INSTRUCCIONES A LOS AUTORES

Actualidades Biolgicas (RAB; ISSN 0304-3584) es una
revista semestral especializada en la publicacin de manuscritos
inditos de alta calidad, resultantes de la investigacin en
ciencias biolgicas. La revista recibe manuscritos a lo largo
de todo el ao y publica los dos nmeros en los meses de
julio y diciembre. Ocasionalmente se publica un suplemento
especializado en un tema de importancia actual.

Cuando los trabajos presentados son resultado de investigaciones

sobre especies biolgicas en particular y se utilizaron
especmenes o ejemplares testigo (vouchers) de cualquier
organismo, es imperativo que se indique claramente el lugar
(herbario, museo o coleccin particular) donde se encuentren
depositados esos especmenes. Asimismo, se debe indicar
recolector(es) y los correspondientes nmeros de coleccin.

Se publican los siguientes tipos de material: artculos de

investigacin; revisiones (se espera de estos documentos
una crnica crtica y objetiva sobre los desarrollos recientes
ms importantes en un tpico y sugerencias sobre campos
de investigacin futura, en su mayora sern solicitadas por
el Comit Editorial y tambin se reciben colaboraciones
voluntarias); comunicaciones o notas cortas (espacio para
publicar observaciones o resultados nicos o avances de
investigaciones originales o novedades, registros biticos y
de distribucin, anlisis o ampliacin de teoras, hiptesis o
conceptos de inters en biologa); cartas al Editor (foro: crticas
y respuestas a trabajos previamente publicados); revisiones
de libros.

Artculos de investigacin. El manuscrito se debe dividir

e incluir la siguiente secuencia de secciones: TTULO
del manuscrito (en espaol e ingls); Nombre y Apellidos
de los autores (primer nombre completo, segundo nombre
solo la inicial; apellidos completos y unidos por un guin);
Direcciones institucional, postal y electrnica de cada autor;
Resumen y Abstract (en ambos idiomas); las Palabras
clave y Key words (entre 3 y 6 palabras clave debajo de su
respectivo resumen); INTRODUCCIN; MATERIALES
Y MTODOS; RESULTADOS; DISCUSIN;
AGRADECIMIENTOS; y REFERENCIAS. Las
tablas y figuras (y sus respectivas leyendas) guardadas en sus
correspondientes carpetas: Tablas y Figuras.

Normas editoriales

Comunicaciones cortas. Se recomiendan las mismas pautas

que para los artculos de investigacin, pero no es obligatorio
el uso de subttulos en las secciones: INTRODUCCIN;
MATERIALES Y MTODOS; RESULTADOS;
DISCUSIN; y REFERENCIAS.

Preparacin y envo del material. Las contribuciones pueden

ser escritas en espaol o ingls y sern publicadas en el idioma
en que sean enviadas. No se aceptan trabajos ya publicados
o que hayan sido o estn sometidos a otra revista. Los
manuscritos enviados a la revista deben ser acompaados de
un documento firmado por todos los autores donde se declare
que el manuscrito es indito y no ha sido o no est sometido a
otra revista. El Comit Editorial determinar para cada ao, el
valor de la pgina final impresa correspondiente a derechos de
publicacin en los nmeros regulares de la revista, para el ao
2014 es de $35.000 (treinta y cinco mil pesos colombianos, US$

Los manuscritos enviados sern revisados por al menos dos
expertos en el tema; su aceptacin para publicacin se basar
en la calidad cientfica y en el ajuste estricto a las instrucciones
y normas de Actualidades Biolgicas que se presentan a
continuacin.
Todos los archivos del manuscrito (texto, tablas, figuras, anexos)
debern enviarse al Editor ya sea, va correo electrnico a:
<actubiol@matematicas.udea.edu.co> o <actubiol.udea@gmail.
com>; o puede enviar solo el CD, el cual deben estar identificado
con el nombre del primer autor, ttulo del manuscrito y fecha; o
si as lo prefiere, enviando un original impreso en papel tamao
carta por una sola cara y una copia de todo el manuscrito en
disco compacto (CD). Todos los documentos del manuscrito
se debern enviar en tres carpetas: 1) carpeta Texto con el
texto del manuscrito; 2) carpeta Tablas con los archivos de
todas las tablas del manuscrito; y 3) carpeta Figuras con
los archivos de todas las figuras y un archivo MS-Word con las
Leyendas de las figuras.

Revisiones. Todas las colaboraciones sern evaluadas por

pares y su publicacin depende del concepto de estos y del
ajuste estricto a las pautas de estilo de la revista (al menos 50
referencias bibliogrficas, preferiblemente, de los ltimos dos
o tres aos, en la seccin REFERENCIAS).
En general, todos los manuscritos, incluyendo los destinados
al Foro, deben llevar un ttulo, un ndice de palabras clave y un
resumen, con versiones en espaol e ingls.

Pautas generales para el envo y la elaboracin

del manuscrito
Todos los documentos del manuscrito (excepto figuras) deben ser
guardados y enviados como archivos MS-Word (xxx.docx o .doc).
Texto. Todos los documentos del manuscrito (texto, tablas,
excepto figuras) debe estar escrito con estilo Normal, letra
tipo Times New Roman de tamao 12 puntos, mrgenes
de 3 cm en todos los lados, a doble espacio o interlnea.
Todas las pginas del manuscrito deben estar numeradas
consecutivamente. Los apellidos de los autores en la esquina
superior izquierda (si son tres o ms autores escribir el apellido
del primer autor seguido de et al.).
Por favor, tenga presente las siguientes indicaciones para
la elaboracin del texto del manuscrito: 1) use siempre un
solo espacio de barra entre palabras, luego de coma, punto

y coma, dos puntos, parntesis, punto seguido, etc. (No debe
usar espacios dobles de barra); 2) entre prrafo y prrafo solo
debe haber un retorno; es decir, un enter, incluso despus de
ttulos, sin ningn espacio; 3) No utilice los comandos Final de
seccin o Salto de pgina; 4) el guin tipogrfico, largo o raya
() debe escribirse con las teclas ALT + 0151. Este es usado para
abrir dilogos, encerrar frases explicativas o incisos y reemplazar
nmeros de una lista. En este ltimo caso debe haber un espacio
entre la raya y el texto externo (v. g.: los resmenes ambos en
ingls y espaol deben); 5) el guin que se usa entre palabras
y nmeros es el del teclado. Por ejemplo: Margalef-Ramrez,
1978-1998 (note que no hay espacio entre los rangos); 6) cuando
utilice tipo de letra cursiva o negrilla en el texto, tenga presente
que los signos de puntuacin que le siguen deben ir con este mismo
tipo de letra [v. g.: Palabras clave:; Cultivos celulares.; (SI),
(LT), (UdeA)]; 7) NO DEBE HABER HIPERVNCULOS O
ENLACES DE DIRECCIONES ELECTRNICAS EN TODO
EL MANUSCRITO.
Tablas. Se debe hacer referencia de cada tabla con su nmero
de manera ascendente en el lugar apropiado del texto (tabla #).
Cada tabla debe ser elaborada en estilo Normal y guardada
como un archivo MS-Word (Tabla #.docx o .doc) en la carpeta
Tablas del CD o del correo electrnico. La tabla NUNCA
DEBE SER elaborada y guardada como archivo formato
figura (v. g.: Tabla #.jpg).
Figuras. Se debe citar cada figura con su nmero de manera
ascendente en el lugar apropiado del texto (figura #). Todos
los nmeros, smbolos, y letras de las figuras deben ser
comprensibles y legibles en letra tipo Arial de tamao mnimo
de 12 puntos, de manera que permanezcan legibles cuando se
reduzcan para la publicacin. Generalmente los tamaos de
las figuras publicadas en la revista estn entre los 8 cm (una
columna) y 17 cm (doble columna) de ancho. Cada figura debe
ser elaborada y guardada como un archivo en formato .jpg
(Figura #.jpg) con resolucin de elaboracin de no menos
de 400 ppp (400 ppi). La publicacin de fotografas, grficas
o dibujos a color tendr un costo adicional. Un archivo con las
Leyendas de las figuras, debe ser elaborado como el texto,
en estilo Normal y guardado como un archivo MS-Word
(Leyendas de las figuras mss xx-xx.docx o .doc) en la carpeta
Figuras del CD o del correo electrnico.
Abreviaciones y estilo. Los nombres cientficos de especies se
deben escribir en itlica. Se debe escribir el nombre cientfico
completo junto con el apellido del autor y el ao, solo cuando se
citan por primera vez en el texto (no cumple para el TTULO y
TITLE; y Resumen y Abstract), de ah en adelante se abrevia
cuando sea posible (G. especie).
Se debe usar el Sistema Internacional de Unidades (SI) (<http://
www.economia.gob.mx/work/normas/Promocion/Sist_intnal_
de_unids.pdf>; puede descargarlo de la pgina electrnica de la
Revista Actualidades Biolgicas <http://matematicas.udea.edu.
co/~actubiol/>, y sus respectivas abreviaciones. Se debe utilizar
cifras decimales no en fracciones, excepto en ecuaciones.
En todos los documentos del manuscrito (texto, tablas y figuras)
escritos en espaol, las cifras decimales van separadas por
comas (v. g.: 0,023) y en ingls por punto (v. g.: 0.023); y los
miles por punto en espaol (v. g.: 10.239,56; 174.239), y en

ingls por coma (v. g.: 10,239.56; 174,239); excepcin para
aos: 1996; 2013.
Referencias bibliogrficas. La citacin de las referencias
bibliogrficas en el texto del manuscrito deben organizarse
en orden alfabtico con base en el primer apellido del primer
autor y luego en orden cronolgico. Si se citan dos autores, se
debe usar la letra y o and para conectar los apellidos de los
dos autores, no debe usarse el smbolo & en lugar de y y
and. Si son tres o ms autores, se debe indicar solo apellidos
del primer autor, seguido por et al. ao, v. g.: Castro-Vega
et al. 1984. Si hay varias referencias bibliogrficas en la
oracin, estas se separan por una coma (,), y la penltima y
ltima cita se conectan con la letra y, v. g.: como informan
Castro-Vega et al. (1984), Cox y Fox (2005, 2008), Monson
(2000a, b, 2007) y Zrate (1980). Todas las citas de referencias
bibliogrficas en el texto se separan por coma (,), v. g.:
como documentaron varios autores (Castro-Vega et al. 1984,
Cox y Fox 2005, 2008, Monson 2000a, b, 2007, Zrate 1980).
Para dos o ms publicaciones de autores diferentes, algunas en
el mismo ao: como detallan los estudios previos (Baker et
al. 2004a, b, c, 2006a, b, Castro-Vega 1984, 2001a, b, Gmez-L.
y Zrate-Pez 2003a, b, 2005, Prez-Mora y Paine 2002, Reed
et al. 2001, 2003). Observe el orden alfabtico entre el grupo
de citas y la separacin entre ellas por una ,. De igual manera
para en el texto: como detallan los estudios previos de Baker
et al. (2004a, b, c, 2006a, b), Castro-Vega (1984, 2001a, b),
Gmez-L. y Zrate-Pez (2003a, b, 2005), Prez-Mora y Paine
(2002), y Reed et al. (2001, 2003). Para citar comunicaciones
personales: Apellido, com. pers..
Las referencias bibliogrficas en la seccin REFERENCIAS
del manuscrito, se deben ordenar primero alfabticamente,
con base en el primer apellido del primer autor, y luego,
cronolgicamente. Los dos apellidos de los autores deben ser
completos y unidos por un guin; el nombre del libro o revista
debe ser completo (no abreviaturas). En caso de no ser la
primera edicin (1.a ed.): segunda edicin = 2.a ed.; tercera
edicin = 3.a ed.; cuarta edicin = 4.a ed.; quinta edicin = 5.a
ed.; etctera (en ingls: 1st ed.; 2nd ed.; 3rd ed.; 4th ed.; 5th ed.;
etc.). NO DEBE HABER HIPERVNCULOS O ENLACES
DE DIRECCIONES ELECTRNICAS EN TODO EL

Actualidades Biolgicas (RAB; ISSN 0304-3584) is a
specialized journal for the publication of unpublished articles of
high quality that are the product of investigation in the biological
sciences. The journal receives manuscripts during all the
year and publishes two numbers a year in July and December.
Occasionally, it publishes a supplement focusing on a current
important theme.
Actualidades Biolgicas publishes the following types of
material: Research papers; Revisions (these constitute a critical
and objective chronicle of recent important developments in
a topic and suggestions concerning future areas for study.
The majority solicited by the Editorial Committee however,
voluntary contributions are welcome); Short communications
(this section includes observations, unique results or advances
of original investigations or novelties, biotic and distributional
registers, analyses or amplifications of theories, hypotheses, or
concepts of interest in biology); Letters to the Editor (Forum:
where critiques, responses to critiques, and clarifications of
previous works are published); Book reviews.

Editorial rules
Preparation and submission of manuscripts. Documents may be
submitted in Spanish or English and will be published in the language
in which they are submitted. Articles that have been previously
published or that have been submitted to other journals will
not be accepted. The Editorial Committee will determine each year
the cost of final printed pages for publication rights in the regular
numbers of Actualidades Biolgicas. For 2014, it is US$ 20 in the
two regular journal numbers. The fee may change at any time. For

Manuscripts will be evaluated by at least two experts in the area;
its acceptance for publication will be based upon its scientific
merits and its conformity to the instructions for style that are
presented below.
All documents of manuscript (text, tables, figures, etc.) should
be sent to the Editor via e-mail to: <actubiol@matematicas.
udea.edu.co> or <actubiol.udea@gmail.com>; or (original)
impress on letter size paper by one paper side, or only must be
sent the magnetic copy (CD) identified with the names of the
first author, the manuscript`s title and the date. All documents of
manuscript (text, tables, figures, etc.) must be in three folders:
folder Text with the text file; folder Tables with the table
files; and folder Figures with the figure files and a file of the
legends of the figures.
When submitted studies are the result of investigations of
particular biological species that involve voucher specimens,
it is imperative that the place (herbarium, museum, or private
collection) where the specimens are deposited is clearly
indicated. Likewise, the collectors and corresponding collection
numbers must be indicated.

Research papers. The manuscript should include the following

sequence of sections: the TITLE of the manuscript (in English
and Spanish); Name of the autor(s) [First name complete,
Middle name only the initial, the Last two names (surnames)
united with a hyphen]; the Institutional, mailing, and e-mail
addresses of each author; the Abstract y Resumen
(in both languages); Key words and Palabras clave (3-6
key words following each abstract); INTRODUCTION,
MATERIALS AND METHODS; RESULTS;
DISCUSSION; ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS; and
REFERENCES. Tables and figures (and its legends) must
be saved in their respective folders.
Short communications. The same guidelines as for research
articles are recommended, but the use of subtitles is not
necessary for the following sections: INTRODUCTION;
M AT E R I A L A N D M E T H O D S ; R E S U LT S ;
DISCUSSION; and REFERENCES.
Revisions. All contributions will be peer reviewed and their
publication will depend on the opinions of the reviewers and the
conformity of the writing style to the guidelines of the journal
(at least 50 bibliographical references, preferably the last two
or three years, in the REFERENCES section).
All manuscripts, including submissions to the Forum, should
include a title, a list of key words and an abstract, with versions
in English and Spanish.

General guidelines
All documents of the manuscript (except figures) must be salved
and sent as MS-Word file (xxx.docx o .doc).
Text. All documents of the manuscript (text, tables, except
figures) must be written in Normal style, Times New
Roman 12 point font, with 3 cm margins on all sides, double
spaced. All pages should be numbered consecutively. The last
names of the authors appearing in the upper left hand corner,
if there are three or more authors, follow the last name of the
first author by et al.
Please observe the following rules when preparing the text:
1) one space should always be used between words, after
commas, semicolons, colons, parentheses, etc. (do not place
double spaces); 2) between paragraphs there should only be
one carriage return, including after titles; 3) page breaks or
section endings must not be used; 4) the typographic hyphen
or dash should be written with the keystrokes ALT + 0151. This
is used to: open dialogs, close explicative phrases or inserts,
and replace numbers in a list. In the latter case, there should
be a space between the hyphen and the text; 5) the hyphen
used between words and numbers is that of the keyboard. For
example, Margalef-Ramrez, 1978-1998 (note that there is no
space between the ranges); 6) when italic or bold text is used,
recall that the punctuation marks that follow carry the same font

(UdeA), (UMN)]; 7) It must not have any hyperlink to WEB
addresses in all manuscript.
Tables. Each table must be cited with its number in ascending
way in the text (table #). Each table must be elaborated or written
in Normal style and salved as a MS-Word file (Table #.docx
o .doc) and included in the folder Tables of the magnetic
copy of the manuscript or via e-mail.
Figures. Each figure must be cited with its number in ascending
way in the text (figure #). All numbers, letters, and symbols of the
figures must be compressible and readable in 12 point Arial
font, in such a way that they remain legible when reduced for
publication. The size of drawings, photographs, and graphics
should be approximately the same as what they will have when
published. In general, figure sizes used by the journal are
8 cm (single column) and 17 cm (double column) width.
Photographs should be black and white with glossy finish and
excellent clarity. Each figure must be salved as a .jpg file (Figure
#.jpg) with a initial or original resolution at least 400 ppi and
each file included in the folder Figures of the magnetic copy of
the manuscript or via e-mail. Publication of color photographs,
graphics, or drawings will imply an additional cost.
Abbreviations and style. Scientific names of species should
appear in italics. It is recommended to write the name in full,
together with the authors last name and year, the first time
it is employed in the text, but from then on abbreviate the
name when possible. The metric systems and its abbreviations
should be employed for all measurements (for a reference
see http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/) (these rules are in the
Actualidades Biolgicas home page: <http://matematicas.udea.
edu.co/~actubiol/>. Decimals must be used instead of fractions,
except in equations. In articles written in Spanish, the decimal
point should appear as a comma (i. e.: 0,023), while in English
it should appear as a period (0.023,); and for thousand, in
Spanish it appears as a period (i. e.: 10.239,56, 174.239), while
in English as a comma (i. e.: 10,239.56, 174,239), exception for
years: i. e.: 1996; 2013.
Bibliographical references. References in the text must be
organized in alphabetical order, based upon the first last name of
the first author and then chronologically. When the reference is
by two authors, the last names are connected by the word and
(not use the symbol & for and and y). If a publication
has three or more authors, only the last name of the first author
should be included, followed by et al. year (i. e.: Castro-Vega
et al. 1984). If there is more than one citation in the sentence, the
citations should be separated by comma ,, and the penultimate
and last citation should be connected by the word and, i. e.:
as reported Castro-Vega et al. (1984), Cox and Fox (2005),
Monson (2000a, b, 2007), and Zrate (1980). All reference
citations in the text should be separated by comma (,), i. e.:
as is reported by several authors (Castro-Vega et al. 1984,
Cox and Fox 2005, Monson 2000a, b, 2007, Zrate 1980). For
two or more articles of different authors, some in same year:
as previous studies (Baker et al. 2004a, b, c, 2006a, b, CastroVega 1984, 2001a, b, Gmez-L. and Zarate-Pez 2003a, b, 2005,
Prez-Mora and Paine 2002, Reed et al. 2001, 2003). Note that
one should cite in alphabetical order and then chronological

revista Actualidades Biolgicas una versin
exacta, honesta y precisa de los resultados o
datos de las investigaciones desarrolladas,
incluyendo todos los datos relevantes. Todos
los autores deben declarar no haber incurrido
en malas conductas cientficas como plagio,
fabricacin, falsificacin, seleccin de datos o
duplicacin de publicaciones. No est permitido
el mejoramiento o manipulacin de imgenes que
elimine o no represente cualquier informacin
presente en los originales. Es obligacin de
los autores referenciar o declarar el origen de
imgenes, datos e ideas que proceden de otros
autores o fuentes y que hayan sido utilizados en
su manuscrito.

Actualidades Biolgicas with an accurate,

Actualidades Biolgicas son tratados como
documentos confidenciales. El proceso de
evaluacin de los manuscritos es de forma
annima, tanto para los autores como para
los evaluadores. Este es un proceso de doble
anonimato: los evaluadores desconocen la
identidad de los autores, y los autores tambin
desconocen la identidad de los evaluadores. Hay
por lo menos dos o ms evaluadores para cada
manuscrito.

All manuscripts submitted to the journal are treated

as confidential documents. The evaluation process
of the manuscripts is anonymous, for authors and
for reviewers. This process is double-blind peer
review: reviewers are unaware of the identity
of the authors, and authors are also unaware of
the identity of reviewers. There are two or more
reviewers for each manuscript.
