What in the world isnt History? To see how consequences of historical events are still
apparent today is highly appealing to me. This not only teaches us about our past, but has
impacted on the lives we lead in the present. Having spent time at various museums and
exhibitions, I have been left inspired by the history around me, which was extended by my
study of the Cold War and Nazi Germany at GCSE. Working as a volunteer at Wycombe
Chair Museum has also supported my decision to pursue History to degree level, teaching
me that History is more than just a subject; it also defines our future.

History has enabled me to efficiently formulate different opinions on a wide range of topics,
especially when considering the sixteenth century and conflicts regarding faith. I have
acquired valuable skills; particularly in evaluation and analysis. I have had the opportunity to
read widely, write about the various fascinating topics and analyse the work of many
respected Historians, including the controversial opinions of Christopher Haigh. The
analytical and writing skills that I have gained from studying History are invaluable and will
certainly support me in a History degree.

The creative writing opportunities are a highlight of my English studies, teaching me the
importance of structure whilst using imaginative techniques to express myself. This certainly
applies to History, where I have strongly developed in expressing myself effectively. In
Biology, my coursework is based on the fieldwork residential trip. This taught me how to
approach a real life biological situation, independently researching my chosen topic in order
to find sufficient evidence to support a claim. This can without a doubt be applied to History,
where logical conclusions must be drawn from a limited amount of evidence.

The diversity and range of choice offered by a History degree intrigues me, and I shall relish
the independence in the reading, writing, and research. I have a great interest in many
different areas of history, such as the representation of women throughout the ages, and the
developments influenced by inspirational movements.

My participation and leadership in the schools Debating Society has greatly developed my
confidence in arguing my ideas and judgements. Studying History has advanced my
communication skills and ability to express my personal views on historical events.

My work experience at Priory Pharmacy allowed me to gain confidence in the management
of people, increasing my poise and manner when addressing different issues. The
experience taught me the importance of responsibility, developing strong communication
skills as a result of interacting with customers. This would greatly benefit me with leadership
and teamwork skills. I have also had the opportunity to work in telesales with the company
My Planet. Being surrounded by a team with the same goal was highly motivating, and
having successfully worked with others, my group skills would be transferable and applicable
to a History degree.

The study of History to degree level appeals to me thoroughly, and is a challenge that I
intend to undertake. My academic ability alongside the skills I have attainted will generously
aid me in becoming a worthy Historian.
