The word tough is tossed

around a lot in sports these days,
oftentimes quite loosely. However,
no one embodies that term quite
like Seneca High Schools boys
lacrosse goalie Tyler McCormack.
McCormack finished his sophomore season last year as one of
the top goalies in South Jersey. He
had huge implications going into
his junior year, but they all came
to a screeching halt on a summer
day in August.
I came from the beach. I figured it was just a misunderstanding, Id be back by the ocean in no
time, McCormack said. Once I
got the news, it really took a couple days to set in.
After complaining about a
lump in his armpit, he went for a
standard chest X-ray.
The results from the X-ray
and the blood work that was done
came back a little suspicious,
McCormack said.
It was Hodgkins Lymphoma,
cancer of the part of the immune
system called the lymphatic sys-

Though Jack Sterbenz of

Troop 26 in Medford is still two
merit badges and one eagle palm
away from officially becoming an
Eagle Scout, he has completed his
project and made the town of
Shamong a better place in doing
so.
Under Jacks leadership and
guidance, Scouts, family and
friends made trot/ground poles,
lesson display stands and a paver
walkway at the local Kids Korral.
Kids Korral, Inc. is a registered
charity whose sole purpose is to
provide therapeutic horseback
riding lessons to children with
special needs.
The program is under the direction of Jennifer Hill, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International

My brother has special needs
and he used to ride horseback
there, so we knew the owner,
Jack said. She has always been
such a generous woman, so I felt
she was most deserving of the assistance that my project would

Indian Mills Memorial School inducts

National Junior Honor Society members
On March 26, Indian Mills Memorial School held its annual National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony before a crowd
of proud parents and teachers.
The NJHS is a national, service
based organization that limits its
membership to students in seventh and eighth grade who have
met strict academic qualifications. To be invited into NJHS, a
student must have a 92 percent average for the four marking periods in sixth grade and the first
two marking periods in seventh
grade. They also must have been
involved with some kind of charity work, volunteer work and/or a

leadership role in the school or

community.
Once inducted into NJHS they
must maintain an average of 90
percent. Additionally, to remain
active, students must participate
in service projects.
Students compete for admission based, not only on their academic achievements, but also by
demonstrating high leadership
potential and endorsements from
their teachers.
Teachers recommendations
are based on a strict set of guidelines and require at least one year
of observation. The advisors are

bout 10 years ago, we started a

contest of sorts that helped us
give back to the community of
Haddonfield.
In the contest, we ask residents of
Haddonfield which, at the time, was
one of the only towns where we had a
newspaper to submit short essays
telling the community why a local nonprofit group deserved to receive a donation. We gathered all the nominating
essays, published them and held a community-wide vote to see who was most
deserving.
After we tallied the votes, we donated $500 to the organization that won,
and we also gave $100 to the person
who wrote that particular essay. For
us, this contest which we called The
Ray of Hope was a way for us to give
back to the community in an extremely impactful way.
The smaller organizations that re-

ceived nominations such as a Cub

Scout troop, a garden club, a senior citizens club or a book reading club
often do as much for the community as
the larger, more well-known non-profits do, but they just dont receive the
same attention, or financial backing.
Were not saying that the March of
Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits
dont support worthy causes or are not
deserving of donations; were just saying the $500 we were donating had
more of an impact on the local town
organizations, since they operate with
a much smaller budget.
Last year, as we celebrated our com-

panys 10th anniversary, with now 10

newspapers that we publish, we expanded on this idea by creating The
Ray of Hope Fund a part of the Community Foundation of South Jersey
to make similar micro-donations to
community organizations that have a
significant impact in the neighborhoods they serve.
Weve been collecting tax-deductible
donations over the last year, and are
still collecting them online at
http://elauw.it/rayofhopefund.
Now, were about ready to start distributing some of this money. But first,
we need your input.
What organization in town do you
think is deserving of a donation from
The Ray of Hope Fund? Send your
nominations to the email address at
the right. Your input is key in helping
us help the community you live in, and
the community we serve.

tem.
Suddenly, a game that was such a big
part of McCormacks life since the third
grade was now on the backburner, and his
future was up in the air.
But the power of a positive attitude and
the support of his peers took him a long
way, and the cancer was unable to keep
him down for long.
In the beginning, I focused more on my
health, but as I learned more and more
about the process, I was hoping that I

would play lacrosse and I think I knew I

would. That was the goal in the back of my
mind, McCormack said.
He could not say enough about the help
and support he received, not only from his
team but also from the entire community.
Everyone around me made it so much
easier. The community was great, especially my team. Anything I could ask for, they
were there for me, and it made it so much
easier on me, McCormack said.
McCormack said the biggest obstacle he
faced throughout the process was keeping
his mental composure and a positive attitude. It can be pretty grueling for anyone to
keep up with school, sports and everything
in between while regularly going to the
hospital for treatments.

The team rallied around him and did

whatever it could to keep his spirits high.
In return, McCormack was able to make
an incredible comeback and be in goal for
his team for the opening game against
Gloucester Catholic this spring.
The team has ridden that momentum to
a scorching hot 6-1 start to the season.
Fresh off a shutout against Haddonfield,
McCormack was still remarkably humbled
and level headed about the outlook of a
season that is still generally young.
Im happy with how the team looks
thus far. A lot of hard work, a lot of focus.
We have a goal in the back of our mind,
and were not going to stop until we get

When asked about that goal,
McCormack emphasized the onegame-at-a-time mentality.

Though he is only a junior, a

provide.
The six display stands that
were created will be a huge upgrade for Hill from her old system
of taping a piece of paper onto a
pole in the riding arena to provide the lesson plan.
Jack and his crew also created
extensions on the display stands
that will hold a magnetic dry
erase board that Hill can write on
or place items on for that particular days lesson. The boards infrastructure will enable them to
be removed from the stand so she
can store them inside in inclement weather.
The trot/ground poles will
allow Kids Korral to expand their
current lessons, Jacks mother
Ellen said.
The paver walkway will allow
two wheelchair-bound riders better access to the riding arena,
which is very sandy and hard to
push a wheelchair through.
It was originally intimidating
to some of the kids who are physically disabled, so my goal was to
make it less intimidating and easier to use for them, Jack said.
According to Jack, the walkway was always something that
has been in bad shape, and Hill
proposed the idea of upgrading
the lesson plan stands. The entire
process from planning to physi-

cally completing the project took
a couple months in all.
Though Jack had things that
took away from his time to complete his project, such as school,
golfing and being on the Shawnee
High School swim team, he didnt
hesitate to say the paperwork was
the biggest nuisance when it
came to completing the project.
However, the combination of
helping the organization and
inching closer to the final goal of
becoming an Eagle Scout provided more than enough motivation
to complete the project.
As a kid, being a Cub Scout
was just something that I enjoyed,
and then moving on to being a
Boy Scout provided more opportunities to take part in activities.

That solidified the idea of me one

day earning the rank of Eagle
Scout, he said.
Jack wanted to give special
thanks to A.Z. Lawncare and Tree
Service Robert Yetter specifically Wharton Landscape supplies
and Medford Sunrise Rotary. He
also wanted to thank the Scouts
and his friends who helped out,
specifically Ryan Minshall.
Ryan was a huge help. He is a
part of Troop 26 as well, and I
have no doubt that he will one day
become an Eagle Scout with me,
Jack said.
Jack will now be completing
