IV. Describe the 19th Century Philippine Society
V. Compare and contrast the 19th century Philippine society to the
Contemporary Philippine Society
I believe that the need of Jose Rizal to cure his mothers eyes was one of
the significant events that transformed Jose Rizal. He went to the different
cities in Europe and Germany to get further knowledge about ophthalmology
so that he could aid in his mothers eye problem. I think that his desire to
attain more knowledge started when he decided to help out his mother
because there was need to learn more and going outside the Philippines to
study might have sparked his desire to learn new things so this event had a
contribution to the transformation of Rizal. This event actually increased his
desire to acquire more
knowledge. I am going to say Rizals mother was one of the people who
really influenced him because she was one of the reasons why he went out of
the country to study. His mother was the reason why he is giving so much
importance into pursuing educational excellence. His mother was also the
one who taught him to respect his elders and to really put his family above
everything. I also believe that he learned his good morals and values from
his mother even if they were mistreated by the Spaniards, Rizal still

managed to respect them. During the Spanish colonization, the Filipinos were
almost treated like slaves. We were under the harsh treatment of the
Spaniards and they were really brutal with us. Some people were raped,
abused, and robbed. A lot of bad things happened actually. With this
information, the Filipinos did not think too highly of themselves but rather as
low class citizens because of how they treated. Being under the hands of the
Spaniards made the Filipinos look down on themselves. Up until now, some
of the Filipinos still do. During the 19th Century, the Spaniards actually helped
the Philippines in some ways. They taught us new ideas and new industries
like they helped us improve in our farming and the construction of our
homes. The 19th Century Philippine society was very productive. The people
worked really hard to provide for their families. The 19th century was a time
where people focused more on the needs than the wants and it was also the
time where there were a lot of thrifty people. Having said that, being thrifty
and hardworking, it has contributed much to the economy of the Philippines.
I can say that the Philippines was rising up in all ways during this time.
Comparing it to the generation now, the 19th Century Philippine society was
more productive in terms of human labor because the people before did not
have machines to do the job for them but in the contemporary Philippine
society, the machines do everything for us and this made some of us lazy.
People now are not hardworking anymore since there are a lot of distractions
in this generation like social media for example. They didnt have this before
thats why they were more focused on getting the job done but the good
thing about the Philippine contemporary society is that people can be free to
do what they want to do and not be restricted by any Spaniard so both times
actually have their pros and cons but living in this generation right now feels
really good since we were able to benefit from the hard work that the past
generation did for us.
