Spe Salvi Saved in Hope (Eng)

Written by Pope Emeritus

Benedict XVI in 2007

Theme:

based on one of the three theological virtues:

- love in 2005 Deus caritas est ("God is Love"),

- hope in this encyclical, and

- faith in 2013 Lumen fidei ("The Light of Faith")
Its main theme is Christian hope, but as Benedict
makes explicit, it is also about faith. Specifically, it is
profoundly concerned with the faith in eternal life.

BRIEF SUMMARY
Spe

SPE

Salvi
- 2nd Encyclical letter by
Pope Benedict XVI

SALVI facti sumusin hope we were saved, says

Saint Paul to the Romans, and likewise to us (Rom 8:24)

Spe Salvi

Paragraphs 4-6

- defined Christ's role as a revolutionary in the Roman empire and its

implications for Christians.

Hope and Faith

Pope Benedict XVI describes the close relationship

between hope and faith in the Scripture

The Letter to the Hebrews links the fullness of faith

(10:22) to the confession of our hope without wavering
(10:23);

Peter urges Christians to be ready to give a reason for

their hope (1 Pet 3:15), that is their faith; and St. Paul
wrote to the Ephesians that before Christ they were
without hope and without God in the world (Eph 2:12).

The Pope notes the electrifying impact on people in the

earliest period as they abandoned the various pagan
religions.

The Pope argues persuasively that Christian hope should

have the same dramatic impact on the contemporary
world

Hope and Redemption

First six chapters:

- theological in nature but often use historical examples

to highlight applications to daily life.

Christian Hope

- as transformative because it offers assurance that

"life will not end in emptiness".

The Reality of the Kingdom of God

Faith enables us to experience the reality of Gods

kingdom in this present life.

Hope is not purely individual, but directed always toward

a union with Christ, and through Christ to one another.

Salvation is always a social reality.

Rationalism, science and technology, and politics have

become vehicles of corporate hope.

Settings for Hope

First is prayer, in which we must learn that we cannot

pray against others.

The second is action. Only those who are full of hope

can accept suffering, and even turn it into a hymn of
praise.

The third is Judgment. the Christian notion of the Last

Judgment is rooted not in terror but in hope, hope not
just for individual salvation but for the restoration of the
entire order of things.

Final Notes

Purgatory is an essential component of Christian hope

precisely because many peoples lives are
characterized by a desire for the good that is never
completely extinguished, despite many weaknesses and
sins.

Hope is always essentially also hope for others; only thus

is it truly hope for ones self too.
