N March 1, Brickfields
Asia College (BAC) and
Tech Outreach Malaysia
(Tech stands for The Economic
Consultancy House) signed a
memorandum of understanding
(MOU) for a collaboration on
corporate social responsibility
(CSR) projects.
The CSR projects are in the area
of entrepreneurship development
for underprivileged women, which
consist of single mothers, abused
women, abandoned women
and women with incapacitated
husbands.
The MOU aims to provide
opportunities to educate
these women through various
entrepreneurship and business
management courses to help
them manage their small business
entrepreneurial ventures.
BACs managing director Raja
Singham says, We are trying
to do whatever we can in terms
of education by improving lives
through education. In this case, by
improving the lives of these single
mothers, we also improve the
lives of their families. As Mahatma
Gandhi had said, Educate a man
and you educate one person;
educate a woman and you educate
a whole nation.
The signing of this MOU is
part of BACs efforts to develop
sustainable educational
programmes in line with its vision
of empowering Malaysians via
education.
BAC has several other
education-based CSR initiatives
that are dedicated to enhancing
the livelihood of children, the
underprivileged and the disabled.
This includes EduNation, a
web-based platform that provides

free tuition for secondary school
children in Malaysia.
All of BACS CSR initiatives
fall under the BAC Gives Back
umbrella, which organises,
supports and contributes to
various causes and charitable
organisations through fundraising
events and activities.
This gives volunteering
opportunities to its students and
anyone who is interested.
To provide a more wholesome
education experience for its
students, BACs all-encompassing
curriculum comprises activities

within and outside the classroom.

This enhances their academic and
career prospects.
For the third year running, BAC
A-Levels students have received
the prestigious Outstanding
Cambridge Learner Award
for their excellent results in
the Cambridge International
Examinations (CIE) series.
Express route student Audrey
Siew Sze Yen scored the highest
marks in the world for the
A-Levels law and economics
subjects in the November 2014
exams, while standard route

students Leow Ho Eng and Teh

Zhuo Li scored the highest marks
in the world for AS-Level law
and AS-Level business studies
respectively.
Since 2010, BAC students have
been awarded the Top in the
World Outstanding Cambridge
Learner Awards (formerly
Cambridge Brilliance Awards)
for law and business studies four
times, with three consecutive
wins in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
The CIE A-Levels is the ideal
pre-university programme for
students who are undecided

on a specific tertiary education

path because it leads to a broad
range of programmes. Students
who are interested in pursuing
law, business, medicine, finance,
engineering or communication
can select from a wide range
of A-Levels subjects that BAC
offers. These include biology,
chemistry, law, economics,
accounting, English literature and
mathematics.
Students looking forward
to getting a head start in their
careers will find the BAC A-Levels
express route the perfect option
for them.
This specially designed
11-month programme gives BAC
students an edge over those on the
standard 18- or 24-month route.
Coupled with BACs UK transfer
degree programme in law or
business, students will be able to
graduate up to two years ahead of
their peers, making BAC the fastest
and smartest way to more than 70
UK law and business degrees.
Students can opt for the BAC
Foundation in Arts programme,
which has been designed to allow
students to proceed to a wide
range of undergraduate degrees.
BACs April intake is now
underway. Students who sign up
will receive free books and study
materials. Scholarships are also
on offer.

HE University of Nottingham
Malaysia Campus (UNMC)
is focused on catering to
students needs beyond the
provision of a world-class British
education. Acknowledging the
complexities of breaking into
the workforce upon graduation,
the university seeks to provide
assistance and guidance to future
UNMC graduates in kick-starting
their global careers.
Kohila Palanisamy, global
employment consultant at UNMC,
is part of the Global Labour Market
Team. The team operates across
various regions covering all three
of The University of Nottingham
campuses in Malaysia, the United
Kingdom and China to bring the
best international employment
opportunities to Nottingham
graduates. This is done by working
closely with the Career Advisory
Services (CAS) teams in the
respective locations.
The employment market
currently offers various career
opportunities at all levels
multinational companies and
small to medium enterprises

Assistance in global careers

alike, says Kohila.
UNMCs student and staff
bodies are an amalgamation of
budding talents and esteemed
academics from around the
world. Its students come from 70
different countries. The academic
staff is made up of research and
industry experts from more than
30 countries, including lecturers
seconded from the UK campus.
UNMC students are encouraged
to expand their horizons with
study abroad programmes such
as the inter-campus exchange
programme, where they can opt to
spend one semester or academic
year in the China or UK campus.
Second year students with the
minimum academic requirement
met are eligible to apply as long
as the campus offers their course
of study. The Universitas 21 or
partner university exchange

The University of Nottingham Malaysia

Campus aims to guide its future graduates
in kick-starting their global careers.

offers similar opportunities

to students to study in one
of UNMCs various partner
universities around the world.
There is therefore much to
be learnt from the on-campus
community itself, especially if
students immerse themselves
in extracurricular activities and
community engagement where
they can develop leadership
skills, soft skills and get a feel of
the working world.
One such avenue available
to UNMC students is the
Nottingham Advantage Award
programme, which gives
students the opportunity to
stand out among their peers in
the employment marketplace.
As participants of NAA,
students are involved in
activities that provide
opportunities to enhance
learning and be recognised for
their contribution to activities.
Upon successful completion,
record of participation
is included in the degree
transcript and recognised at
the graduation ceremony.
Students can also take
part in activities organised by
AIESEC as involvement in this
organisation greatly benefits
them in terms of personal
development and professional
networking. They are also
exposed to social justice
issues that expand their world
view and mould them into
responsible global citizens,
explains Kohila.
AIESEC members have
the opportunity to travel
and dabble in a variety of
activities, which teaches them
essential skills while instilling
confidence and independence
in building graduates who can
carry themselves well in the
working world.
Based on her experience of
working closely with exchange
students and returning
graduates, Kohila believes it
is important for students to
obtain such experiences if they
wish to expand their career
prospects.
Students come back from
these programmes with a
fresh mentality as a result of
exposure to new things and
places. This prepares them to
become global talents, which
is what employers are on the
lookout for, says Kohila.

Many international UNMC

graduates seek career advice
at CAS in hopes of obtaining
employment with top Asian
companies. The Employment
Pass Category II initiative has
enabled foreign graduates
who have completed tertiary
education in Malaysia to
pursue employment locally
with multinational and
government-linked companies
as well as strong home-grown
organisations.
According to Kohila,
Malaysian graduates who
return from studies abroad
and hope to work here are
not left out. Top companies
are increasingly targeting
these returning graduates for
recruitment and initiatives
such as recruitment video
conferences allow them to
pre-select from a pool
of promising talent. She
observes that the Asian region
is becoming a hotspot for
companies from all over the
world, which will significantly
increase employment
opportunities in the coming
years.
Kohila advises fresh or
soon-to-be graduates to always
keep their eyes and options
open for various opportunities
in the job market.
I believe employers are
more flexible these days as
there are many jobs that do not
require a specific degree, she
says.
She goes on to explain that
some companies offer positions
in which graduates of various
disciplines are able to branch
into a different field. Therefore,
students should be open to
expanding their options and
exploring potential positions
in which they can pursue a
fulfilling global career.

Scent of success

ILAI University (Nilai U) offers a

new loan scheme for its Diploma in
Culinary Arts programme, which
allows students to commence their studies
with just a RM100 payment, with the rest
being financed through a loan with a local
bank.
Most people might not hesitate to spend
RM100 on a meal, so why not use the same
amount to start learning how to prepare
a fancy meal yourself? says Edward
Felix Joseph, acting dean of the Faculty of
Hospitality and Tourism at Nilai U.
Joseph can often be found at Nilai Us
on-campus formal dining restaurant,
Flamme, offering constructive criticism on
dishes prepared by students.
I try to be encouraging as these are
youngsters just starting out on their
culinary journey, he says.
However, he does point out that to
prepare students for the realities of a
functioning kitchen, lecturers who run the
practical sessions ensure that students do
not slack off and put in the necessary effort
in their lessons.
Nilai Us Faculty of Hospitality and
Tourism has been in operation since 2003
and also offers the Diploma in Tourism

courses that lead to its BA (Hons) in Business

8 COURSE FOCUS StarSpecial, Tuesday 7 April 2015

IELD trips are an integral

part of learning at Sunway
Universitys Centre for
Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary
Management (CTHCM).
Through field trips, students
experience a different countrys
culture and cuisine that inspire
their creativity and deepen their
understanding of their studies and
training.
In the past, final year CTHCM
students from the BSc (Hons)
in International Hospitality
programme received the
opportunity to visit various
locations, including Bali, Chiang
Mai, Seoul, Hong Kong and
Colombo.
These visits were arranged
under the strategic management
module, which aims to enhance
students learning experience
through practical exposure to the
real world.
Lecturers who guide students
on the study trips are tasked to
assign students topics that address
the respective citys contemporary
tourism and hospitality issues.
Prior to the trips, students
conduct research and complete a
literature review on the assigned
topics and cities to prepare
questions and surveys for their
primary research while in the
cities.
Daniel Chong Ka Leong, the
CTHCM lecturer who led the first
few trips, says, Generally, most of
the Malaysian students exchange
programmes or field trips abroad
are not accredited in their degree.
However, accrediting field
trips encourages students
participation and I strongly
feel that a trip with structured
academic planning gives students

Real-world learning experience

Accrediting field trips
encourages students
participation and a
trip with structured
academic planning
gives students a
practical way of
implementing what
they have learnt in
classes.

a clear and practical way of
implementing what they have
learnt in classes, in addition to
broadening their cultural and
historical exposure. This also
develops their critical thinking
and skills in research and problem
solving.
Lai Mun Loon, a CTHCM
teaching fellow who accompanied
the students on a trip to Sri Lanka,
says, Sri Lanka was selected as
the destination for our most recent
study trip because of the countrys
emerging tourism and hospitality
industry after the civil war in
2009 and the tsunami destruction
in 2004.
The topics assigned to
students on this trip included

crisis management audit in the

hotel industry, S.W.O.T (strength,
weaknesses, opportunities and
threats) analysis of the countrys
tourism industry and hotel
industry and human capital issues
faced by the hotel industry.
To help students in their
research, lecturers arranged
meetings for students with
industrial experts on every study
trip.
In Sri Lanka, for example,
students interviewed the top
management personnel of
Walkers Tour Limited (a local
travel agency), Cinnamon Hotels
and Resorts (a leading five-star
hotel chain), Galle Face Hotel (the
oldest hotel in Sri Lanka) and the

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions

Bureau (a statutory body under
the Sri Lankan Ministry of
Tourism).
Some corporations also give
students the opportunity to
observe their business operations.
For example, in Seoul, students
observed and learned the daily
business operation of a skiing
resort Oak Valley Sri Resort
where they spent one of their
nights.
Field trips make the BSc (Hons)
in International Hospitality at
Sunway University unique as
it has been carefully designed
by lecturers for students
to experience real-world
opportunities. They help us

establish connections and prepare

us with the knowledge and skills
we need for the workforce, says
Lee Si Min, a student of CTHCM
who went on a field trip to
Hong Kong.
Study tripsare effective tools in
broadening students perspectives.
Such learning is effective as it is
reflected on the students field trip
research writing.
Chong says that the research
carried out by students during
their field trip is of high quality,
which can be seen in one of his
students research paper due to be
published. This is testament to the
positive impact that field trips have
on a students research capabilities.
