Q1.

Consider a charge q placed at a distance d from the centre of a conducting sphere of radius
R (d < R). Determine the potential inside the sphere using the Greens function technique.
(7 marks)

Q2.

A spherical shell of radius R is rotated with a uniform angular velocity about z-axis. The
shell has a uniform surface charge density . Determine the current density. Using the
current density, determine the vector potential inside the spherical shell.
(7 marks)

Q3.

Consider a current loop of radius R carrying current I. The current loop is in the x-y plane.
Define the current density and show that the area integration of the current density is the
current in the loop. Using the vector potential expressed in terms of current density,
determine the magnetic field at the centre of the loop.

Q4.

A cylinder of radius R and length L, made out of a hard magnetic material, is placed in such
a way that the axis of the cylinder is parallel to the z-axis. The cylinder has uniform
magnetization of magnitude M and the magnetic moment is in the z direction. Show that one
can
determine the magnetic field using the magnetic scalar potential. Then determine the
H - field and B - field. (Note: The magnetic scalar potential has the similar form of electric
scalar potential.)

Q5.

A plane electromagnetic wave, described by its electric field E = E0 sin(k x t) y , is

incident normally on a conductor. (a) Determine the time average Poynting vector. (b) If the
wave is totally reflected, determine the pressure exerted on the surface.

Q6.

A parallel plate capacitor is filled with a linear dielectric material whose permittivity is a
function of space, i.e. = a + b z . The separation between the two plates is d. The upper
plate is maintained at a potential 0 . Determine (a) the potential as a function of z, (b) the
electric field inside the dielectric. (Note: Express both the quantities in terms of 0 .)

Q7.

A) An infinitely extended conducting sheet, which is grounded, is lying in the x-y plane. A
charge q is placed above the sheet and the electric field above the sheet is given by

E(r ) = 2qd(r 2 + d 2 )3 2 z . Determine the induced charge due to the presence of charge q
above the conducting sheet using the given electric field.
(4 marks)
B) A charge q is placed inside a dielectric medium of permittivity . Because of the
presence of charge, the medium is polarized and the polarization is given by

q " 1 %
P=

C) Consider the gauge transformation of the scalar and vector potential as follows:

1 (r, t)
(r, t) "(r, t) = (r, t) +
c t

A(r, t) A"(r, t) = A(r, t) (r, t)

mentioned gauge transformation.
