For Mortimer Adler, Circumstantial Freedom of Self-Realization is the

ability and the opportunity to perform whatever action we choose, that is,
freedom from external forces, obstacles, and natural limitations that restrict
or compel our actions, while Acquired Freedom of Self-Perfection is the idea
that we are only free when our decisions are for reasons and we are not
slaves to our passions, and in this paper I propose to show that freedom for
Mario Tatang Maghari is not in any of these two.
In the beginning of the film, Tatang showed up as a straight up guy
who would do anything to provide for his family. He has a job which requires
a person to be in jail in order to acquire that position for the job; to kill
people outside prison. Aside from the huge load of cash he receives from his
job, another advantage is he could spend some time with his family when he
is on the job. This means he is not really in total restriction of doing what he
wants and therefore he does not primarily strive for Circumstantial Freedom
this is not freedom for him, he does not need this. A testament of this is
when he was given parole, rather than being excited of being freed, he was
more worried about losing the job. He is not focused on having freedom from
the prison walls.
At the time when the parole was given, he has the ultimate chance to
change and live happily with his family, officially leave the job, and become a
new & better person to gain Acquired Freedom of Self-Perfection. However,
just before leaving prison, he killed his job partner in fear of losing the job,
and right after leaving prison he killed his wifes lover in front of his wife and
his beloved daughter. Instead of taking the chance to become good, he took
the other road. Instead of making moral choices, he satisfied his desires. He
could have been freed from the walls, but still he will not free from himself.
Mario Maghari is a self-centered greedy no-moral person. People at his
age do not particularly chase money anymore but he however still continued
the job to kill for money. You may argue that he will continue doing this to
provide for his daughter, but having killed a man in front of your daughter
also means making a giant barrier between you and her. There is no way his
daughter will be accepting money from him anymore. All Mario Maghari is
now is a lonely man with lots of money. Maybe that is freedom for him.
Maybe freedom for him is having people around him who he can trust and
who trusts him. Or maybe he just made a big mistake killing that man and
now he regrets about it every night for he cant talk to his daughter
anymore. Who knows? One thing is for sure, Circumstantial Freedom and
Acquired Freedom is not what he wants.
