Delays prompts changes in Badger Exam

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
A new test that is to be given to elementary and middle school students statewide
will not be given in its originally intended format, according to information presented at
the March 23 Menomonee Falls School
Board meeting.
Jeff Nennig, director of technology and
assessment, updated the board on the
Badger Exam, which is to be given to students in grades 3 through 8. The test is to
replace the Wisconsin Knowledge and
Concepts Exam (WKCE), although the state
will still require the WKCE for social studies
and science in the fourth grade
In introducing the item for discussion,
Superintendent Patricia Greco said district
staff have spent thousands of hours in
preparation to institute the test.
Its still an unstable testing environment, Greco said. She added that earlier in
the day district staff received an up indicating the product may still have challenges in
order to be able to perform successfully. Its
been probably as volatile a planning
process as it can be.
The Badger Exam is the state version of
the Smarter Balanced Test, according to
Nennig. He explained that while the WKCE
with paper and pencil, the Badger Exam will
be performed on a computer. The test window was going to be March 30 to May 22,
though Menomonee Falls would lose a week
due to spring vacation.
Nennig said an advantage of the
Badger Exam was that it was to be calibrated so that if a student answered a question

correctly they would get a more difficult

question. If the student provided a wrong
answer, the next question would be easier.
By comparison, the WKCE is a fixed test of
all the same questions.
However, Nennig later stated the computer-adaptive portion of test isnt ready, so it
has been removed and students will now get
fixed questions.
The testing company wasnt able to get
that to work, Nennig said.
Nennig explained that the big vision of
the Badger/Smarter Balanced test was to
gear students to college and career readiness. He also said that the test is to have a
faster turnaround, with results in June to send
to parents. Nennig also said that the test was
to be taken with less time, but that isnt the
case.
According to Nennig, English and
Language Arts portion of the Badger Exam
was scheduled to take four hours but that
was reduced to two hours because the performance portion of the exam is not ready. In
addition, a classroom activity that was to
have accompanied the performance portion
of the English and Language Arts portion of
the exam was cancelled a few weeks ago,
Nennig said.
In math, the Badger Exam is scheduled
to take 3 to 3.5 hours compared with 1.5 to
2 hours for the WKCE.
So one of the original claims for this test
was that it was going to be a shorter test, but
as you can its actually a longer test than the
WKCE, Nennig said.
However, Nennig said the math portion
of the test is not ready for the start of the testing window.

Hamilton offers summer

opportunities for students
The Hamilton School District will again
offer its popular Summer Opportunities
Program designed to provide enrichment,
enjoyment, skill maintenance and development for students entering 4K through
grade 8. It also provides middle school and
high school enrichment opportunities, credit make-up courses, strength and agility
training and driver's education.
Brochure and registration information
will be available March 26 on the districts
website at www.hamiltondist.k12.wi.us,
under Opportunities.
Registration begins April 1, and the
deadline for completed registration forms is
May 8. Registration by mail will be on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Families requesting popular courses should return complet-

ed registration forms with payment as early

as possible. Student schedules will be
mailed to homes the week of May 18.
Summer school for students will begin
June 22 and end July 17 for enrichment
courses. Some middle and high school
classes have different schedules. Classes
will run Monday through Friday with a
vacation day on July 3. Transportation will
be available on a first-come, first-serve
basis.
For more information, please contact
the Summer Opportunities Office at (262)

career paths including those of science,

(STEM) versus non-STEM careers. They
also attempted to assign mathematical
value to qualitative parameters that influence the overall quality of life.
After the second round of judging, six
finalist teams will be selected to present
their winning solutions April 27 to a panel
of mathematical experts at Moodys
Foundation headquarters in New York
City. Approximately 65 teams will be rec-

ognized with team scholarship prizes, with

the champion team receiving $20,000.

The testing company said its not ready

to go yet, so theyve delayed the math test
until April 13, Nennig said.
In addition, Nennig said that a caching
system that is to store test answers locally
until they can be sent will not be ready until
April 13, though it would not be ready until
later that day.
Board Vice President Ron Bertieri said it
sounds like the testing company is not fulfilling their contract as far as the timeline. Is this
going to delay things to the point were not
going to do this testing this year?
We havent been informed thats going
to happen, but theyre cancelling a few
things here, Nennig said.
Board member David Noshay added
that with the new test, districts wont be able
to determine if students have been incrementally improving from past years. In addition,
Noshay said the new testing breaks the continuity of tracking students for a lot of district
goals.
Noshay added there has been a bill proposed in the state Senate that would prohibit the Badger Exam results from being used
on district report cards.
Its amazing how gunky this is, board
member Scott Ternes said in response.
Greco said the district has not encouraged parents to opt their students out of the
exam. She said the district has included parents early on in summarizing the new exam,
while an all-district letter was sent out the previous week.
Nennig said computerized tests are
here to stay and this years exam give students to use those type of tests. He also said
the district should be able to break down
data from the exams.

and assessment for the School District
of Menomonee Falls, summarizes
recent changes to the Badger Exam
March 23. Photo by Thomas J.
McKillen.
Public Instruction announced that the English
and Language Arts portion of the exam,
which was scheduled to be ready by March
30, will now not be available until April 13.
According to a statement issued by the
agency, Educational Testing Service (ETS),
which holds the contract to provide
Wisconsins online state assessment, notified
the Department of Public Instruction on
Wednesday that it could not deliver the
English Language Arts assessment for
Mondays testing window.
These latest problems with ETS and the
additional delay are incredibly frustrating,
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Evers said. But, my first priority remains
ensuring that we have an exam that works
for Wisconsin educators and students. I have
made it clear to ETS that they must deliver a
functioning exam by April 13th.

Stevens Point stops Germantown for Division I title

BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT
Madison Sam Hauser ruined the
wishes of thousands of fans in the Kohl
Center who wanted to see history in the
making. When his 16 points in the first quarter outscored the entire Germantown team
(12), there was a feeling that the
Warhawks quest for a record fourth
straight WIAA Division 1 championship
would go by the wayside. Stevens Point
humbled Germantown in the title game, 6751, March 21, to close out the 100th
anniversary of the state tournament.
The junior forward, one of two Division
1 college prospects on the Point team,
made his presence felt on a bigger stage,
making five field goals, including four threepoint baskets, and he added two free
throws to set the tempo for the Panthers that
Germantown couldnt recover from.
"We put (senior forward) Kyle (Theis)
on (Hauser)," Germantown coach Steve
Showalter said. "Kyle is our best defender
and we had Kyle guarding him. I dont really love Kyle being way out there 25 feet
from the basket, but thats where Hauser
was playing. So I thought, maybe we can
mix it up and keep Kyle inside more to help
on the boards. And then Hauser just kind of
lit us up real quick."
The show that Hauser put on with his 25
points didnt surprise Theis one bit. "I knew
what kind of player Sam Hauser was a little
bit," he said. "I didnt know how good he
was. He can do just about anything. He can
shoot. He can drive. You try to deny him the
ball and hes moving really well without the
ball and not a lot of players can move as

well without the ball as he could and I think

that was something that really impressed
me."
Germantown scored the first points in
the highly-anticipated matchup between the
top two teams in the state after jumpers by
junior guard Juwan McCloud and senior
forward Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. gave them a
4-0 lead, but Hausers jumper gave the
Panthers their first lead of the game at 7-6
with 3 minutes 36 seconds left in the first
quarter. After consecutive threes by senior
guard Brian Studer and junior forward Max
Keefe put the Warhawks back in front, 1210, Hauser delivered back-to-back threes
that put Point ahead to stay at 16-12 at the
end of the period.
Point junior guard Trev Anderson then
got going. He scored his 10 first half points
in the second quarter. Germantown tried to
stay within striking distance and got no closer than seven. The Panthers took the
Warhawks into new territory with their 3022 halftime lead, something that was unfamiliar to the North Shore Conference
champs.
"I dont know how to explain it," Hauser
said of his first quarter outburst. "It was
unbelievable. The rim did feel like it was the
ocean. It was a good feeling and gives you
confidence."
Point kept the game under control in the
second half. Germantown got as close as
six points at 32-26 after McClouds layup,
but a 7-1 run late in the third quarter by the
Panthers boosted their lead back to double
digits and a 45-32 margin entering the final
period.
Anderson had a quiet third quarter with
his four points but erupted in the fourth with

11, tying Hauser for game-high honors and

putting the game was out of reach for the
Warhawks. They were behind as many as
21 with time winding down.
Point gave Germantown matchup problems at every position and made it difficult
for the Warhawks to get into an offensive
rhythm, but Showalter tipped his hat to the
better team.
"Thats a great team out there," he said.
"Theyve earned it. They deserved it. I
thought they came out and put it to us right
away. Their length bothered us. I think they
had us at every position by several inches.
Weve been able to fight through that with
heart and guts in the past and I think (Point)
wasnt going to let us take advantage of

any of that stuff. When it came to pretty

much every aspect of the game, they outplayed us basketball-wise and we were just
trying to hang on."
The Panthers won their fourth overall
title and first since their last appearance in
a state championship game in 1994.
Germantown had an impressive 109-3
record over the last four years with three
gold balls and a silver ball in six tournament appearances. McCloud led
Germantown with 15 points. Both teams finished their season at 27-1. It was the last
game in a Germantown uniform for Theis,
Benjamin Walter, Studer, Alex Kumbier,
Thomas Schnoor and Lawhorn.

Strong start lifts Germantown

Madison Playing in the state tournament was nothing new for Germantown,
since they have been there before. The
Warhawks reached their fourth straight trip
to the Division 1 finals by defeating
Madison East, 82-54, March 20, at the
Kohl Center, in the semifinal game to go 270.
In the first quarter, Germantown ran off
eight straight points to take a 10-2 lead with
4 minutes 11 seconds left. East made a
comeback to cut the Germantown lead to
three at the 2:51 mark. A remarkable threepointer at the buzzer by senior forward
Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. ended a 10-2
Germantown run to give them a 28-15
lead. "I just threw it up there and got lucky,"
he said.
The Warhawks didnt let up as they
reeled off seven straight points two minutes
into the second quarter to lead 35-15.
Germantown used their size advantage to
pound it inside to junior forwards Conner
Edmonds and Max Keefe and senior forward Kyle Theis to score 18 first half points
in the paint. The Warhawks took a 48-26
lead at the half. Lawhorn had 13 first half
points.

"We thought that we could take advantage (of the size) a little bit inside because
we got a little bit stronger and tougher
kids," Germantown coach Steve Showalter
said. "We were able to get the ball in the
post and get some offensive rebounds. We
were able to go inside and outside. But our
ability to get the ball into Kyle, get the ball
into Max and Conner, that was the key to
our game tonight, I think. Its been more
than we have been doing lately."
It didnt get any easier for East in the
second half as they found themselves trailing 63-35 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
It was 64-42 entering the fourth quarter.
Showalter was asked if the players
could stay focused with a comfortable lead.
"Guys are kind of having fun, smiling and
laughing," he said. "You got to let them
have some fun playing the game once in a
while. You dont always have a game like
that. We tried to get everybody in and give
everybody some good minutes on the Kohl
Center floor, which is always great for all
the kids to be here."
Lawhorn led five Germantown players
in double figures with 17 points. Theis had
13. Keefe and Juwan McCloud had 12
each and Edmonds chipped in with 10.
Madison East finished the season with a
20-7 record.

When the check engine light

is on, dont ignore it
(NAPSI)Dont take this lightly: One of
the most vital signals of an improperly
functioning vehicle is the check engine
light and, when illuminated, it alerts the
driver to a variety of existing potential
problems. Nevertheless, vehicle checkups
during car care events throughout the
country reveal that the check engine light
is on in nearly one out of 10 vehicles.
Some common malfunctions that can
cause the check engine light to illuminate
include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If
the light flashes, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately to
prevent severe damage, which may
include catalytic converter damage.
When the check engine light comes
on, it means that a vehicle system such as
the ignition, fuel injection or emission control is not operating properly, even if the
vehicle appears to be running normally,
explained Rich White, executive director,
Car Care Council, the source for the Be
Car Care Aware campaign promoting
regular vehicle care, maintenance and
repair.
A glowing check engine light doesnt
mean you have to immediately pull the car

to the side of the road, but it does mean

you should get the car checked out as
soon as possible. Ignoring the warning
light could result in costly repairs. At the
very least, the light could alert you to an
engine problem that is negatively impacting fuel economy, he added.
When scheduling service, make sure
the automotive shop that examines your
vehicle has professional technicians who
are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair. The technician will connect
your vehicles computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will indicate why
the light was activated.
At the same time, the technician can
analyze idle speed, throttle response,
engine temperature, fuel system pressure,
manifold vacuum, exhaust emission levels
and many other key indicators. Once the
problem is fixed, the cars computer is
reset to initiate its release process. The
technician should then be able to tell you
what needs to be done and discuss potential warranty coverage and further testing,
if necessary.

A little knowledge can make a big difference

(NAPSI)When it comes to pinpointing
potentially serious issues with your vehicle,
your nose may know more than you realize.
For example, the smell of burnt toast might
be a sign of an electrical short. The smell of
rotten eggs may signal trouble with the
emissions system, which includes the catalytic converter.
These and other tips are included in
Knowledge Is Power, a booklet thats part
of a car-care and maintenance clinic developed by ACDelco. It gives vehicle owners

easy-to-understand information about their

vehicles so they can be informed and make
the right choices when they visit an independent auto service center.
Here are some things you may not know
about your vehicle:
Reddish stains on the driveway can be
a sign of a transmission oil leak.
If your technician asks if your vehicles
brakes are grabbing, he wants to know if
the brakes engage suddenly when you
apply steady pressure to the brake pedal.

You should pull over immediately if

your temperature light reads in the hot
zone. That probably means your vehicles
coolant is too hot to cool your engine.
Many brake pads have wear indicators. If your vehicle has them, they will emit
loud squeals when they detect wear.
Its a good idea to write down your
vehicles symptoms before visiting a repair
shop, including noisesand whether these
occur when the engine is hot or cold.
Air bags work with your safety belts,

not as a replacement for them.

Children under 13 should ride properly
secured in the rear seat.
Always keep at least a half tank of gas
in your vehicle to avoid potential damage
to your fuel filter or fuel line.
Check your tire pressure frequently for
safety and fuel economy. Hot and cold outside temperatures affect the pressure in your
tires.
Avoid oil and fuel additives unless rec-

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED: OVER 25 YEARS
JEFF, STEVE, SCOTT & CASEY

By Tresa Erickson
Whether new or used, a vehicle is a
big investment. Most people cannot afford
to pay for a car outright and must make
payments on it instead, usually for three to
five years. Regular maintenance is a must
to protect such an investment and extend
the life of a vehicle. Without it, the vehicle
can break down and require big bucks to
repair.
Remember, the moment you drive the
vehicle off the lot, it is yours to care for.
Read the owners manual and follow the
recommended maintenance schedule.
Regular oil changes and tire pressure
checks are essential for keeping cars running their best and using as little gas as
possible. Change your oil every 30,000
miles or as recommended by the manufacturer. You can do this yourself or have it
done by a professional at a reasonable
cost. Know the correct tire pressure and
keep your tires properly inflated. To
extend the life of your tires and ensure
even wear, have them rotated regularly.
There are many other components to a

vehicles engine, and it pays to have them

checked out from time to time. Again, follow the manufacturers recommended
maintenance schedule. A quality mechanic is your best bet, unless you have extensive knowledge of the workings of a car. A
mechanic can check the air filter, brakes,
fluids, exhaust system, battery and radiator, among other things.
Regular car washes are another must.
Bird and pest residue, tar and other substances can do major damage to a vehicles exterior over time. It pays to keep
your new car clean, inside and out. Thats
right. Take the time to vacuum and clean
the interior. This is especially important if
you have young riders. Greasy fingers and
sticky foods and drinks can wreak havoc
on interior upholstery and carpeting.
Even with the best of care, vehicles can
break down. You are the first line of
defense in avoiding expensive repairs.
Know your car. Pay attention to the way it
sounds and feels, and at the first sign of
trouble, get it to a repair shop. The smaller
the problem, the easier and cheaper it will
be to fix.

KELLY SPRINGFIELD MICHELIN

BRIDGESTONE FIRESTONE

$
Neutrals most common
among car colors
By Tresa Erickson
Ask someone what their favorite color is,
and chances are they wont say a neutral like
white or gray. Ask someone what color their
car is, however, and chances are they just
might say a neutral. White, silver, black and
gray are the most popular car colors in
America and in many places around the
world. Sure, there are various shades of
white, silver, black and gray, but the fact
remains that they are all neutrals.
So, why do car buyers go for neutrals?
There is no one clear answer, but many point
to the investment factor. A car is a major
investment, and buyers need a car color they
can live with for a long time to come. A
bright yellow car at age 18 might be fun, but
not so fun a few years later. Purchasing a different color of car is not an option for most
people, nor is having the exterior repainted.
Resale also factors into the equation.
Bright yellow will not appeal to as many buyers as white or silver will. To ensure their car
sells easily later, many buyers will purchase
a neutral color. Neutrals also tend to hide
dirt and damage better than bolder color
choices.
Lot selection may also play a factor in
color choices. Pass by a few car lots, and
youll probably see more neutral colors than
bold. Dealers know what color of cars are
more likely to be bought and stock their lots
with them. So, yes, while you might
encounter some orange, red, blue and green
cars, chances are they will be located in a
sea of white, black, gray and silver.
Budget, of course, is always a factor.
Often, the bolder the color choice, the higher the price of the car. Bolder colors like red
and orange require specialty paint, which
increases the cost. While you may not notice
the increase in the sticker price, you will most
certainly see it should you order a car directly from the factory. Specialty reds, oranges
and the like can add hundreds of dollars to
the final price. Buyers may not care to fork
over the cash for a specialty color, especially if there are other extras more important to
them, like heated seats. Having a warm seat
to slide into in frigid temperatures might outweigh the need for a fiery red exterior.
While neutrals are the most common car

colors and therefore the easiest to find and

buy, that doesnt mean buyers have to settle.
There are various shades of white, silver,
black and gray available from pearl white to
matte black. As for buyers who have their
heart set on a bolder color, they will find it.
However, it may cost them, both in terms of
time and money.

Put the spring in your vehicle

By Craig W. Armstrong
The days are getting warmer, the ice has
melted and the birds have returned. That can
mean only one thing-spring has sprung. For
many people, spring brings a return to the
great outdoors. It can also mean less treacherous and time consuming driving. No more
digging your car out just to go to work, driving at a snail's pace and scraping, yes, the
dreaded scraping.
While it's tempting to jump in your vehicle and enjoy the freedom that spring brings
to driving, keep in mind that like you, your
car has been through a lot over the winter.
There are several things that need to be
checked and prepared for spring driving.
Depending on your level of car maintenance
expertise, you may be able to do most of
these things yourself. If not, have a professional take a look under the hood.
Begin where the rubber meets the roadyour tires. Check your tire pressure. The correct pressure will be printed on the tire in PSI
(pounds per square inch). If the tire is under
the recommended PSI, inflate it to that number...DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. This may
also be a good time to get your tires rotated.
This should be done every 5,000 to 10,000
miles.
For many areas, spring means rain so it's

a good time to check your wiper blades.

There are few things more annoying than
driving in the rain with wiper blades that
aren't doing their job. It's frustrating to have
a big smear across your field of vision or a
torn wiper blade trailing across your windshield. Avoid these problems b checking
your wiper blades. Replacing the blades is
quick, easy and relatively inexpensive.
Simply go into your local auto part store, tell
them your vehicle make and model, and
they'll direct you to the correct replacement
blade. Many stores will even install them for
you.
Another part that is easy to check is your
battery. Pop the hood and make sure that the
posts on the battery are clean. If there is an
excess of corrosion on the battery, consider
replacing it.
Clean out the interior. Months of salty
and snowy boots have no doubt taken a toll
on the carpeting. It's a good time to vacuum
and perhaps even shampoo the carpeting.
While you're at it, clean out the empty coffee
cups and fast food bags.
Other things to consider are the air filter,
the oil and oil filter, and the radiator and
cooling system. Spring is a time to get reacquainted with the great outdoors-just make
sure your vehicle is ready to spring into better weather.

Inside and out

By Tresa Erickson
Whether youre selling or maintaining
your car, a good detail job can go a long
way in keeping it looking its best. You can
undertake the thorough cleaning yourself or
you can take advantage of the services
offered at thousands of auto detailers nationwide. Whatever route you take, you can
expect the following areas to be covered.
Exterior
A cars exterior can take a real beating
over the years. Most exterior detail jobs
involve the cleaning, polishing and protecting of many facets of a cars exterior, including the paint, chrome trim, windows, wheels
and tires. There are several techniques and
products available to do this from acids and
degreasers to waxes and polishes.
Interior
Like the exterior, a cars interior can take
a real beating over time, especially in households with kids or areas with harsh weather.
Interior detail jobs include an extensive
cleaning of the dash, panels, windows,
upholstery and carpet. Depending upon the
service you select, the seats may be removed
from the car to ensure a good cleaning.
Again, a variety of techniques and products
may be used, including steam cleaning.

Engine
No auto detail would be complete without the pop of the hood and an engine
cleaning. Steam and degreasers can do
wonders to improve the look of an engine.
While body panels may be sanded to
eliminate scratches, most detail work does not
include major bodywork or repair.
Depending upon where you go, various
detail services may be available and prices
may vary according to the size of vehicle you
have. Detailers may offer everything from a
complete detail package to an exterior wash
and wax. No matter how much or how little
you have done, your car will look better and
you will feel better driving or selling it.

disabilities have been able to have an authentic summer camp experience for over 50
years. This summer, we need your help
preparing and serving meals during our
Thursday overnights. Stay after and join us in
kick ball, capture the flag, a Camp Pow Wow
Dance-Off, and other crazy all camp activities. Great for small groups. Teens age 13-18
must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers
needed in the evenings.
Patient Visitor Volunteer : Gentiva

Hospice-Locations close to you

Make someone smile. Many times hospice patients feel very alone. Patient visitor
volunteers help to fill this void by visiting our
patients, much as a friendly neighbor would.
A volunteer's only duty is to visit their patient;
our volunteers do NOT do patient personal
cares, give them medicines, transport them,
etc. Volunteers receive Medicare-guided
training about hospice philosophy, how to
visit patients in a caring and sensitive way,
and how to personally cope with visiting
patients with life-limiting illnesses. Adults 18+
available in the evenings during the week
and/or weekends, on weekly to monthly
basis. Volunteers must consent to a background check and tuberculosis screening.
Special Needs Teacher's Assistant:
Children's
Community
CenterMenominee Falls

Make a difference in a childs life. At

Childrens Community Center we are looking
for volunteers that have a passion to work
with children, are patient, and understanding.
Our volunteers need to be able to take direction from others and also work independently
when needed. Some of your responsibilities
would include: playing with children, helping
a child to complete an activity, interacting
with the child at circle time, encouraging participation in gross motor activities, assisting
with snack or meal time, or providing a break
for a child. Volunteers must be at least 18
years old and be able to volunteer at least
two mornings a week from 9a.m. noon.
