Save A Life Foundation Announces New Illinois State Director

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 – The Save A Life Foundation (SALF) announced today the hiring of Carrie Viehweg as
Illinois State Director.

SALF’s President and Founder Carol Spizzirri said, “I am delighted to have found in Carrie someone with both the
expertise and compassion to operate in this important capacity for SALF.”

A recent graduate of the University of Illinois in Springfield, Viehweg holds a Master’s degree in public administration
and a bachelor’s degree in political studies. For the past eight years, she has worked in both federal and state
government, leaving a position with the Illinois State Senate at the end of January to come to SALF.

“I met Carol while I was working for the Senate, where she was lobbying for funding for SALF,” said Viehweg.
"Having heard the history of SALF and after meeting Carol personally, I was inspired to join the non-profit world."

SALF was founded by Spizzirri in 1993 after the tragic death of her daughter, Christina Jean Spizzirri, who bled to
death after a hit-and-run incident. Because the first responders who arrived at the incident scene were not trained in Life
Supporting First Aid (LSFA), they stood by helplessly waiting for emergency medical service (EMS) providers to arrive
some thirty minutes later.

Spizzirri, immediately recognized the need for a change. With much research and lobbying, she was instrumental in
passing an Illinois State mandate requiring that all police and fire professionals be trained in LSFA and have annual
refresher courses.

Spizzirri later met with Dr. Peter Safar and Dr. Henry Heimlich, respective fathers of CPR and the Heimlich maneuver,
who encouraged her to train the masses in LSFA skills, beginning with children. SALF’s mission has since shifted
primarily to focus on the no-cost training of schoolchildren from kindergarten through high school.

“By training children (K-12), we are generating more responsible citizens who can handle emergencies proactively and
who can successfully teach their parents the skills they have learned, as demonstrated with programs that train children
in fire safety, seatbelt use, and recycling,” said Spizzirri recently.

Viehweg will be primarily responsible for developing and managing local SALF branches in Illinois, as well as securing
funds and training opportunities for them.

“I am looking forward to a long and fulfilling career with SALF," she said.

Christine Radogno has served in the Illinois Senate since 1997. She currently represents the 41st District in Cook,
DuPage and Will counties in Illinois. Senator Radogno cosponsored "KidCare," Illinois' health insurance program for
children. Unsurprisingly, she also was a strong advocate at the Capitol for the efforts of Save A Life Foundation
(SALF). As a freshman senator and until recently, Senator Radogno has leaned on her personal staffer, Carrie
Viehweg. Radogno acquired Viehweg from State Senator Walter Dudyzc (Cook County, Illinois), who thirteen years
ago was also a major SALF supporter.

With a long history with SALF from within the confines of the State Capitol, Viehweg recently left her state position to
join the SALF team as its Illinois State Director in its Springfield office. A recent graduate of the University of Illinois
with a MA in public administration and a BA in political studies, Carrie has assumed the responsibility of running
SALF’s Illinois state business and will oversee its six current Branch Sites. It is her goal to continue opening as many
SALF Sites as possible in order to empower all Illinois children with life-sustaining skills to make them emergency
prepared.

Carol Spizzirri, SALF’s president and founder, was deeply moved by the warm wishes Senator Radogno bestowed to
Viehweg as she began her new career with SALF. Most members of the Illinois House and Senate and their staffers
have known Spizzirri since she began stomping the Capitol floors in early 1993.

“I may have lost two children, but I have gained a state’s worth of friends, Carrie being one of them,” said Spizzirri.
“I’m excited to have her join our team. Her youth and eagerness will no doubt help her to develop her statewide
position.”

The news rang throughout the halls of the State Capitol just minutes after Viehweg’s announcement. Although
saddened by the fact Carrie will no longer be a part of their daily lives, both Democratic and Republican well-wishers
applauded Carrie for joining SALF. Quoting former State Senate President, Pate Philips, Viehweg said, “I’ll miss the
clowns, not the circus!” and “To witness a seed turn into a bud…I’m anxious to see the blossom.”

The highly respected Illinois Deputy Chief of Staff of Public Safety, Colonel Jill Morgenthaler, identified national EMS
needs at the Emergency Management Agency’s 2006 annual conference. The Colonel captured the attention of Carol
Spizzirri, Founder and President of the Save A Life Foundation (SALF). Spizzirri relates, “Her views of Pre-EMS and
EMS concur with SALF's mission, and we look forward to working with Colonel Morgenthaler in streamlining the
emergency response [system] in an effort to save lives be it man-made, natural, and personal emergencies." Spizzirri
continues, "She also supports strengthening EMS from the local and state level and a EMT course as a prerequisite for
a nursing career." Carrie Viehweg, SALF Illinois State Director was likewise impressed with Colonel Morgenthaler
reporting, “EMS will benefit under Colonel Morgenthaler’s direction as never before. She has what it takes to bring
forth the long awaited change the industry needs. The Colonel understands the issues and is not intimated by them.”

SALF Friday September 21st marks the first Save A Life Foundation (SALF) “Perry Medic Open” at Timber
Lakes Golf Course, Staunton IL. The charity golf outing brings together state leaders, EMS providers
and golf enthusiasts for a great day and for a great cause. Proceeds raised at the “Perry Medic Open”
will help bring SALF life supporting first aid (LSFA) programs to the schoolchildren of Macoupin
County by local EMS providers who will be the classroom instructors. Illinois State Senator Deanna
Demuzio (49th Dist-Macoupin Co.) one of the event’s Host’s said “I am really excited to be a part of
Affiliate [ Search the Perry Medic Open, we are thankful for the support we have received so far and it should be a
of: great day. The training that this event will help make possible in Macoupin County is what is really
rewarding”. State Senator David Luechtefeld (58th Dist.) another host for the Perry Medic Open said
citizen^, “I have been familiar with the important work of SALF for some time now and am proud to participate

in this year’s Open. Through events like this I hope to bring SALF to schools in my district in the near
future” added Luechtefeld.

The first annual “Perry Medic Open” will be a scramble format 18 hole golf outing and luncheon, with
first tee off at 10am Friday morning and raffles and prize drawings taking place throughout the day.

SALF IL State Director Carrie Viehweg said “I want to recognize the sponsorships of Senate
Republican Leader, Frank Watson, Senator Gary Dahl, State Representatives Angelo “Skip” Saviano,
and Raymond Poe, and our special thanks to the Macoupin County Democrats which will make this
event successful”.

SALF Pres/Fndr Carol Spizzirri will be attending the “Perry Medic Open” and expressed her thanks to
all involved, “The support of the legislators here in Illinois has made a huge life saving difference over
the years. To have them here with us for this event really shows their commitment to the kids of
Illinois, I’m just glad “Perry Medic” is doing the golfing and not me!” joked Spizzirri.

SALF “Coalition of the Caring”

Forum Highlights Local Preparedness Efforts

Maywood, Illinois… Save A Life Foundation (SALF) hosted the first “Coalition of the Caring” forum on Saturday,
September 1, at Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood. Community leaders and stakeholders discussed issues of
safety and preparedness in our neighborhoods and schools, and vowed to work together to find solutions to the growing
problems of violence, especially affecting school children. SALF Director of Operations, Vince Davis announced the
passage of the organization’s Community Response System Initiative, or “CRSI ACT” within the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security, that is expected to provide a program to train children in cities and towns across the nation in Life
Sustaining First Aid Skills. Illinois Homeland Security Director of Public Safety Col. Jill Morgenthaler accepted the
“CRSI Award” for her efforts in support of the initiative.

The Coalition of Caring event was held in conjunction with September activities marking Save A Life Month and
National Preparedness Month as designated by the Department of Homeland Security Citizen Corps. SALF is a national
affiliate of the Citizen Corps program, which promotes local preparedness efforts in chapters throughout the country.
Col. Jill Morgenthaler told the Coalition members, “Some of our children live their whole lives in the danger zone.
Unlike our soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, they don’t have training, they don’t have protective gear, and they
don’t have anyone watching their backs.”

SALF’s Founder/President Carol Spizzirri accounted her experience as she flew into Washington D.C. on 9/11 while
the terrorist attack unfolded at the World Trade Center. “We touched down at Regan Airport and the pilot tearfully
announced the events in New York. We were diverted to Dulles as the Pentagon was being hit”, she recalled. Spizzirri
said the experience was one of fear and uncertainty, where no one knew what to do next. “That is why training our
children and adults to care for the ill or injured in an emergency is the most important link in the chain of survival until
emergency professionals can step in,” Spizzirri said.

Among the Coalition speakers was Chicago Police Officer Ronald Holt, father of 16-year-old Julian High School
student Blair Holt, who was slain on a Chicago Transit Authority School bus in May of this year. Mr. Holt spoke of the
legacy of his son, and the terrible pain he and his wife have endured after losing their only child to a senseless act of
violence. Holt was presented with a Save A Life Foundation Certificate of Merit in honor of his son’s ultimate sacrifice
to save one of his classmates from the gunfire in which four other students were wounded. “Schools should be a safe
haven for our children, as well as creating safe passage as they go to and from school, ” Holt said.

Also speaking at the three-hour event was Vance Henry, Director of Chicago Police Department’s Community
Alternative Policing Strategy (C.A.P.S.). Mr. Henry thanked SALF for its efforts in promoting life saving skills in
Chicago’s schools, and promised to work closely with the Coalition to address the violence issues. Other organizations
represented included Cook County Sheriffs Department Community Outreach, ABJ Community Services, National
Crime Prevention Coalition, Illinois Student Assistance Commission, and Lincoln’s Challenge Academy, the National
Guard program for at-risk teens that mentors students from throughout the state to ensure they graduate from high
school. Lincoln’s Challenge adapted the SALF training last year as part of the school’s regular curriculum. LCA
Director Command Sergeant Major Peter Thomas said, “We applaud SALF for its efforts and are looking forward to
working with them in the years to come.”

SALF is planning future events including a Youth Summit that will provide youth with an opportunity to express their
concerns and share their ideas regarding safety, security and training. The Youth Summit is expected to include
Coalition of the Caring members, community leaders and educators

 Carpentersville Unanimously Passes
Save A Life Resolution
On Tuesday November 4, 2008, the Village of Carpentersville Board
of Trustees passed a resolution approving an agreement between the
Village and the Illinois Save A Life Foundation. with a vote of 5-0. The
SALF Illinois and the Village Fire Department have agreed to work
together to help train 7th and 8th graders in Carpentersville Middle
School in life supporting first aid. The classes will be conducted by
local fire fighters and plan to begin December 2008.

Chief John Schuldt, Mayor Bill Sarto and Save A Life Foundation have
been working together to develop the program in Carpentersville and
the final step was the passage by the Board of Trustees.

Save A Life Foundation (SALF) is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization

dedicated to training school children in life supporting first aid skills.
With the motto... “Trained hands save lives”, SALF is the only national
affiliate of the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizen Corps
specializing in emergency preparedness for school aged children and
youth. Since its inception in 1993, more than one million children and
youth have been trained in SALF’s basic life supporting first aid skills.
The Carpentersville Fire Department has been trained by SALF to
carry out the youth training. All of Carpentersville instructors are
credentialed EMS professionals. Instructors will be teaching skills
they use on a daily basis as first responders.

Mayor Sarto who is in full support of the SALF program is happy to

be moving forward with the program and stated “I am excited to start
the program and hope to continue it for years to come and expand
it’s scope. It will benefit our community and is a great help to any
youngster, the students will benefit from the practical knowledge that
will help them long into their lives”.

“Local businesses are very supportive of the partnership between

SALF and the Village of Carpentersville and have played a key
role in fundraising to pay for the training. We are looking forward to
expanding corporate donations so the children of Carpentersville can
be emergency prepared” said Carrie Viehweg, SALF Illinois State
Director.
