up kem
University of the Philippines
Chemical Engineering Society,
Incorporated
Halfway through the 20th century, fourteen pioneering chemical engineering students shared a vision
of service for the students and the faculty of the then established Department of Chemical Engineering. On August 26, 1954, UP KEM Engineers was formally established and, in 2003, the Securities and
Exchange Commission registered UP KEM Engineers as a non-stock, non-profit corporation under
the new name UP Chemical Engineering Society, Incorporated.
In order to involve its members in large-scale activities, and at the same time build stronger ties among
chemical engineering and chemistry students all over Metro Manila and Luzon, the organization became an affiliate of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers Junior Chapter Luzon (PIChE
JCL) and the Philippine Association of Chemistry Students (PACS) in 1983 and 2007, respectively.
As an organization recognized both by the National Youth Commission and the University, UP Chemical Engineering Society, Incorporated (UP KEM) has proven itself to be a top-notch organization
capable of organizing large-scale events. The Students National Chemical Engineering Conference,
a flagship event of the organization, is held in celebration of the organizations anniversary. sNCEC
has five sub-projects National Chemical Engineering Symposium, Students Chemical Engineering
Networking Event, Inter-University Chemical Engineering Quiz Show, Research Grant, and Chemical
Engineering Campus Challenge Series. Another huge event hosted by UP KEM is the Awitan. It is a
prestigious chorale competition for amateur chorale groups of different student organizations within
UP Diliman.
Awarded as the Best Organization by the Engineering Organization Excellence Awards (EOEA) in 2009,
2011, and 2012, UP KEM carries on its consistent
tradition of academic excellence and holistic development. As part of celebrating its 60th anniversary
of foundation, UP KEM continues to grow leaders,
stimulate young minds, fuel ambitions, pursue excellence, and promote professionalism, integrity, and
holistic development by introducing Project C++:
ChEck Marks The Spot, another flagship event organized for high school students.
project c++
Check marks the spot
Project C++: ChEck Marks The Spot is a cluster of three revamped KEM projects and
one new event all unified to promote chemical engineering as a career path to secondary students and ignite appreciation to chemical engineering-related disciplines. These
four events are ChEmaraderie, CAReS, ChEcklist, and ChEckmate.
C hEm araderie
ChEmaraderie is a science camp for high school students. It aims to engage the students in a fun and handson learning experience in chemistry and physics. It also
endeavors to widen the knowledge of students in different laboratory techniques and proper handling of pieces of
equipment. The event features an integrative series of lectures and experiments wherein simple theories and applications related to chemical engineering will also be discussed.
C AReS
The KEM College Admission Review Series (KEM CAReS,
or simply CAReS) is an intensive entrance exam review for
graduating public high school students. It aims to help these
students prepare not only for the University of the Philippines
College Admission Test (UPCAT) but for other entrance tests
as well. The program is held in five Saturdays and includes
a mock UPCAT that will give the students a touch of the real
thing. Subjects covered in the review are General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Filipino, and English.
C hEck lis t
ChEcklist is a career orientation program which aims to educate
third year high school students on how to decide on a career
path. The event also aims to introduce chemical engineering
both as a potential course and as a profession through a series
of talks and workshops that the participants will find interesting.
ChEck mate
ChEckmate is an interschool quiz bee for high school
students. It is a new event of UP KEM under Project C++:
ChEck Marks The Spot which aims to highlight the importance of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics as
foundation courses of chemical engineering. This event
will also serve as the culminating activity of Project C++.

1. Each participant is allowed to bring only one non-programmable calculator and their own pens. Answer sheets,
scratch papers, slates, and all necessary materials will be provided.
2. The questions will come from the following domains: mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics.
3. The competition has two phases: the elimination round and the final round. Only two students are allowed to
participate for each phase. In case a school has three representatives, substitution of the alternate is only allowed
at the end of each phase. Substitutions wont be allowed during the contest proper.
4. The scores for both the theoretical and practical part have equal weights and will be summed to get the top ten
scores for the elimination round. The teams who gathered the top ten scores shall proceed to the final round. Thus,
if two teams tied at a score included in the top ten scores, both teams will proceed to the final round.
5. The scores of the qualified teams for the final round will be reset to zero.
6. The final round is a show me board quiz type. It will be divided into three stages: easy, average and difficult.
Three questions per domain will be given in the easy and average round while two questions per domain will be
given in the difficult round, a total of twelve questions for easy and average round and 8 questions for the difficult
round. The time limit will depend on the nature of the question. (i.e. calculation, conceptual). The point system for
each stage is as follows: Easy 2 points; Average 3 points; Difficult 5 points.
7. In the event that the answers to the questions are flashed prematurely, the question in consideration will be
invalidated and the ChEckmate technical committee shall replace the question with a new one under the same
domain and level of difficulty.
8. In case of ties for the final round, clincher questions will be given to break the ties until the top five teams of the
competition has been decided.
9. The Board of Judges will be composed of faculty members from the Institute of Mathematics, the Institute of
Chemistry, the Institute of Biology and the National Institute of Physics [of UP Diliman]. No judge shall act as a
coach of any participating team. The judges decisions regarding all protests that may be raised during the quiz
show shall be final.
C O NT E S T PR OCE D URE
1. The program will officially start by 8:30 A.M. on March 7, 2014. All participants must register on or before
8:30 A.M. Failure to appear before this time shall mean automatic non-participation for the event.
2. Elimination Round
In the elimination round, the thirty-two competing schools will be divided into two blocks: the White Block
and the Black Block. Participants from the White Block will first take the theoretical part while those from the
Black Block will take the practical part. After one hour and thirty minutes, the two blocks will change places.
The White Block will take the practical part while the Black Block will take the theoretical part.
A.) The Theoretical Part
Venue: College of Engineering (Room assignments will be announced during contest briefing.)
The theoretical part of the elimination round is a 60-item examination to be answered within 1 hour and 30
minutes only. This shall be accomplished individually. However, the average score per team will be considered. There are fifteen questions per domain: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The type of
question for each item varies (multiple choice, identification, problem solving, etc.) and the amount of points
per item is specified in the questionnaire. The use of non-programmable calculators is allowed. A periodic
table and other necessary aids will be provided for reference.
B.) The Practical Part
Venue: College of Engineering Maynilad Room
The practical part of the elimination round is composed of sixteen stations, four for each domain: Biology,
Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each pair will be assigned a number from one to sixteen, designating
their first station. Each station shall be accomplished within five minutes. When the bell rings, the pair moves
to the next station according to the designated rotation whether they have finished the station or not. This
rotation shall be done until all teams have reached all sixteen stations.
3. Final Round
Venue: College of Engineering Engineering Theater
The final round is a show me board quiz type divided into three stages: easy, average and difficult. Each
team will be provided with their own boards, markers, erasers and scratch papers. The teams shall answer
the questions flashed into the screen within the given time limit. Timing will start after the question has been
read by the Quiz Master twice. Contestants may start answering while the question is still being read by the
Quiz Master. The teams to get a right answer will get the corresponding points for that question. Again, the
pointing system for each stage is as follows: 2 points for easy, 3 points for average and 5 points for difficult.
4. When a team gets the correct answer for a question in the final round, the team will receive a portion of the
portrait of a famous scientist. Each stage in the final round will have a different portrait. At the end of every
stage, the teams may guess the name of the famous scientist in the portrait. The teams will be given two
minutes to assemble their pieces and think of the correct answer. The teams to correctly guess the name of
the scientist will get twice the point for the stage (i.e. 4 points for easy, 6 points for average and 10 points
for difficult)

5. Final Answer
A. Each team shall write their answers on the slates provided and these shall be submitted to the ushers
assigned to the team at the expiration of every questions time limit. All final answers must be encircled or
boxed. Answers that are not encircled or boxed will not be credited.
B. The answers written on the slate may still be changed with a new answer if the time limit for the question
has not expired yet. The new answer will be considered once it has been encircled or boxed.
C. Rounding-off calculated values should be done in the final answers only, free-floating decimals should be
kept during the preliminary calculations. Unless otherwise stated in the problem, all the final answers should
not be written in scientific notation. The number of significant figures in the final answer will be stated in the
question and the even-rule of rounding off numbers must also be strictly followed. All answers should have
appropriate units.
D. If the required answer is a word or a phrase, correct spelling including capitalization and punctuation shall
be strictly checked. Abbreviations and acronyms shall not be accepted unless otherwise stated.
6. Tie Breaker
To break ties in the final round, clincher questions shall be given one at a time. This will be done until the top
five teams of the competition emerge.
7. Violations
A. Failure of the team to submit their answer slate their respective usher upon the quiz masters declaration
of time expiration is considered an offense and will earn the team a warning. After three warnings, the team
shall automatically be disqualified.
B. Coaching (e.x. giving audible or visible signals) from the audience will result to the invalidation of the given
question. The ChEckmate technical committee reserves the right to replace the question in cases such as
this.
C. Cheating in any form of any member of a team will to his/her teams automatic disqualification.
P RO T E STS
1. Only the contestants shall be allowed to file protests. If they have protests, they should raise their hands
and wait for the Quiz Master to acknowledge them.
2. Protests regarding a particular question must be made before the reading of the next question. Protests
regarding a particular question will no longer be entertained once the Quiz Master has already started reading the next question.
3. The judges shall deliberate on all protests. Their decision shall be final.
