Job Opening: Lead Organizer
The Organization

Action for Justice is a multi-issue grassroots organization made up of low and moderate income
people working together for community empowerment and social and economic justice. Action
for Justice supports universal human rights, addresses the root causes of poverty, promotes
community development without displacement and mobilizes members for mutual support and
campaigns for social and economic justice. NA4J is a member-led direct action organization
with a focus on community issues while working in coalition with housing, labor, religious, civil
rights, peace and other progressive organizations. Current priority issue areas include affordable
housing, tenants’ rights, jobs, living wages and worker rights.

Organizer position responsibilities:


The Lead Organizer will be the lead staff person working closely with and under the direction of
the volunteer Steering Committee to build the membership base, develop leaders, plan issue
campaigns and mobilize members to take action. Some administrative, office management,
fundraising and related volunteer coordination duties are also required. This is an organizing
job, and calls for long and irregular hours, including some evenings and weekends. An overview
of responsibilities includes:

Base-Building: Meeting monthly goals for recruiting dues-paying members through


doorknocking, house meetings, one-on-one meetings, tenant organizing, etc.
Campaigns: Working with committees and volunteer leaders to develop issue campaigns,
mobilize members into action and evaluate progress.
Fundraising: Coordinating and implementing fundraising plans, including membership dues,
grassroots events and grant proposals.
Supervision: Supervising and holding accountable a small staff and interns.
Leadership Development: Helping to encourage, foster and develop the abilities of members to
play leading roles in developing and building the organization.
Committee Support and Development: Organizing and supporting issue committees.
Administration. Administrative and office management duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years professional grassroots organizing experience.
- Solid commitment to social and economic justice.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently in a well-organized way toward goals.
- A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and delegate responsibility.
- Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
- Proficiency in database management, word processing and desktop publishing.
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus. Persons of color, LGBT persons encouraged to apply.
