IBPS Clerical PrerequisitesSBI Clerical Exam
PatternSBI Clerical Prerequisites It is an
examination with duration of 2.5 hours,
which consists of 250 questions. Different
topic areas of the question paper is stated
below- Name of Tests (Objective) No. Of
Questions Marks Test of ReasoningQuestions 50 Marks 50 Test of English
Language- Questions 50 Marks 50 Test of
Numerical Ability- Questions 50 Marks 50
Test of General Awareness with special
reference to Banking Industry- Questions 50
Marks 50 Test of Computer KnowledgeQuestions 50 Marks 50 Negative Marking
Penalty of negative marking is there in case
of wrong answers if any marked in the
Objective Tests. If a wrong answer has been
given by the candidate for a question, onefourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that
question will be deducted as penalty. Validity
of Score Card The Score Cards will be issued
by IBPS, which will remain valid for one year
from the date of issue of the Score Card.
Candidates appearing in the subsequent
examinations to increase their scores if they
want to: Cut off The candidates will have to
score a minimum pre-decided marks in every
tests, in order to qualify the written
examination and to be considered for
vacancies in the IBPS recognised banks. The
cut-off points will be based on the average
(Average- Standard Deviation for General
category candidates and Average- Standard
Deviation for Reserved Category candidates).

IBPS is an autonomous entity well registered under
Societies Registration Act 1860 and a Public Trust
under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950 has been
authorized by IBA and has received a compulsion
from the 19 Public Sector Banks quoted below to
organise the Common Written Examination. A
Common Written Examination also known as CWE
will be held by the Institute of Banking Personnel
Selection (IBPS) as a pre-requisite for the selection
of personnel for Clerical cadre posts in the Public
Sector Banks, which are stated below: Examination
will be conducted with an interval of 6 months and
the Scores so obtained will remain valid for one
years from the issue of score card. The Common
Examination system for recruitment of for selection
of personnel for Clerical cadre posts in the Public
Sector Banks quoted below has been approved by
each of the 19 participating Public Sector Banks
and the Managing Committee of the Indian
Banks'Association (IBA) with the permission of the
Government of India. 19 Participating public sector
banks are quoted below: Allahabad Bank Indian
Overseas Bank Andhra

The Final selection will be done based on the
performance of candidates in the written test as
well as in an interview, which would be taken
further. Phase-I: Written Examination The written
test of Objective type questions will include the
particulars stated below- General Awareness.
General English. Quantitative Aptitude. Reasoning
Ability. Marketing Aptitude or Computer
Knowledge. Negative marking for the wrong
answers will be there in the Objective tests. 1/4th
marks will be deducted as penalty for every wrong
answer. The Candidates need to pass in each of the
objective tests. Phase-II: Group Discussion &
Interview The candidates need to get passed in the
written examinations and then they will be called
for group discussion and interview, Based upon the
vacancies in each and every category i.e..

60 mins Important Note: The Descriptive Papers of
only those candidates who secure minimum
qualifying marks in every objective tests will be
judged. Negative Marks Penalty is there for the
wrong answers marked in the Objective Test. For
each and every question for which a wrong answer
has been given by the candidate one fourth or
0.25 of the marks will be deducted as penalty to
come at the total corrected score. Cut off A
candidate need to secure atleast minimum
standardized score in every test to qualify for the
written examination and then he or she will
considered for vacancies in the participating banks.
The cut-off criteria will be decided on the basis of
average (Average- Standard Deviation for
General category candidates and Average-
Standard Deviation for Reserved Category

IBPS, is an autonomous entity which is registered
under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and a
Public Trust under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950,
has been administered by the IBA and has
received a mandate from the 19 Public Sector
Banks to organise the Common Written
Examination. Common Written Examination (CWE)
is being organised by the Institute of Banking
Personnel Selection i.e.. IBPS as a pre-requisite for
selection of personnel for Probationary Officer or
Management Trainee posts in the Public Sector
Bank. The following examination is organised with
an interval of 6 months and Scores obtained in this
examination remains valid for one year from the
date of issue of score card. The system of Common
Examination for recruitment of Probationary
Officersor Management Trainees has been
approved by each of the 19 participating Public

Sector Banks and the Managing Committee of the
Indian Banks'Association (IBA) with the will of the

Recruitment Process Deserving students who want
to join any of the above Public Sector Banks as a
Probationary Officer or Management Trainee will
need be required to take the CWE exam. After the
completion of examination, candidates are issued
their mark sheets, which remains valid for one
year. Every participating Public Sector Bank will
issue their own separate recruitment notification,
properly mentioning their vacancies as well as
quoting the eligibility criteria in terms of- age
educational qualification- experience (if any)
minimum required level of IBPS score in each
component test plus Total Weighted Score etc.
Candidates who have cleared the CWE have been
issued scorecards and who meet the quoted
eligibility criteria are then need to apply to any of
the participating banks they wish to write their
personal details and their CWE scores. Every bank
will shortlist candidates and further carry out own
selection process like Group Discussions and/or

Question paper for each post will include 5
sections, question paper will be of 2.5 hours of
time duration. Only in case of specialist cadre the

A Common Written Examination (CWE) will be
organised by the Institute of Banking Personnel

Indian banking system is around a century old, as

various type of banks, such as State banks of India

and its 5 associates (Earlier there were 7
associates banks but 2 have been combined with
SBI) Public sector commercial banks, Regional
rural banks and private sector banks. Earlier these
public sector commercial banks used recruit there
clerical and official cadre by their own recruitment
examination. But since 2011, IBPS is organising
examination for recruitment of Bank-PO and bank
clerk in 19 commercial banks of India. SBI
organises its own examination for the post.
Currently there are 4 main entrance examination
for the post of bank PO as well as for bank clerks.
IBPS bank clerk examination: It is an examination
organised by IBPS (Institute of banking personnel
selection) for clerical cadre of 19 commercial
banks. But this is just a qualifying examination,
final recruitment is done by individual bank itself
on basis of IBPS marks and interview organised by
them. At present private sector banks have stated
to give consideration in recruitment of their staff.
IBPS-PO Examination: This is a qualifying
examination organised by (IBPS) at the interval of
6 months for PO in banks. Individual banks call
candidates on the basis of marks obtained in this
examination for interview and group discussion.
Examination is organised by IBPS at time interval
of around 6 months, and score of the examination
remains valid for the time period of one years from
the issue date of marksheet. SBI Clerk
Examinations: Examinations are organised by
State bank of India itself for SBI itself and its
associates banks for the recruitment of clerical
cadre. These examinations are then followed by
the interviews. SBI bank PO examination: Like SBI
clerical examination it is organised by that bank of

India itself for SBI itself and its associates banks
for the recruitment of PO cadre. Further, The
examination will be followed by a group discussion
round and an interview for the final selection.
Minimum essential qualification Minimum required
qualification of both bank PO as well as clerical
cadre is graduation degree from a well reputed
university. Age limit The Candidates must have
completed 21 years of age but must not be more
than 30 years of age. Syllabus Reasoning: 50
Questions consisting of 50 Marks English
Language: 50 Questions consisting of 50 Marks
Numerical Ability: 50 Questions consisting of 50
Marks General Awareness: 50 Questions consisting
of 50 Marks Computer Knowledge: 50 Questions
consisting of 50 Marks Question paper All
questions are of objective type i.e.. MCQs.
Negative marking is there of 1/4th in all banking
examinations. All questions will carry 1 mark.

growth as well as greater pay hikes which are

structure in public sector banks are lesser and the
pay hikes tend to be gradual. Growth takes place
in the organization is basically as per the level of
seniority. It shows in spite of good performance,
one cannot always expect a promotion if he or she
does not have the right seniority level in terms of

time. Hence, both the private and public sector
bank jobs have their own advantages and
disadvantages. Hence, a person needs to prioritize
their needs, skills, preferences before choosing the
type of bank he or she wants to work. As a
conclusion, job in public sector bank means almost
a secure job for the entire life. But the job in
private sector bank do not provide you job security
and you may be removed from the job at any time.

A Bank Probationary Officer (PO) is the starting
level managerial position in any bank. In any bank,
all the officers at the level of General Manager,
Chairman and Managing Director, etc are the ones
who have started their careers at the level of this
position only. The promotions for the officers are
given based on their performance. To rise to the
upper level positions, exhibiting the suitable talent
is crucial. The senior level positions consists the
duties like planning, marketing, budgeting,
processing of loan, investment management
decisions etc. The General Banking, administration
work and other duties those are required from
time to time are performed by the officer. A Bank

PO would be expected to perform all sorts of
banking duties until the end of the probationary
period, like accounting, finance, marketing, billing
as well as investment related work. He or she has
to handle the daily customer transactions like
cheque passing, cash management, draft issuance
etc. PO will be answerable to his immediate senior
officer who will then monitor as well as judge the
performance of the PO for a particular time
duration. The bank PO works in other horizons
such as loan department, mortgage and finance
divisions of the bank. The officer handles customer
complaints and address their queries and doubts.
Good communication skills, interpersonal skills and
tactful handling of customers are the key
requirements for a PO. He will be then promoted to
the position of Assistant Manager after his
confirmation in the position. He is ready to work
anywhere in the country as per the service rules of
all the public sector bank. The probationary period
of the PO basically involves working in each
department for a time period of 3 4 months
each. This puts him in command over all the
aspects of the bank he or she is going to work for

Examination will be organised in 2 phases vis.
Phase-1 of written examination and phase-2 of
group discussion and interview. Phase-I: Written
Examination Combined Duration 3 Hrs (Combined
Objective & Descriptive Type Tests). Having Max
marks-250 (combined). The paper will have two
parts one with objective questions and other with
subjective questions. Objective Test The time
duration of objective type questions test will be 2
hours, Max. Marks 200 and will comprise of: Test
of English Language (Grammar, Vocabulary,

Marketing & Computers Test of Data Analysis &
Interpretation Test of Reasoning (High Level)
Descriptive Test The time duration of Descriptive
type test will be 1 hour, Max. Marks-50 and the
test will be of Test of English Language

essay) Descriptive test paper of only those
candidates will be judged who are very high in
percentile ranking in each of all the 4 objective
tests and have scored overall total 40% and above
in case of General category and total 35% and
above in case SC/ST/OBC/PWD category.
Qualifying marks for descriptive test will also be
overall aggregate 40% for General category and
overall total 35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD. The merit
list of written examination. Phase-II: Group
Discussion & Interview Candidates who have
qualified in both the written examinations will be
called further for a group discussion and an

interview depending upon the number of vacancies
in each category, subject to maximum of 3 times

They will also be eligible for DA, HRA & CCA as per
rules in force from time to time. Initial monthly
emoluments of Probationary Officers, including DA,

per the instructions used from time to time viz.
HTC or LFC, Provident Fund or Pension, Medical aid
for self and dependents, leased house. Concession
for Housing or Car or Personal Loans. Eligibility:
Who Can Apply Nationality A candidate must be
either- Citizen of India or Subject of Nepal or
Subject of Bhutan or Tibetan Refugee who came
over to India before 1st January in the year 1962
with the motive of permanently living in India or
Crucial Academic Qualifications Graduation in any
subject from a well reputed College or University.
Age Limit As on 01.05. 2011 Age must not below
21 years and not above 30 years as on 01.05.
2011 i.e.. Candidates must have been born not
earlier than 02.05. 1981 and not later than 01.05.
1990 (both days are inclusive) Relaxation in the
Upper Age Limit to Reserved category candidates3 years for the OBC candidates. 5 years for the SC

Some useful definitions A quantity in the general

sense is a property ascribed to phenomena,
bodies, or substances that can be quantified for, or
assigned to, a particular phenomenon, body, or
substance. Examples are mass and electric charge.
A quantity in the particular sense is a quantifiable
or assignable property ascribed to a particular
phenomenon, body, or substance. Examples are
the mass of the moon and the electric charge of
the proton. A physical quantity is a quantity that
can be used in the mathematical equations of
science and technology. A unit is a particular
physical quantity, defined and adopted by
convention, with which other particular quantities
of the same kind are compared to express their
value. The value of a physical quantity is the
quantitative expression of a particular physical
quantity as the product of a number and a unit,
the number being its numerical value. Thus, the
numerical value of a particular physical quantity
depends on the unit in which it is expressed. For
example, the value of the height hW of the
Washington Monument is hW = 169 m = 555 ft.
Here hW is the physical quantity, its value
expressed in the unit meter, unit symbol m, is
169 m, and its numerical value when expressed in
meters is 169. However, the value of hW expressed
in the unit foot, symbol ft, is 555 ft, and its
numerical value when expressed in feet is 555. SI
base units The SI is founded on seven SI base
