Portfolio Description
Alcatel-Lucent has evolved its mobile backhaul solution to address the small-cell era with optimized cell site router
solutions, new wireless backhaul access solutions and cost-reduced broadband access solutions as well as enhancing its
professional services to help operators address the intricacies of small cells and continued adoption of LTE and LTEAdvanced services. Mobile operators are faced with keeping pace with emerging service and capacity demand while
delivering the best mobile consumer experience possible. Since mobile operators all take unique paths to meeting
customer expectations, mobile backhaul solutions must be flexible, leverage all available technologies to provide the
capacity at the right cost points and support operators as they migrate their networks toward an all-IP LTE model.
Alcatel-Lucents mobile backhaul supports all relevant transport technologies: IP/MPLS, packet optical, MPLS-TP,
packet microwave and broadband access. The 7705 SAR family of products supports a variety of cell site access options including Gigabit Ethernet, CWDM/OADM, microwave, GPON, EPON, xDSL and nxDS1/E1. In addition,
higher-capacity line cards and tighter microwave integration deliver additional backhaul deployment flexibility. The
7705 SAR series includes outdoor, small-cell site routers in the 7705 SAR-W and recently introduced 7705 SAR-Wx
products. These products address small-cell deployment in compact, highly integrated outdoor form factors. Both the
7705 SAR-W and the 7705 SAR-Wx deliver full IP functionality and are right-sized for small-cell applications. Functions include PoE support with holdover, comprehensive timing and synchronization, enhanced Ethernet OAM, L2
MPLS services, L3 routing service and IPSec tunneling via a hardware-based encryption engine. The 7705 SAR-Wx
platform adds optional bonded xDSL uplinks and also an integrated GPS receiver plus an embedded PTP grandmaster for efficient synchronization acquisition and distribution. The 7705 SAR-O is an environmentally protected
device that minimizes fiber demands for centralized baseband unit (BBU) pooling deployments and Common Public
Radio Interface (CPRI) fronthaul applications. The 7705 SAR-H supports a built-in stateful firewall for indoor
small-cell deployments over business Internet services. Wireless backhaul support includes the 9500 MPR-s, which
supports solutions based on 60GHz, line-of-sight and point-to-point (P2P) applications; further expansion includes
a sub-6GHz radio to provide P2P, P2MP and NLOS capabilities for small-cell backhaul. An 80GHz (E-Band) radio
delivers the added capacity needed for macro site backhaul. GPON and EPON SFP-ONTs leverage the broadband
network metro cell backhaul at low incremental cost, with plug-in simplicity.
The primary product portfolios which are used in Alcatel-Lucents mobile backhaul solution include: the 7750 Service
Router (SR), the 7450 Ethernet Services Switch (ESS), the 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR), the 7210 Service
Access Switch (SAS), the 1850 Transport Services Switch (TSS) and the 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR). Additional platforms, such as the ISAM 7302/7330/7342 DSL and GPON access platforms and 1830 PSS, can also be
supported as part of the end-to-end solution. Alcatel-Lucents backhaul solution is managed by one of several management suites: the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), the 1350 Optical Management System (OMS) or the 5520
Access Management System (AMS), depending on the specific products deployed in the network. Alcatel-Lucents
unified management platform, the 5620 SAM, natively supports the 1830 PSS and 9500 MPR in addition to the full
IP/MPLS portfolio. The 5620 SAM, the primary platform, provides end-to-end management of a next-generation
wireless network including support for the LTE RAN, 2G/3G GGSN and LTE packet core. These management
systems provide a complete set of standards-based Ethernet OAM functions to ensure quality of service (QoS) for
all devices defined as part of the overall backhaul framework. The mobile backhaul solution portfolio above provides
an end-to-end packet-based network that offers the service intelligence, flexibility, simplicity and cost-effectiveness
necessary to satisfy growth in demand for mobile broadband services while optimizing 2G, 3G and evolving mobile
service models.

sub-component mixes from one vendor. Alcatel-Lucent offers various options that can be leveraged for greenfield
as well as existing networks that continue to support TDM natively as they evolve to packet. The companys mobile
backhaul solution is further enriched by Alcatel-Lucents global professional services organization, which can handle
all levels of support ranging from design and implementation to network build, operate and transfer.
As mobile operators evolve from a mix of legacy to next-generation Ethernet in support of 3G and emerging 4G/
LTE services, the solution can be scaled to provide the infrastructure needed to support the required capacity and
service delivery sophistication. Although there are a broad range of mobile backhaul solutions available from vendors, Alcatel-Lucent is one of just a few vendors that has the portfolio depth and organizational presence to deliver a
complete end-to-end solution. Alcatel-Lucents broad, scalable IP/MPLS, packet optical, packet microwave, broadband access and unified management portfolios separate it from many competitors which lack one or more of the
technologies needed to deliver a complete solution that supports all transport technologies and scales to meet the
needs of the most demanding mobile networks.

Strengths
Overall Solution (Branding), Completeness, Traction: Since the launch of the backhaul solution in October
2007, Alcatel-Lucent has over 250 packet backhaul deployments. The solution offers a migration path from TDM/
PDH backhaul to all-IP, supported by Ethernet and MPLS, and an evolution to small-cell backhaul (both indoor
and outdoor), cloud RAN (fronthaul) and LTE-Advanced. The companys marketing initiatives position the mobile
backhaul portfolio as a key component to its end-to-end, LTE-ready network architecture offering the service intelligence, flexibility and simplicity to serve the massive growth in demand for mobile broadband services.

Cell Site Solution: The solution includes multiple cell site aggregation platforms which address transport over
any media and offer migration strategies to transform TDM to packet networks. The 7705 SAR offers service-aware
IP/MPLS capabilities including TDM, ATM and Ethernet services as well as native IP routing. The 7705 SAR-M
products add integrated support for xDSL, GPON, CWDM and management of the 9500 MPR-e microwave. The
7705 SAR-W provides a compact, highly integrated cell site router with PoE capabilities and full L2/L3, timing and
OAM support. Two new small cell wireless backhaul solutions are available; the 9500 MPR-s is available in 60GHZ
and in sub-6GHz variants to support LOS and NLOS (needed for a flexible small-cell solution). The 1850 TSS
family provides T-MPLS/MPLS-TP packet optical transport services as well as native TDM. The 9500 MPR delivers maximum spectral efficiency and increased microwave link capacity while supporting stringent SLAs for TDM
and IP packet services; support for more efficient and reliable network topologies to provide more scale as well as
reduced complexity and cost; and increased operational efficiency and reduced TCO through end-to-end network
management, use of common outdoor units across all applications (full indoor, full outdoor and split-mount),
energy-efficient indoor units optimized to different site requirements, and a common operating system across all
configurations. Direct integration of the full outdoor 9500 MPR-e with the 1850 TSS or 7705 SAR further reduces the number of network elements and simplifies management. The new 7705 SAR-M can be used to leverage
existing copper or fiber broadband access infrastructure to deliver a converged TDM/packet backhaul solution. The
7705 SAR-O can be used to minimize the fiber requirements to support centralized BBU deployments and CPRI
fronthaul.
Access/Aggregation: Alcatel-Lucents mobile backhaul solution includes first and second-level access and aggregation support with a complete range of scalable platforms that are not offered by many backhaul vendors. Included
are the 9500 MPR, 7705 SAR-M, 7705 SAR-8/18, 7210 SAS, 7450 ESS and the 7750 SR for high-density/highreliability GE, 10 GE and 100 GE aggregation support. The 7705 SAR family can also provide eight CWDM channel OADM capabilities. The 7705 SAR-8 has 60G capacity and support for modular 10G interfaces. For microwave
packet transport, the 9500 MPR can aggregate TDM/ATM pseudowire and IP streams over a common ITU-T
G.8032v2, 50-ms protected carrier Ethernet network; the 1850 TSS offers sub-50 ms optical ring protection;
and the 1830 Photonic Service Switch provides zero-touch photonics and flexible and automated metro WDM
networking. The 73xx ISAM platforms, engineered for last mile backhaul, enable operators to use their broadband
access networks for backhaul.
Metro/Controller Site Aggregation: For high-scale metro and mobile core sites, the solution leverages the larger
versions of the common IP, optical, broadband and microwave portfolios. For example, the 7750 SR can be used
to provide up to 2 Tbps of switching capacity; high-density GE, 10 GE and 100 GE support; and differentiating
resiliency features, which support its role at the highest aggregation points in the network. The 7705 SAR-18 can
offer multiservice support that is suited for smaller aggregation sites (up to 140 Gbps of capacity) and leverage the
new 10 x GE and 1 x 10 GE interfaces for greater interface density support. The 1830 PSS products provide higherscale packet optical transport services. In addition, at this level in the architecture, the optical cross-connects and
zero-touch photonics of the 1830 PSS provide high-capacity transport at the lowest layer for the best cost per bit.
Management Solution: The backhaul solutions leverage Alcatel-Lucents key management systems. The 5620
SAM manager has been extended to support the 9500 MPR and the 1830 PSS, which together with its capability to
manage the LTE RAN and packet core, enable end-to-end packet performance monitoring from a common system
to deliver end-to-end QoS. The 1350 OMS manages the packet transport portfolio, including the 1850 TSS, 9500
MPR and 1830 PSS. The 5520 AMS manages the DSL/GPON broadband access portfolio. Professional services are
also available to assist with cost, planning, design and QoS analysis.
Strategic Partnerships: Since Alcatel-Lucent sources products that address all technologies needed to provide a
complete backhaul solution, the need to OEM or integrate third-party hardware platforms is minimized. Strategic

partnerships with OSS/BSS systems are still a requirement, since these systems vary considerably from operator to
operator and are not normally sourced by equipment vendors. To support integration, the company formed the
OSS Connected Partners program, which certifies interoperability with market-leading OSS applications to reduce
operator time to market and to ensure proper operation from release to release.

Weaknesses
Management Solution: Although the company stresses end-to-end management, in rare cases, a specific implementation may require the use of multiple management systems if it draws on all the transport and access technologies that can be incorporated into a solution. The 5620 SAM for the IP portfolio, the 1350 OMS for the optical
portfolio, and the 5520 AMS for the broadband portfolio could be needed for full management of an end-to-end
backhaul network. The company noted that with the increasing scope of the 5620 SAM, as evidenced by native
support for key optical, microwave and access products, the vast majority of real-world deployments are managed by
a single management system.

Buying/Selecting Criteria

Cell Site Router/Switch Solutions: Leader

Router/Switch: Cell site support is provided by the environmentally hardened multi-service 7705 SAR-M
variants, 7705 SAR-W, 7705 SAR-Wx, 7705-SAR-A and 7705 SAR-F, and for larger sites, the 7705 SAR-8 with
complete control plane redundancy. These platforms support carriers moving from TDM/PDH transport to an
all-Ethernet switched or routed infrastructure in 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE environments, with support for growing
bandwidth, scalability and granular QoS at lower operational costs. The 7210 SAS supports mobile traffic, in some
cases where the BTS/NodeB traffic is all native Ethernet, or as an Ethernet backhaul service provider demarcation
device (e.g., 7210 SAS-D).
Microwave: The 9500 MPR family provides scalable microwave transport for multiple access technologies, such as
native IP, CDMA/EVDO, UMTS/HSPDA, 2G/EDGE, LTE, LTE-Advanced and utility and government infrastructure. The 9500 MPR provides multiservice aggregation over native packet-based transport and supports any
mobile access technology carrying any service over Ethernet using standardized protocols such as CES and PWE3
for TDM and ATM, respectively. It can also operate in hybrid mode to support TDM-based architectures and
full-packet mode to service the new generations of packet-based Evolved High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) and
LTE services, without hardware changes. New variants of the solution are available to address small-cell backhaul
requirements; this includes the 60GHz and sub-6GHz versions for LOS, NLOS, P2P and P2MP capabilities.
Integrated solutions with the 7705 SAR or 1850 TSS products enable IP/MPLS and MPLS-TP microwave deployment options.
Broadband: There are multiple cell site solutions provided that cover the xDSL, GPON and EPON spaces. The,
environmentally hardened 7705 SAR-M family includes support for VDSL2, ADSL2/ADSL2+ and SHDSL. All
xDSL modules support bonding, and the VDSL2 module is vectoring-ready. The venerable 7342 FTTU ONT
family supports Ethernet and E1/T1 backhaul with synchronization and temperature hardening for GPON backhaul. GPON and EPON SFP ONTs are available, providing plug-in simplicity to enable the 7705 SAR family of
products to leverage the broadband access network for backhaul. The compact, outdoor 7705 SAR-Wx optionally
supports up to four bonded xDSL ports.
MS WAN: The 7705 SAR-M and 7705 SAR-8/18 can provide both broadband and narrowband services wherever
they are needed. For networks currently using multiservice WAN gateways and switches, the 7705 SAR and 7750

SR CES and ATM capabilities provide a well-proven solution for backhaul.

Optical: The 1850 TSS-3/TSS-5 products support any mix of TDM, pseudowire and/or native packet transport,
providing the flexibility to expand TDM networks with IP/Ethernet services and fully leveraging the existing infrastructure. The 1850 TSS-3/TSS-5 also have T-MPLS/MPLS-TP support to provide a common management plane.
The OMSN MSPPs can also be leveraged to provide services such as IP transport and Ethernet switching on top of
traditional SDH/SONET support.

Mobile Backhaul Access and Aggregation Routers/Switches: Leader

Switch/Router: First or second-level access and aggregation support is provided by the 7705 SAR-W, 7705
SAR-M, 7705 SAR-8, the larger 7705 SAR-18 and/or 7210 SAS. The 7705 SAR-8 provides greater capacity, 10G
aggregation and port density than the cell site-optimized, fixed form 7705 SAR-M and 7705 SARF models, while
the 7705 SAR-18 provides up to 140 Gbps capacity and greater port diversity and density for higher-level aggregation sites. For higher-scale requirements, the larger 7450 ESS and 7750 SR products can be used to scale up to 2
Tbps of switching capacity per chassis to meet growing backhaul aggregation requirements with Ethernet interface
support ranging from 1GE to 100GE.
Microwave: Support for the access and aggregation layers is offered by the scalable 9500 MPR, which supports
the transformation of backhaul networks from TDM/ATM to IP and provides efficient and scalable transport
of multimedia traffic by offering packet aggregation, increased bandwidth and optimized Ethernet connectivity.
The 9500 MPR-e is also available to support full outdoor deployments and is also part of the integrated solutions
with the 7705 SAR or 1850 TSS products to enable IP/MPLS and MPLS-TP microwave deployment options. To
support the aggregation needs of small cells, as well as higher-capacity LTE cell sites, the 9500 MPR supports up to
24 microwave connections at dense microwave hub sites, including the ability to bond up to four radio channels in
each of these directions.
Broadband: Support for access and aggregation of broadband traffic is provided by the 7302 ISAM, 7330 FTTN
ISAM, 7342 FTTU ISAM and 7360 ISAM. The ISAM solution set also includes the 7330 FTTN and 7342 fiberto-the-user (FTTU)/passive optical networking (PON) and multiple 735x series FTTx platforms, which deliver
additional options to the operator. A new GPON SFP ONT is available which provides plug-in simplicity to enable
the 7705 SAR-W to leverage the broadband access network for backhaul.
MS WAN: Support for hub sites can be provided by the 7705 SAR, which delivers strong support for ATM-based
3G mobile transport networks as well as for converged 2G/3G mobile transport networks. Its ability to support
ATM, IP and MPLS offers versatility and scalability to handle projected mobile network traffic growth.
Optical: Versions of the 1850 TSS, such as the 1850 TSS-5R, 1850 TSS-40 and 1850 TSS-100, deliver T-MPLS/
MPLS-TP packet optical services with full QoS capabilities and high reliability, such as sub-50ms ring protection. The OMS multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs) provide services such as IP transport and Ethernet
switching on top of traditional SDH/SONET optical backhaul. Operators with WDM assets can leverage the 1830
PSS-1/PSS-4 WDM edge device to transport backhaul traffic at the lower layers of the network.

Mobile Backhaul Metro/Controller Site Routers/Switches: Leader

Switch/Router: IP/MPLS support for metro or controller sites, which require much higher scale and performance
than the access/aggregation layers, can be provided by the 7750 SR. The 7750 SR fully supports high-scale edge
routing and switching functions and delivers router-based support. It supports scalable 100G Ethernet interfaces
and currently has the ability to scale up to 2 Tbps of switching capacity to meet expected growth requirements.
The 7750 SRs independently validated high scalability and differentiating resiliency features support its role at the

highest services edge aggregation points and in network and central offices. The recently announced 7950 XRS can
also address mobile backbone applications and supports common IP/MPLS networking and software with the rest
of the IP/MPLS backhaul portfolio. The 7750 SR also supports other wireless functions such as LTE IPSec security
gateway, 2G/3G GGSN gateway, Wi-Fi Gateway and LTE Evolved Packet Core P-GW/S-GW. The 7705 SAR-18 is
also suitable for smaller metro sites where up to 140 Gbps of capacity and 10GE Ethernet interfaces are required.
Microwave: Support for high-density mobile traffic can be supported by the 9500 MPR configured for multichannel operations. The system is offered in all-indoor and split-mount configurations.
Broadband: Support for hub site and metro scale aggregation is delivered by the 7750 SR. The flagship 7750 SR
is available in multiple chassis sizes, can scale up to 2 Tbps and support GE, 10 GE and 100 GE, as well as traditional ATM and TDM interfaces.
MS WAN: Support for multiservice access and aggregation is provided by the 7705 SAR and 7750 SR product
families. The systems deliver IP, Ethernet, frame relay, ATM and circuit emulation services.
Optical: Higher-level aggregation support is provided by the 1850 TSS and 1830 PSS products. The 1850 TSS100/160/320 feature high SONET/SDH and Ethernet port densities. Dense chassis configurations scale network
capacity without dedicating additional physical resources, thereby helping reduce the total cost of ownership.
T-MPLS/MPLS-TP enables a highly reliable and scalable end-to-end packet transport solution. WDM and wavelength routing is provided by the 1830 PSS, with end-to-end optical/IP 100G connectivity supported across the
7750 SR routers and 1830 PSS transport network.

Mobile Backhaul Management Solutions: Leader

Management for Router/Switch: The 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) can be customized to fit specific
operational environments and provide a unified end-to-end management solution for the devices contained in the
portfolio. SAM consists of four modules that provide: 1) element management - FCAPS functionality; 2) network
infrastructure configuration, service provisioning, scripting and customer management; 3) service assurance; and 4)
OAM service-diagnostics and OSS integration tools. In addition to the IP product portfolio (7750 SR, 7705 SAR,
7450 ESS and 7210 SAS), the system also manages optical, microwave and broadband devices, as noted in this
report. With support for mobile backhaul, packet core and RAN, the 5620 SAM provides complete management
for wireless networks.
Management for Optical: The 1350 Optical Management System (OMS) manages many technologies, including connectivity services based on Ethernet, transport multi-protocol label switching (T-MPLS), MPLS-TP, SDH/
SONET, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technologies and microwave solutions. The 1350 OMS supports multiple network management functions to simplify SDH, SONET and optical Ethernet transport network
operations. The 1350 OMS manages next-generation products including the 9500 MPR, SONET/SDH MSPP,
WDM and cross-connect transport systems. In addition, the 5620 SAM can be used to manage the 9500 MPR
(microwave) and 1830 PSS (WDM) systems.
Management (Broadband): The 5520 Access Management System (AMS) provides element management support for the ISAM broadband access product family (DSL and fiber-based access). Capabilities include Java-based
configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting. OSS integration is achieved by means of the TL1 gateway product
or through the simplified integration capability offered by state-of-the-art Web services product (XML/SOAP). Currently, the 5620 SAM and 1350 OMS do not offer management support for Alcatel-Lucents ISAM access devices.
