Foreign Policy, Interventions and Role in Human Rights of President Jimmy Carter
Little experience with international issues when he started his presidency
Supported the rule of law in international affairs
Wanted self-determination for all people
Thinks we must replace the balance of power politics with world order politics
Agreed with Panama on control of Panama Canal
Helped to create peace between Israel and Egypt (Peace treaty in March 1979)
Wanted to promote universal human rights
Disliked the human rights violations in the Americas, South Korea and the
Philippines
Tried to avoid military intervention/ using the power of the US
The Defense Department Official and secretary of state clashed in their ideals
and strategies, but were both big parts of Carters foreign policy unit
Brzezinski encouraged Carter to get into conflicts with the USSR
Vance helped Carter to negotiate peace
Wanted to promote human freedom worldwide and protect the individual from
the arbitrary power of the state
Held allies and enemies accountable for their human-rights violations, even
though this meant that his relationships with other countries were sometimes hurt
Used tactics such as suspending aid to fight against human rights violations
Carter allowed the Shah to have his cancer treatment in the US after the shah
fled Iran because the Shiite muslims campaigned for a more Islamic Government
In response the Shiites took control of the US embassy in Iran, using hostages to
demand that the shah was sent back to Iran so he could stand trial
Carter stopped giving money to Iran and tried to negotiate to free the hostages
secretly but failed
Carter had a secret rescue mission try to free the hostages, but they failed and 8
soldiers died
The hostages were spread across the country and kept captive for 444 days
The new right was against Carter and wanted him to be harder on the Soviets
Carter released the Iranian funds and stopped interfering in Irans internal affairs
The hostages were freed the same day that Carter left office
A pro-Soviet coup took over Afghanistan
The US decided not to do anything about this coup because of its proximity to the
USSR
The US changed its mind and went against Carters ideals by then providing
money to rebels in Afghanistan, and then allowing the CIA to launch propaganda
operations again the communist rule in Afghanistan
Amin took control of the government and started reform programs that helped
education and womens rights, but the Afghan people did not like them because it went
against Islamic culture
Amin executed thousands of people who went against him
A civil war began in Afghanistan, pitting the Mujahideen against Amin

The USSR was scared of Amins relationship with the US and his position against
the soviets, which influenced the soviets to invade Afghanistan and remove Amin
Carter cut off exports to the USSR when the Soviets started the invasion, but
American farmers got mad because this hurt their business. He also boycotted the
olympics, which made athletes and the public mad
Carter lost to Ronald Reagan because Reagan told the country that he would
make them strong again
The US had sent a lot of money to the Mujahideen to fight the soviets
The Chilean military went into the Chilean cities and they were supported and
assisted by the US, although publicly the US claimed that they were neutral
Nixon recognized the Pinochet Government and supported them
Jimmy Carter stopped supporting these oppressive regimes
Human rights is the sole of Carters foreign policy
