rubber dismantling joint

General description

BIKAR, starting from its BF-PPS type rubber expansion joint, has recently developed a new product capable of working
simultaneously, as an expansion joint as well as a dismantling joint.

BF-PPSs technology provides a rubber expansion joint, considered one of the most advanced in the market, with full
fixed backing flanges and rubber bellow body vulcanized on the flanges. As a result of the same, BIKAR provides
their clients, a wide range of advantages in order to improve their installations or save important costs which are usually
caused throughout design phase, running operations and / or maintenance process.

ADVANTAGES of a Rubber Dismantling Joint de BIKAR

Easier installation
Provides more movements than
traditional dismantling joints
Economical
Maintenance cost savings
Best technical solution
Less performance cost

It saves cost during installation. One single piece is able to perform same work as an
expansion joint, absorbing vibrations, delays of civil work, etc. It can also be compressed,
allowing enough space to remove any adjacent equipment (valves, pumps, flowmeters)
Minimum compression 25mm
Absorbs vibrations.
Allows angular movements.
No need to purchase expensive materials such as superduplex, no need to use special
surface treatments such as Rilsan or ebonite coatings The area of contact with the fluid, is
a rubber type able to withstand seawaters chemical attack.
No need to repaint the external parts, nor apply ebonite coating to internal parts.
Long-lasting sealing, no need of periodical retightenings.
Able to work in vacuum service conditions.
Longer useful life.

Comparison Rubber Dismantling Joint vs. Traditional

Dismantling Joint

Traditional dismantling joints are specially designed to provide an easy way to dismantle and install any equipment or
accessory flanged to the pipe (valves, pumps, etc.). Thus, a flange adaptor is combined to flanged ferrule, forming a set.
Once this set is installed, the bolts of the flange adaptor are tightened and sealing is achieved by compressing the rubber Oring. Dismantling joints enable longitudinal adjustments due to the telescopic action of the flanged ferrule inside the adaptor.

Definitive anchoring is recommended by means of tie-rods (calculated based on test pressure). These tie-rods will also be
used as the connection between flanges, reducing this way, the number of the same. This type of lock system with tie-rods
is recommended to avoid the risk of the pieces coming out of their position. It also avoids the use of strong anchors.
The most important component of a dismantling joint is the rubber O-ring. The material of this ring should be able to
withstand the presure load, temperature variations, vibrations, impacts and bendings, caused by many different factors
existing in a pipe. The sealing in the closing area is obtained with the deformation of this joint, thanks to its flexibility and
resistance.
Besides the horizontal adjustment obtained by loosening the tie-rods, also when dismantling is performed, these joints will
be able to absorb some movements of the pipe during service.
The axial movements, expansion / compression, would be absorbed by the flexibility and resilience of the rubber o-ring.
These movements should be limited to a maximum of 2,5 mm It should also be taken into account, that these values will
decrease, due to a permanent deformation, and the resilience loss that the rubber material will suffer throughout the lifetime
of the dismantling joints, caused by repetitive movements and constant pressures. In the event that axial movements were
higher to 2,5 mm., the pressure exerted on the joint would be excessive. This could cause either high permanent
deformations or either very low, with a loss of the sealing properties.
Besides, a dismantling joint does not absorb lateral movements, even though a special design could be made with a set of
2 dismantling joints with an intermediate pipe. This way, thanks to the angular movement of each one, it would enable the
lateral absorption as well..
Lately, the tendency is to use expansion joints which are able to, on one hand maintain the dismantling length and enable
maintenance of those equipments flanged to the pipe, and on the other hand, able to absorb all type of movements, axial,
lateral, angular, etc.
In conclusion, this alternative will provide a double service with one single element, which will absorb the movements of the
pipe, and will allow to dismantle the adjacent equipment.
