A Callahan resident called police around
6 a.m on Friday, January 29 after a driver
lost control on Roy Booth driving through
one resident’s yard. The driver crossed Point
South Road, tore down another resident’s
fence and hit a pine tree. Without any con-
sideration for Mr. Beauregard’s property, the
driver decided to leave the scene. The driver
was driving a two-toned Ford F250, either
beige and blue or beige and black in color.
The damage is estimated at $1600.

anticipation for the fights to begin.
Continental Championship Wrestling
(CCW) based in Northeast Florida put on
the “Stampede 2010,” showcasing their
wrestlers who competed in the main event
for a $10,000 prize.
CCW started in Nassau County in the
early 1990s. Their events draw on average
300 to 500 fans. Julian Marcs, a wrestler
with CCW says they are a great wrestling
company. They work with many nonprofit
organizations around the area and give back
to the community. They work with Fern-
andina Beach Football, Hilliard Middle-
Senior High School Football, the police de-
partment and with the “Say No to Drugs”
campaign.

the small towns, but he says they are

she does take her son to the park a lot, she does wish it was a
little nicer. “This town could stand to be cleaned up a little.”

John likes living in Fernandina because it’s a great place
to raise a family and he loves the beach. All of his kids love
playing basketball here. The only thing he doesn’t like are
the condition of the roads, especially on A1A.

in Yulee. As detectives and deputies
headed to the home, they spotted the
vehicle said to have been seen leaving
the area and stopped the driver.
They found a computer monitor,
jewelry, an X-Box game system, pill
bottles and other items in the vehi-
cle. They questioned Brandon Joseph
Claxton, 18, of Yulee and a 16-year-old
male from Yulee.
Both suspects were questioned sepa-
rately after the stop. After their rights
were read to them, they agreed to talk
to the officers.
Both suspects broke a window to en-
ter the home and stole over $300 worth
of property.
Claxton told the officer they had
just left Home Depot prior to being
stopped, but later confessed to the rob-
bery and to another burglary, on the
same day, at a home on Burmeister
Road in Yulee. Both suspects stole stole
jewelry, two guns, a flat-screen compu-
ter monitor, pill bottles, a Playstation,
three cell phones and other items. Ac-
cording to the arrest report, Claxton
said he was given some money and that
his co-defendant took the rest of the
property to his residence where they
hid it in the woods.
Claxton faces several charges includ-
ing two counts of burglary and one
count of grand theft. He is currently
held in the Nassau County Detention
Center on a bond of $70,008. The ju-
venile suspect is being held in the Juve-

Betty Hodges always wanted to own a con-
signment boutique, but never had the moti-
vation to make it happen. But one day about
a year ago, the inspiration came to her on a
drive through the small towns of Georgia,
where she kept seeing consignment shops in
each town.
Hodges is now the owner of Abigail’s Attic
in Kingsland, GA, an upscale consignment
boutique with a personal and feminine flare.
Hodges has been in real estate for more
than 25 years and owns two other companies.
She possess the skills to market and promote
and the experience to start a company. She
says she was driving to her mother’s house
one day in Vidalia, GA. She was driving
through all the small towns to en route to Vi-
dalia and realized they all had some sort of
consignment shop. She saw that as a sign to
finally try and open one of her own. There are
other consignment shops in Kingsland, GA,
but not the kind she has always imagined.
She wanted a place that was homey and
inviting with affordable, name-brand, high-
end clothing. She personally buys most of
the clothing she sells and says she doesn’t put
anything on the racks that she wouldn’t per-
sonally wear. Everything is very gently used.
Abigail’s Attic carries everything from
shoes, jewelry, purses and clothing for ages 10
and up as well as men’s and boy’s clothing.
She says a woman can come in and purchase
an entire outfit with shoes, accessories and a

each one named after her three children; Brit-
tany’s Boutique, Brianna’s Room and Tyler’s
Room. Each have their own theme and are
unique from each other. The hallways in be-
tween has a desk with coloring materials for
kids to occupy themselves as moms shop.
The front room has an antique decor and is
all done by Hodges herself. She says she loves
shopping antique stores and is always bring-
ing in new decorations. Sometimes custom-
ers ask her if the decorations are for sale. She
doesn’t sell them because they are part of the
charm that bring people in Abigail’s. The
shop is adorned with sequined drapes, flow-
ers and antique knickknacks.

GARDEN TALK: Can I cut back my roses now?

Q: Currently I have a lime tree in a
pot and I want to plant it outside. When
would be a good time? PB
A: I would suggest you wait until the
threat of frost is over. The final date for
frost may be sometime between March 15
through April 15. Of all the citrus limes
are the least cold tolerant. Limes may show
cold leaf damage when temperatures drop
into the low 40s. Hard freezes, similar to
the ones we experienced in 2009, will most
likely destroy the whole tree. However, once
they are established, which may take five
to seven years; they should survive through
most of our winters. It would be important
to protect the young trees through those
vulnerable early years. If the tree is small
shoots will be very vulnerable if and when
temperatures drop again below freezing.
There is a very good chance we will expe-
rience some colder temperatures within the
next few weeks. If you can wait, we would
rather you wait. Removing all the dead ma-
terial from perennials can be done but in
some cases the dead material acts as a pro-
tective covering for the roots. Perennials will
return once temperatures remain consistent-
ly warm. Regarding pruning trees or shrubs,
you can remove dead branches and stems
any time. Pruning during dormant season is
preferred for many trees. Wait to remove the
frozen, damaged leaves off citrus or oleander
until end of February or March. It was so

in darkness for any length of time. Limes
and lemons set flowers and fruit throughout
the year as long as temperatures are warm.

maturing on the tree. When a freeze occurs,
it would be best to remove any fruit. Some
people think the young fruit will mature
later but it will be destroyed by the cold. I
would suggest novice home citrus growers
to start with a more cold-hardy citrus such
Satsuma, Ambersweet orange or Limequat.
We will be having a citrus class which will
demonstrate proper pruning on February
17 at 10 a.m. at the UF/IFAS Extension
satellite office. No need to register and the
class is free.

ing, fertilizing and pruning roses properly,
you will have the most beautiful and satis-
fying rose garden in the area. Consider at-
tending the session, which will be held at
James S. Page Governmental Complex. The
session is free to the public. Come see the
roses being grown in the UF/IFAS Nassau
County Demonstration garden and how
easy it would be to add them to your own
landscape.

NASSAU COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY TEAMS UP WITH CHARITY FOR HAITI RELIEF DRIVE
Members of the Nassau County
Medical Society are teaming up with
the non-profit agency, Mission Har-
vest America, to Reach out to Help
Haiti in an earthquake relief drive
running through February 12.
On January 12, a 7.0 magnitude
earthquake struck the small island
nation. Survivors of the quake and it
aftershocks are especially vulnerable
because of the country’s poor infra-
structure and poverty.
The greatest need right now is for
ready-to-eat, non-perishable items.
Survivors have lost their homes and
need the basics – water, ready-to-eat
food and clothing. The community
is invited to drop off the following
items at five area locations: pow-
dered milk, baby food and formula,
canned goods including meats, fish
and stew (pop tops are preferred),
juice boxes, bottled water, oatmeal
and pancake mix, bags of rice or
beans, flashlights and batteries, can
openers, bug repellent, sanitizing
wipes, diapers, children’s clothing,
trash bags, tents, sleeping bags, baby
blankets, underwear (new only),
toiletries, first aid kits and supplies,
antibiotic ointments, Tylenol, Advil,
Benadryl, cold medicine and vita-
mins.
