EXPERIMENT 1: CALIBRATION OF 900 V-NOTCH

Aim:
To find the coefficient of discharge (Cd) through a 900 triangular notch (V-notch) and
calibrate the notch.
Theory:
A notch may be defined as a sharp-edged obstruction over which flow of liquids occurs. The
sheet of water discharged by a notch is called Nappe or vein. Notches are used for
measuring the flow of water from reservoirs and are generally rectangular, trapezoidal or
triangular in shape.
Apparatus:
1) Open channel stream provided with baffle plates
2) 900 triangular notch (V-notch)
3) Constant Water Supply, with regulating valve to change discharge value
4) Collecting tank with piezometer to obtain actual discharge
5) Stopwatch
6) Hook gauge to measure water level head
Procedure:
1) Check the channel or tank for any leakage.
2) The dimensions of the collecting tank are recorded.
3) The V-notch is installed at the end of the channel and the water supply is switched
on.
4) As water flows in the channel, measure the water head using the hook gauge once
the water level has stabilised. Adjust the hook gauge to zero.
5) Adjust the flow control valve to give the maximum possible discharge without
holding the notch.
6) Note the final hook gauge reading H at constant steady flow. This gives the head
over the notch.
7) The water is collected in the collecting tank of known dimensions and the time t in
seconds for the water to rise R metres is recorded.
8) Steady conditions are allowed before the head and rise of water level are recorded.
Lower the water level in the approach channel in stages by adjusting the flow
control valve and record the series of readings H, R and t at each stage.
9) Steps (6), (7) and (8) are repeated until 3 sets of readings are obtained. All the
readings are tabulated.
10)The average coefficient of discharge Cd is calculated.

Note:
1) The centrifugal pump has to be operated at maximum speed for getting maximum
discharge.
2) The flow rate to the notch tank is controlled by the delivery valve at the pump.
