INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Safety systems
SpinlineTM safety I&C safety technology you can trust

Rolls-Royce understands that nuclear instrumentation

and control (I&C) systems have to meet demanding
functional and non-functional objectives. For this
reason all of our safety systems feature SpinlineTM
technology, a modular digital solution platform
installed in more than 60 PWR and VVER nuclear
reactors all over the world.
Compliant with international nuclear safety I&C
requirements, SpinlineTM enables utilities to improve
the safety and availability of their nuclear power
plants, with unproblematic maintenance due to its
modular, scalable and flexible design.
SpinlineTM can be used in any safety system such as
the Reactor Protection System (RPS) and Neutron
Instrumentation System (NIS), in new nuclear power
plants and for the modernisation of existing I&C
systems in established plants.

Reactor Protection System

When it comes to safety, the Reactor Protection
System (RPS) is the most critical I&C system. The RPS
utilises the functionalities of the Reactor Trip System
(RTS) as well as the Engineering Safety Features
Actuation System (ESFAS). It monitors vital reactor
operation parameters and automatically shuts down
the reactor and determines the corrective actions to
be taken. The RTS initiates rapid control rod insertion
to mitigate the consequences of anticipated
operating occurrences or design basis events The
ESFAS initiates and controls safety equipment
designed to remove heat or prevent radioactive
release.
Digital Neutron Instrumentation System
The Digital Neutron Instrumentation System
(NIS) allows monitoring of instantaneous nuclear
power, power fluctuations, and radial/axial power
distribution in the reactor. The NIS is compliant with
existing interfaces and has the highest level of safety
and ease of use, reliable operation and simplified
maintenance.

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Diesel Sequencing System

Operating together with the RPS, the Diesel
Sequencing System provides the logic to start the
diesel generator set and load the safeguard actions
according to pre-established time sequences in the
event of loss and subsequent restoration of Offsite
Power. The sequencing system will reduce spare parts
inventory and improve availability due to integrated
continuity tests for relay coils. The Diesel Sequencing
System is suitable for any type of nuclear power
plant, such as PWR, VVER, BWR or PHWR. It is 1E
qualified and meets international nuclear standards.

We understand
that nuclear I&C
systems must meet
demanding functional
and non-functional
objectives.

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Control and monitoring systems

Control and monitoring technology
designed to maximise plant availability

RollsRoyce provides a wide range of digital nuclear

control and monitoring systems, enabling nuclear
utilities to maximise plant performance safely and
efficiently.
All our systems are designed to simplify operation,
diagnostics and maintenance, while improving safety.
Boron Meter - Boronline
The Boron Meter provides nuclear power plant
operators with a permanent record of the boron
concentration contained in a water cooling circuit
by way of continuous sampling and real time
measurements. This information is used in the
process to drive the reactor power.
One of the most important safety actions generated
by the equipment is the dilution alarm, which
automatically activates in case of an unexpected
homogeneous dilution of the boron concentration.
All of these features ensure safety, increased reliability
and stability of measurement.

Digital Rod Control System - Rodline

Designed to safely and reliably manage the Control
Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) within the nuclear
reactor, the Rodline is the latest generation of Rod
Control System developed by Rolls-Royce and
is based on 40 years of proven experience and
successful operation in more than 80 nuclear reactors
worldwide.
The flexible and modular design means that the
Rodline can be installed in a range of different reactor
types to meet the requirements of both new build
and retro fit markets.
Our technology is scalable and adaptable to suit
various types of CRDM mechanisms.
Rod Position Indication System (RPIS)
Specifically designed for a PWR nuclear power plant,
the Rod Position Indication System measures and
delivers information which is used to monitor the
consistency of individual rod positions, their positions
within each group of rods, and between a rod
position requested and position reached.
Our RPIS is a qualified and fully adaptable 1E system.
The RPIS simplifies periodic testing and maintenance
as electronics are located separately from the reactor
building.

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Plant Monitoring System (PMS)

The Plant Monitoring System for nuclear plant
process computers is a high-performance, integrated
software and hardware solution designed for plant
monitoring in real time. This system improves the
decision making process and efficiency of day-to-day
plant operations, as well as facilitating standardisation
for data archiving, analysing, alarming, trending,
displaying, and reporting.
Enhanced Annunciator System (EAS): The EAS is
a network based software and database driven
system with advanced scan, log, and alarm features
that are completely user configurable.
Transient Recording and Analysis (TRA) System: The
TRA system provides high speed data acquisition,
storage,
Retrieval, analysis, and presentation of plant
process data. Rod Worth Minimiser (RWM) System:
The RWM system monitors rod positions and rod
movements on a Boiling Water Reactor.
A full suite of nuclear plant software applications
for all reactor types has been developed providing
a basic foundation on which sophisticated nuclear
power and plant performance software applications
may be created.

07

In-core Instrumentation System

The In-core Instrumentation System allows reactor
operators to obtain information on the distribution
of the neutrons flux as well as indications relative to
the mapping of the temperatures inside the core of
the reactor. Information given by the system is used
to check the calibration and response of ex-core flux
detectors; monitor fuel burn-up and fuel inventories;
and determine the position of a stuck rod.
The In-core Instrumentation System improves
operation and provides operators with new
capabilities ranging from troubleshooting and
analysis archiving to creation of new scenarios and
follow-up of operations.

All our systems are

designed to simplify
operation, diagnostics
and maintenance, while
improving safety.

10

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Instrumentation and hardware

Designed to meet the most stringent and
internationally recognised standards

RollsRoyce designs, manufactures, installs and

maintains a range of long life instrumentation and
hardware solutions.
Neutron Detectors
Excore neutron detectors provide measurement
of the reactor neutron flux for the neutron
instrumentation system (NIS) to continuously
monitor instantaneous nuclear power, power
fluctuations and radial/axial power distribution in the
reactor.
With an installed base in more than 100 nuclear
reactors, Rolls-Royce designs, manufactures and
installs three different types of Neutron Detectors:
Boron-lined proportional counter for the low
level range compensated boron-lined ionization
chamber for the intermediate level range and noncompensated boron-lined ionization chamber for the
power level range.
Our designs amalgamate different detector types and
comply with all international standards.

Pressurised Heater Control

Our pressurised heater control includes the variable
heating unit that adapts its heating power when
pressure differs from the pressure set-point. The
variable heating unit is powered by two identical
regulation cabinets (heating selectors) on each unit
and the heating selectors increase and decrease the
applied power if the pressure drops or rises. They are
activated by the powering-up time control for the
resistors or heaters.
Nuclear Displacement Transmitters
Designed specifically for nuclear power application,
the BIbloc nuclear displacement transmitters provide
precise and reliable measurement of valve positions
inside the containment area of a nuclear power plant.
Offering safe and reliable operation, with the
electronic section located outside of the radioactive
containment area, the innovative structure also
allows high quality data to be transmitted by
removing the impact of any environmental
conditions. This simple two part design improves
ease of operation and maintenance, is manufactured
in accordance with quality class Q1 and is also
available in K1 qualified nuclear safety class.

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

Nuclear Pressure Transmitter

The BIbloc nuclear pressure transmitter measures
differential, relative or absolute pressures inside the
containment of nuclear power plants under normal
or accidental conditions. Designed specifically for
nuclear power plants, the sensors are different
according to the measurement range but the
electrical converter is common to each type of
sensor. The Bibloc Nuclear Pressure Transmitter

11
07

has higher safety and reliability as the impact on

the converter of any environmental conditions
surrounding the transmitter is removed.
The modular design results in easier maintenance
and is compliant with international standards
Available in K1 and K2 nuclear safety classes and
manufactured in accordance with quality class Q1.
