SelectionofMain&DeltaContactors
Main Contactor:
Required
Ie(AC3) > 78A
Im > 270A
Ib > 468A

Available (MNX 80)

80A
800A
640A

Hence, 80A (AC3) Contactor is Okay for this application.

Delta Contactor:
Required
Ie(AC3) > 78A
Im > 468A
Ib > 468A

Available (MNX 80)

80A
800A
640A

Hence, 80A (AC3) Contactor is Okay for this application.

SelectionofMain&DeltaContactors
But, the full load current of the motor is derived at
assuming certain efficiencies & power factor. In
practice, these may vary. So, whenever the motor
full load current and the contactor rating are very
close, it is better to go for the next higher size of
contactor. So, in this case too since the motor full
load current (Phase) is 78A & the contactor rating
is 80A, it is advisable to opt for the next higher
size contactor, which is 95A. So, for Main & Delta
contactors we have to select 95A Contactor (MNX
95).

SelectionofStarContactor
Star Contactor:
Required
Ie(AC3) > 45A
Im - N.A.
Ib > 270A

Available (MNX 45)

45A
450A
360A

Hence, 45A (AC3) Contactor is Okay for this

application. But, 270A is 6 times the contactor
rating. If the contactor regularly breaks this
amount of current, as it happens in a star-delta
starter, its life would reduce.

SelectionofContactor
So, one can go for the next higher size contactor, say,
50A.
As far the Icw ratings of the contactors both the Star
& the Main contactors will have to tolerate 270A for 8
seconds. The 50 A Star contactor, whose Icw rating as
per IS is 400 A for 10s. Then this can withstand 270 A
for 21.94 sec. But, the starting time is only 8s. So, no
problem.
Similarly, the 95A main contactor can withstand 760A
for 10s, which corresponds to 270A for 79.23s, which
is much more than the starting time. So, okay.

SelectionofOLR
Selection of OLR:
OLR to be connected in Phase Circuit to reduce cost.
Phase Current = 78A
Relays available: 66 110A (MNX-R4) &
60 100A (MNX-R5)
But, MNX-R5 cannot be mounted on to the MNX 95
contactor. So, select 66 110A (MNX-R4) OLR. Set
at 78A.
Relay operating time (minimum) for 270A (3.5 times)
is 15s. This is more than the starting time of 8s. So,
relay selected is okay.

SelectionofHRCFuse
It is to be noted that this 160A Fuse is
suitable - only when considered
individually. In co-ordination with OLR &
Contactor, this may not be suitable. Lets

Type2Coordination CaseStudy
SelectionofHRCFuse
Remember! we had selected 95A Contactors for
Main & Delta contactors for this motor, whose
breaking capacity is at least 760A. Now, if we
select the 160A Fuse, as can be seen from the chart,
it will allow the OLR to operate first for all faults
up to about 740A (phase current) and the fuse takes
over at about 740A (phase current), which is very
close to the ultimate breaking capacity of the
contactors. Thus, Type-2 Co-ordination is
ensured. The starter components selected are
okay.
