at Creedmoor Sports, ‘they wanted a factory loaded round that would compete well in High Power matches. Using the .308 base cartridge, it sits between the .260 Rem. and 65x47 Lapua. A tad shorter, it loads long bullets well in 308-sized magazines. Purpose built for match rifles, the load was accurate. Once it ‘was proven in competition, the car tridge has become a favorite for a lot of shooters, yours truly included. Tactical Precision For most of my shooting career, duty application as a police officer has been my prime concern. It prompted exten- sive testing using the 6.5 Creedmoor for duty use, and initial testing with factory 140-grain Hornady AMAX in a custom-built gun yielded sub-quarter- inch groups holding .5 MOA out to 1,200 yards—accuracy suitable for any uty application. But was it up to the challenge where barrier penetration is concerned. It’s a critical requirement for any duty-related task. Many agencies use the 168-grain AMAX (TAP) in their 308 duty rifles as a primary round, so the 140-grain AMAX was chosen for comparison first. Side-by-side testing showed no appreciable difference. Deflection, spalling and accuracy were identical ‘through glass (building and auto) and ‘most anything else a police marks- ‘man would shoot through. Recoil, especially suppressed, was less, ‘making second round hits easier. Flat- ter shooting, it required little holdover out to 300 yards 1 testing was Hunting Over the course of the last couple years, I have used several 6.5 Creed. ‘moor rifles to hunt hogs, rams and ‘even some smaller critters. For long: range varmint hunting, it is impres sive, allowing for hits at 1,000 yards and beyond. While many prairie dog hunts use smaller calibers, the 6.5 Creedmoor has held its own. Most of my hunting has been ac- complished using 20-inch barrels in AR-platform rifles. Having taken 250-pound hogs at 300 yards, it has plenty of knockdown at most practi ‘cal ranges, Recent testing and hunting with a Christensen Arms rifle was im. pressive to say the least. Mated to an OSS suppressor, it remained light yet held .5 MOA out to 500 yards. Load. ed with Doubletap 127-grain LRX, it took a nice ram with a single, clean shot. Hunters using the cartridge have found it to perform quite well on many game species across North America and Africa. Target and Competition Handloads in my first build yielded sub-.10.inch groups at 100 yards using Berger VLD bullets. Recent testing out of a Desert Tactical SRS was a tad under 20 inches. Testing at 1,200 yards with the same load (26-inch barrel) resulted Jn $-inch groups. From 1,000 yards and closer, it out performs the .308 in ev- ery case. Its capability for competition and target shooting is unquestioned. Is it the best for every situation? Few calibers are, but for the most part, the 6.5. offers something many specialty cartridges still do not—tfactory loads. Asan all around target shooter for pre- cision and tactical matches, this is an incredibly versatile round, Bottom Line In the last few years the 6. Creedmoor has proven to perform well in every as- pect of rifle shooting using factory am- ‘munition and excelling when it comes to handloading. It’s possible to take one rifle to work as a precision marks ‘man, hunt with it in the field and then, compete with it on the range. Whether shooting at SO yards or 1,200 yards, it will perform better than anything other than specialty cartridges designed for single purpose use. The next time you're in the mar. ket for one rifle that will do virtufally everything you want, look closely at the 6.5 Creedmoor. The end result is that you can use one upper and lower receiver and shoot 9mm, 223, .300 Blackout and 7.62x39. Conversion from one caliber to another takes less than 90 seconds, Conversion from .223 to .300 Blackout takes just 20 seconds. ‘To change barrels, the user flips the safety bail open, pulls the retention block off the locking arms and rotates them 90 degrees outboard. The barrel then comes off the front of the receiv. er, Reinsert a different caliber barrel, rotate the locking arms back in, re- place the locking arms, drop the reten- tion block back in place and snap the safety bail back, and you've changed calibers and are ready to go. When converting from .223 or .300 Blackout to 9mm or 7.62x39, the user also changes the bolt cartier and mag. azine well. To change from one maga: zine well to another, simply pull down, on the trigger guard and press the With Brown Bear 125 soft points, magazine release button. All this can be accomplished in about 90 seconds with no tools. Advantage: AR-15 ‘The advantage of the 7.62x39 over the 5.56 NATO round is obvious for certain situations, and the advantage ‘of the AR-IS over the AK series of firearms is similarly obvious. The AR platform allows for easy mounting of ‘optics, it offers the option of having a high-quality trigger system, the maga: zine drops at the push of the release, and there’s a much more user-friendly safety. There’s also an obvious advan. ‘tage to having one gun that can serve as an accurate medium-to-long-range 5.86 precision rifle with economical ammunition, switch to a heavy pen- ‘trating 7.62x39 round with low recoil or a short-range 9mm carbine using the same magazine as the operator's Glock pistol, and even a precision sub- sonic .300 Blackout round for use with a suppressor. ‘The former Top Shot TV star, Chris Cerino, has the complete set of cali bers, with all the barrels, bolt carti cers and magazines, all in a fitted case. Chris reports accuracy and flawless reliability from everything in the sys- tem, and my shooting of the 7.62 x 39 Hydra yielded simi lar results, For the test, | equipped the Hydra with Bushnell’s excel lent AR Optics 1-4 scope. The AR Optics line has features normally available on much more expensive scopes, and the 1-4 variable is probably the best choice of optic for short to mid-range use of an AR-IS. At a 1x setting, the scope provides the user with a less obstructed view than even the best of the reflex sights because the point of view comes from in front of the receiver. While reflex sights are touted for speed, consider that no one in 3-Gun competition uses them over an optical variable, The AR Optics scope I chose Is in second focal plane and uses a standard duplex reticle with small dots for reference on longer shots. There’s no illumination and no batteries or switches to fail. At 1x, it’s faster than a reflex sight, and zoomed up to 4x, it can utilize the excellent accuracy of the rifle. The 7.62x39 round isn’t known for accuracy, but the AR- 15 platform certainly is. While my test unit was more of a defensive carbine than a precision rifle, I was able to man: age more than acceptable accuracy for a defensive carbine. Five-shot, 100-yard groups were consistently under 2 MOA, with 125-grain Brown Bear soft points. For a defensive/pa: trol carbine, this is more than acceptable accuracy, far su- perior to anything you can get out of an AK and as good as most 5.56 patrol carbines and a lot of hunting bolt actions, The Hydra 15 has a standard service-grade trigger and that’s a great trigger for the patrol carbine configuration of my test gun, but any trigger your heart desires is a simple installation and a fistful of dollars away. Everything in life is a compromise, and the modular two-piece lower receiver that allows changing magazine wells does come at the cost of having a lock-back feature on the bolt. The machining that allows for the magazine well change occupies the same space as the bolt lock, so the Hydra owner will lose this, feature, In stock form, the recoil of the Hydra in 7.62 con. figuration is still mild, a bit more than a $.56, but still com- fortable for anyone. There's no doubt in my mind that the Hydra is the most versatile rifle in production because it will accommodate the popular 22 rimfire uppers, or any other AR 15 upper for that matter, creating a rifle that has almost no limitations other than the owner's ability to purchase upper receivers. Opera- tion was flawless with both Remington and the Brown Bear steel-cased ammunition, and surprisingly, the Hydra shot better groups with 24 cents-per-round Brown Bear soft points than with much more expensive Remington brass-cased soft points. Apparently, this gun is designed! as a combat carbine and is engineered around low-priced steel-cased ammo, Thave no doubt the Hydra would be a more-than-ade- quate hunting rifle. Basi- cally, when the bullet passes over the first light sensor, its shadow starts a clock. Its shadow then passes over the second sensor, stopping the clock. The distance between the sensors is programmed into the chronograph, which converts time and distance into velocity. That’ it. All other functions and data results are done by software crunching bullet velocities. Chronograph light sensors can be quite finicky about light. Too much direct light can drown out a passing bullet's shadow, and too little light will fail to register the shadow at all. Outdoors, chronographs use light dif fusers—those triangles or curved arcs, you see above the chronograph itself —to soften direct light from the sun or bright clouds. For indoor range use, some chronographs have lights you can attach in place of the diffusers. One new chronograph uses magnetic instead of light, sensors, but has a few tradeoffs to consider (see sidebar). A bullet passes through the sensors, which mounts atop ‘the computerized unit to provide velocity and other fata, Author Photo Velocity = Pressure ‘To get right to the core of the matter, knowing your handload’s bullet veloc ity can prevent severe injury because, in conjunction with load book data, it can give you a good idea whether ‘or not the pressure generated by your load might be enough to eventually make your firearm come apart when you fire it. Knowing bullet velocity helps keep loads from generating too high of pressure. There is no ready and affordable way to directly measure the peak cham- ber pressure generated by a cartridge. However, measuring bullet velocity is an indirect method forestimating peak pressure. When a load data book says a load is “within SAAMI specifications” for pressure and then lists a powder ‘charge and bullet velocity as being the ‘maximum for a specific load, then you know you're theoretically within pres. sure limits as long as you don’t exceed that bullet velocity. “Theoretically, because there are other variables to take into account, such as the age and condition of your firearm, its sp chamber and bore dimensions, the thickness of your brass and more. That’s why the generally accepted practice Is to start below maximum, powder charges and work your way up, using a chronograph to measure bullet velocities. Consistency Checking bullet velocity is also a way to check the consistency of your handloads. An excep- tionally high or low velocity n or crimpiny some degree when you shoot a st brass from various makers), bad primers or even old powder, 11's also very useful for knowing how environ- mental temperature affects your ammunition, whether handloaded or “store-bought.” Tem- perature affects the burning rate of powder and the pressure it produces, so it’s quite likely that when you zero your rifle and ammo in the heat of a desert-like summer day, bullet impact on a target will not be to the same place when you hunt an early mountain in winter. nein CASE-GARD} BUYING A CHRONOGRAPH Justa as, ther pe pronograph, the get. Needing to know extreme spread is really a leftover from the days when it took a mathematician to calculate standard deviation; extreme spread was a kind of “cheat,” and we don’t really need it anymore, But chrono: graph makers include the function, T suspect, because shooters think if a chronograph doesn’t have it, its lack ing. To get an idea of the consistency of your loads, it’s better to look at the standard deviation, ‘Standard Deviation Knowing average velocity and ex- treme spread of a load is helpful, but it isn’t the whole picture. Again, bul let velocities imply—though don’t necessarily guarantee—whether or not chamber pressures are acceptable, and from a safety standpoint, that is a chronograph’s most important use to the handloader. Second to that in importance is the chronograph show. ing the standard deviation (SD) of a specific load, because the more a load deviates in velocity from one shot to the next, the less accurate it is, theo: retically and usually in practice. While extreme spread is the average differ ence between only the highest and lowest two shot velocities in a string SD takes into account the variance of all the individual shots in the string, so it’s more precise SD is actually a statistical method of measurement used in many appli- cations, and is based on the idea of the “bell curve” or “normal curve.” If it can be measured, it most likely can be plotted on a bell curve, whether it’s the population density of ants per acre, how many politicians it takes to screw In a light bulb, or the velocities of rockets or bullets It’s called a bell curve because of the shape of its line on a graph, and it il- lustrates the concept that most varia tion (about 70 percent) among what- ever is being measured occurs closest to the average, the peak of the curve. SD takes the velocities of your shots, ‘crunches the numbers more (mostly by squaring, multiplying and un. squaring them) and plots them on bell curve to give a more precise mea. surement. What's nice about SD is that we come up with a single, compara: tively small number indicating how much all the shot velocities in a string varied from the average. The smaller the number, the closer they are to the average, indicating your load is at least. consistent shot-to-shot, so if it isn't ac curate you've eliminated one possibil- ity as the problem, As in all statistical analyses, SD is a case of more is better. For accurate computations, 10 shots over the chro: nograph should be the minimum; the fewer the shots, the less reliable the results will b You could figure SDs using a calcu: lator, but why bother, unless you like doing math problems? Every modern chronograph aimed at Joe Handload- er’s wallet will compute SD at the push of a button. ‘One practical application of SD for handloaders is that any manufacturer can make a “bad” lot of primers deliv ering inconsistent ignition, resulting A high SD is an indication of primers being a likely cause of the problem if you are certain all your bullets, case prep and loading processes are consistent. Other Benefits It's kind of nice to know where a bullet will impact a target at various ranges because you can only zero a firearm to one specific distance at a time. Beyond being a piece of handloader safety equipment, chronographs will help you predict downrange bullet trajecto- ries. Once you know the initial veloc ity of a specific bullet, you can punch it into a ballistics program or reference it on a chart to know how to adjust your hold or sights to hit your target at extended ranges. Undersize lead bullets will cause in accuracy when hot powder gases flash. ing past them melt the lead, leaving lead deposits in the bore, They can also smear lead deposits in barrels when the bullet lube is inadequate and when pushed too fast. A chro. nograph will save you a lot of trial and-error troubleshooting time (and cleaning time) when loading cast lead bullets by eliminating one of those variables (velocity) For the cost of a few boxes of pre mium factory ammo, a basic chro. nograph adds to the pleasure of han dloading by helping troubleshoot problems. It's also cheap safety insur. ance. To be effec: tive, you must be completely comfortable with every aspect of putting your concealed carry gun. to use, You should be so familiar and comfort able that you can draw, shoot, clear malfunctions and reload without consciously thinking about, what you're doing. If you have to use conscious thought to accomplish these tasks, your ability to defend yourself is diminished, because as a con- cealed carry citizen, you only have the right to use deadly force when you literally fear for your life or the life of someone else, and fear almost always diminishes perform 52 | GunDigetiemguse MARCH 2015 Even low pressure situations like competing. in an organized shooting competition degrades the performance of most people. That stress level will be ratcheted up tenfold should your life be in danger. For the best performance, there’s no substitute for confidence, and regular practice _generates that level of confidence while develop: Ing the motor skills necessary for performanc under stress. ‘When you get in your car to drive to the gro: cery store, you know you have to step on the brake to allow the car to be shifted into drive. You don’t think about this process, it just hap: pens as a conditioned response to achieve the goal of making the car go forward. When you first learned how to drive, you had to consciously, think about the process of stepping on the brake before it could be shifted into drive. Most likely, you tried to shift into drive without applying the brake and had to correct the sequence. After enough repetitions, the act of stepping on the brake before shifting became a normal part of your driving routine—so much so that you weren’t even aware you were doing it. Had you been sitting in an open Jeep during those first days of learn ing to drive, and been charged by an angry grizzly bear, there's a strong chance you'd have tried to start the car and shift into drive without ap. plying the brake. Early in your driving career, your mind related the brake to stopping, and with the charging bear, your objective would be to go. There's a possibility the bear might have eaten, you when you didn’t shift into drive because you simply forgot to press the brake. This illustrates why, as an armed citizen, you must practice until operating your gun comes as naturally as driving your car. Achieving Top Performance ‘The best performance from humans always comes when we're using non- verbal or operational thought. Verbal thought is when we work our way through a process using a mental checklist, such as mentally checking off the act of pressing the brake before putting a car into gear. New shoot- ers must use a mental checklist in or- der to master the fundamentals. The sooner the new shooter shifts from mental-checklist thinking to condi tioned-response thinking, the sooner that shooter will progress. While its possible to shoot well using a mental checklist, it's not possible to. shoot well while shooting fast because our brains simply don’t run that fast when processing a mental checklist Operational thinking allows you to group sets of actions into one thought Command and allow fast response. In- stead of thinking grip, stance, breath, sight picture, trigger press and. fol low through, in checklist thinking, operational thinking just processes the thought, “shoot.” Eventually, by conditioning the shooter's response patterns, the process for firing a shot becomes: sweep jacket back, grip pis tol, bring weak hand close to body, draw pistol and bring it to horizontal, bring the pistol to eye level and re- . ‘To be properly prepared to defend yourself, you must be able to shoot fast and on-target under extreme stress. This Is why regular practice and training is s0 important. Aor Proto inforce grip with weak hand, extend pistol, align sights on target and fire if the threat continues. Practice and developing conditioned responses al lows grouping whole sets of actions into single responses, and this is why it’s so important to learn to do things the correct way and do them that way all the time. Proper practice doesn’t just involve the act of firing the shot. You can be a dead accurate shooter and still be total ly unprepared for defending yourself against a bad guy because being able to manipulate your gun up until the second you fire the shot is just as im- portant as accuracy when you fire the shot. Gear manipulation is as impor- tant as shooting. The acts of safe gun handling, accessing your gun, clearing a malfunction and going through the loading process are just as important as marksmanship. All these tasks must be ingrained into your process to the point they don’t require conscious ‘thought, and this should be done with your carty gun or with a gun that’s op: ‘rationally identical, For this reason, practice for the con- cealed carry citizen should be done in the same way that a person would fight back in the event of an attack ‘There's no doubt that simple shoot- ing practice improves your shooting skills. Competition is even more likely to improve skills because it stresses ac ‘curacy, speed or both, and because it adds a level of stress and performance anxiety to the equation. The action shooting games also teach the shooter how to deal with problems like mal. functions and handling complicated decisions while under the duress of time constraints. Developing Your Skills An example of this is something my friend and former Federal Air Marshal, Chris Cerino, experienced during the History Channel TV show, Top Shot. MARCH 2015 GunDiget engin | 83 Chris was shooting a double-action re. volver and a round failed to fire. Chris has extensive training with semi-auto pistols and most of his training work is training military, law enforcement and civilians with ‘semi-auto pistols. When the revolver failed to fire, Chris tried to tap-rack the gun. A tap-rack is the procedure of tapping the base of the magazine to make sure it’s seated and racking the slide to chamber a fresh round, Tap-racking a revolver does nothing since there's no maga. zine to seat in the butt of the grip and. no slide to work. When this happened, the show's host, Colby Donaldson, saw it and asked him, “Chris, did you just tap- rack a revolver?” Of course, he had. Chris was so conditioned to tap-rack when a gun failed to fire that the con- ditioned response was to tap-rack the revolver, even though all he had to do with a revolver was pull the trigger again. On a TV show, this Is a sour of entertainment; in’a life or death situation it could be deadly. A lot of training with equipment other than what you use can cause conditioned responses you don’t want. Choosing a quality instructor or training facility can be difficult be- cause everyone in the business is cer tain he’s ultimately qualified to share his vast knowledge. I once set up at a gun show with a group of young mili- tary looking guys on the next aisle Their booth was back to back with my booth and it featured videos of shooting scenarios with them mov- ing around in tactical clothing. The production quality of the videos was very good and these guys looked like young Navy SEAL Special Forces op: erators. If you're in close proximity to me, conversation will ensue, and I was shocked to find these guys weren’t law enforcement, past military or even, competitive shooters. They'd taken the NRA instructors classes for shot- gun, rifle and pistol and were setting up shooting classes with absolutely no practical experience at all. There are shooting instructors across the country who apply SWAT or mili- tary tactics to concealed-carry citizen situations and train citizens in these techniques. SWAT or military training simply doesn’t apply to an armed citi- zen, Citizens have no right to attack the bad guys. In no state I know can civilians use deadly force to detain, much less attack, a criminal Our odds of having a gunfight with multiple bad guys are similar to those of winning the Powerball lottery. Tac: tical training of this type might be fun, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that shooting at multiple targets from a speeding vehicle is suitable training for the concealed carry citizen, and ag Ses Eee Yai See tess Ba ae he Amv ’d advise a wide berth from someone ‘who tries to tell you otherwise. If you want to do Zombie training, that’s fine, but it doesn’t relate to concealed carry. In the Zombie apocalypse, I plan to carry my 3-gun rifle with a high-cap shotgun and a double-stack .45 for backup. That would be impractical for ‘concealed carry to say the least. ‘Two Paths To Follow There are two types of firearms train. ing—episodic training and immersion FROM, THE*SOURCE LifeStraw’ i: Personal water FILTER at™, PEEP SIGHTING SYSTEM, CC tet facet 15 no fan shooting if you can't hit the target! You can become a proficient shooter on your own with episodic training, but only if you learn to shoot prop: erly in the first place. This can be done through videos and text, provided you have the ability to analyze your own per- formance critically. Many people simply don’t seem to have this ability, and as a result, they aren’t able to recognize their shortcomings. and plateau at a point well below their potential. A better ‘method is to train with a capable instructor who can cri tique your problems and help you correct them, Practicing on your own will accelerate your progress, provided you don't fall back on your shortcomings when you're not un: der the watchful eye of a good instructor. Immersion training involves extended training over a full day or several days. This method will yield faster results, but unless you completely grasp the fundamentals and muscle memory involved, you'll likely regress later. The best way Is to begin with a period of immersion training and follow up with regular practice sessions and occasional episodes of training. Remember that many aspects of learning to shoot don’t need to involve live fire. Almost all national level shooting competitors dry fire and learn gear manipulation skills that don't involve live rounds. Concealed carry training should be done with the gun and holster or carry system you use every day. It should be done wearing the same kind of clothing you wear and be practiced both with winter and sum: mer clothes. He may convince you to change; you certainly won't convince him you're plan is solid While the average armed citizen is better equipped to survive a violent crime than an unarmed citizen, a properly trained armed citizen is much more likely to perform well when it’s a matter of life or death. In recent years, weapons like cane guns, smooihbore handguns, short- barreled shotguns made with a pistol grip and no buttstock and handguns with a forward vertical grip have been. Classified as “Any Other Weapon,” which remains a subcategory of weap- ons and firearms covered by the NEA registration requirements Individuals in the United States can currently possess legally registered NEA. items in approximately 33 states, and. the regulations within these states are not uniform with each other. Some states will allow the civilian ownership of machine guns, if they are registered under the provisions of the federal NEA requirements, but will not allow the possession of silencers or sound sup- pressors. Other states will allow ma- chine guns, but will not allow the pos- session of a “sawed-off” or short-barreled shotgun, With these many distine- tions in mind and, for this article, we are concerned only with legally registered machine guns ‘and their values, which have increased steadily since 1986. In some cases, these increases have been spectacular in their appreciation and in other cases more mundane, but in all cases signift- ‘cant equity appreciation has been seen ‘over the years since the national regis try of machine guns was capped on May 19, 1986, The National Registry Since all NFA information is cov- ered by the same rules governing Internal Revenue tax information, 1no one outside the confines of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives really Knows for sure how many le- gally registered machine guns ‘there are in the BATFE regis tuy. Its estimated that prior to April 1986 there were just ‘over approximately 100,000 registered machine guns Then, between the time the law was passed by Congress in April and signed into. law by President Reagan on May 19, 1986, an estimated additional 100,000 guns were added to the list. This period of time is known as the Machine Gun Rush. Since then some guns have been culled from the list because of improper registrations, but ‘most authorities believe there are just ‘over 200,000 legal machine guns in the registry, and most ofthese are available {for civilian ownership. Form 4 Registration Forms All machine guns eligible for civilian possession in the NFA registry are reg. istered on a BATFE Form 4. There are ‘other forms for other types of transfers but for our purposes here, and speak- ing solely for nondealer civilian own: ership, only those guns registered on a Form 4 are eligible for civilian owner ship.
