SUBJECT INTRODUCTION
Communication Skills is a four-credit subject in the first semester of BBA
program. This program would enable the learner for a fulfilling career
especially to those concerning business and industry. This subject is an
essential part of any typical management education curriculum.
The organizations are becoming more organized and there is an inevitable
need for proper communication. Be it the reports, general documentation,
official letters/correspondence. Proper communication skills are needed at
every step for each and every employee working in an organization.
Understanding of good communication skills is instrumental towards the
success of any manager. This SLM includes topics related to both verbal
and written communication. The SLM designed for this subject aims to
provide a thorough knowledge on topics like communication in
organizations and employment communication. It also includes details about
report writing, meetings, listening skills, letter writing, circulars, memos etc.
This subject provides a base for basic communication skills for the learners.
Unit 1: Introduction to Communication
In this unit, the basic idea of communication and different stages of
communication are discussed. It also talks about barriers in communication.
Unit 2: Types of Communication
This unit deals with different types of communication.
Unit 3: Listening Skills
This unit explains about the types of listening, barriers to listening and also
the strategies for effective listening.
Unit 4: Language for Communication
This unit explains the importance and general principles of effective writing
skills. It also discusses the techniques to improve the writing skills.
Unit 5: Communication in Organizations
This unit explains about the internal and external communication.

Unit 6: Communication Network


This unit briefly explains about the formal and informal communication.
Unit 7: Writing a Business Letter
This unit particularly deals with the business letters. It also explains the
difference between personal and business letters. The unit illustrates the
structure of different types of business letters.
Unit 8: Writing Memos, Circulars and Notices
This unit describes the essential aspects of writing the memos, circulars an
notices.
Unit 9: Report Writing
This unit discusses the basic details about writing a report.
Unit 10: Writing E-mail
This unit discusses the importance of e-mail and also the essentials of
writing an e-mail message.
Unit 11: Oral Communication Skills
This unit aims at equipping the learner with good oral communication skills
and the ways to make effective presentation using the visual aids.
Unit 12: Meetings
This unit discusses the concept of meetings, different types of meetings and
steps to hold effective meetings.
Unit 13: Reading Skills
This unit discusses the importance of reading skills, and how to distinguish
between various types of reading. Techniques to increase the reading
efficiency are also discussed.
Unit 14: Employment Communication Resume
This unit discusses the importance of employment communication, and also
the essentials of writing the resume and the cover letter.
Unit 15: Employment Communication Job Interview
This unit explains the second step towards employment communication, i.e.
job interview. It explains the process of interview and different job interview
techniques.
