Photo Design
Description:

Use the basic edits (Light, Focus, and Composition) in Photoshop to produce a
quality image of an original photo

Date:

2/4/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the
colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for
NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:

I set up the pepper shaker about a foot away from the items I wanted in the
background and changed the setting on my camera to near-focus. I made sure the
camera was focused on the pepper shaker by holding down the camera button
until the background blurred and the pepper was the only object that was coming
in clear then I snapped the photo. I then used Photoshop to adjust the contrast and
saturation to sharpen the image.

Business Card
Description:

Design a new logo for business cards using Illustrator and InDesign.

Date:

2/28/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos
or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space.

Process:

I created the business card outlines with the square shape tool. I created three
swirls. The two on the inside were used to wrap the text and clock design around
the outside swirl. I increased the brush size on the outside swirl and selected the
variable width element to make the swirl decrease in size as it approached the center of the swirl. i made the background a very light gray to help the colors contrast
with each other better. The front includes the company logo and motto while the
back has the company name and contact information. There was more whitespace
than I wanted to I added a swirl element on contact information side to pull the text
together.

Montage
Description:

Using two or more images create a montage by using a layer mask to blend the images together.

Date:

2/12/2015
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Visual Media
Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)

Process:

Using Photoshop I blended two pictures, one of a temple and one of Christ at 30%,
into a background of two fingers touching. One finger has a design like a cloud and
the other is grass and trees. The verse is taken from D&C 97:15 and I chose to emphasize the phrase, For I will come into it, because I think that is a central part of
the verse and would attract readers to that portion of the design.

Brochure
Description:

Make a duplex folding brochure to promote a companies product, service or

location using Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign.

Date:

3/29/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including
the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the
text follows the cutout shape of the image.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create my logo design. I used the square shape to create a regular square and then using the Pen tool and its sub tools I rounded off the
top and bottom corners of the square shape to create a football-like shape. I then
copied and pasted two more of them and arranged them in a pattern similar to a
flower. Using the Pathfinder tool I cut out a smaller version of the shape from the
petal on the left side of my logo.
Next I used Photoshop to cut out one of the images I found from its background.
To do this I used the Quick Selection tool and made sure I only selected the portion
of the image I needed for the brochure and then I cropped it out of the background
and refined the edge of the new image to give it a finished look.
Finally I used InDesign to create my brochure design and pull all the pieces together. I used the ruler to set guides so I could see where my folds were going to be and
labeled each of my pages. I placed the images into the brochure and used the Text
Wrap tool to let the letters wrap around the images.

Event Ad
Description:

Create a full-bleed, 8.5 by 11, photodesign project that includes an original

quality image, a consistent color scheme based on that image, some text,
and a few design elements.

Date:

1/31/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message
and audience.

Process:

After finding the image I scanned a copy using my HP Deskjet 3050 at home. I used
Microsoft Word to change the color and format settings to make the image sharper
and brighter. I made the image the background for my event ad. I then added design elements of orange and blue to contrast with the pictures color pallet of green
and red.

Flier
Description:

Create an attractive layout for a news flier using the logo and image provided.

Date:

1/25/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in
InDesign intact.

Process:

This flier was created in Adobe InDesign using grayscale as the color base. The tools
that I used the most were the color, select, and box tools. I used the shape tool to
create the brackets around the content areas to help emphasize them. I also added
the line to separate the main content from the add and website at the bottom of
the page.

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Notepad++

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300
500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to
a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to
target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags),
img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to
format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The
h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the
background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process:

Using Notepad++ and some HTML and CSS files provided I wrote up a site
describing my logo and the processes I used to create it. I then used the CSS file to
further modify my site design by placing my web elements where I wanted them.
I chose to have a darker red for my background to allow the readers focus to bedrawn to the actual message with the gray background.

Logos
Description:

Create three unique logos in Illustrator using type, shape, symbol, or

illustration designs.

Date:

2/21/2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 Visual Media

Sister Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an
image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image
before submitting.)

Process:

The first logo is a simple text design with text on top of a square colored background with more text beneath the box and all of that is laid on top of another
black background outlined in yellow.
The second logo is a symbol design using a cube with the letter I placed on each
side. I first made the letters with the Shape tool. Making the cube was the hardest
part of this design. I made three identical squares and than I had to use the Scale
tool to rotate the squares on the z-axis to give the cube its 3D feel. Once the cube
and letters were in place I used the Gradient tool to give it a sense of depth.
The third logo is an illustration design. I looked up a reference for Gir from Invader
Zim and drew him using the pen tool. I added a rounded rectangle as the sign he is
holding with the company name on it.
